We were all noobs some time ago.
So I bet that all of us have their first try at mapping saved somewhere..
So I just want ya to show your very first playable map.

My first one was an updated version of the example map given in the multi_manager tutorial. I just made some extra rooms with more multi_managers and other bombs. The map seemed super 1337, when I first ran it, so I added some more and posted it in the mapvault.. I deleted it after some time, seeing that it's really sucky.. :)

Download

So c'mon.. Post your first map.. :)

Tycell what are you on about? When I played that level I thought it rocked! It felt cosy inside as well because you could lock yourself in.

My first map doesn't exist anymore.

Depends on what you call a first map though. I've made maps for Red Alert, Tomb Raider, Starcraft... of which I lost all by now. My first Half-Life maps were never compiled, the first one I ever got to play was an L-shaped thingie with a room and a HOM-effect in it. Including non-transparant glass. :)

My first released map is Detention though, and that map seems to play quite well.

Thanks Habboi, but if you had a look through it in hammer you would see what I mean, the entire outside cliff area is one big Func_wall :P

I am tempted to remake a few MP maps, not for CS1.6 or CSS though. Perhaps we should all chip in and make a TWHL multiplayer mod, with weapons like the ban stick and flamer ;D

By 'first map' - I mean 'first playable HL map you made' :)

Oh its playable. It looks good and the gameplay is well layed out its just the R_speeds are a little high because of my general lack of skill when it was made. :P

heh i have it deleted. Don't even remember what it was :/

My first

'Twas going to upload the first version of this too, but it was referencing like 8 wads, and I would have had to retexture it :P Instead, this is the latest version of my first map.

It's really the same map more or less with all the bad brushwork fixed, scale corrected, some simple lights added--original fullbright--, some detail items added, and some removed.

In the original, I had these a drivable APC, these intricate inflatable rafts full of invalid solids, and my walls were super thick because I didn't know how to adjust the grid size lololol!!!

Ill post my first map when I get home.. maybe.. if I have time. I will release it as I first released it to the public: Full-bright, and no VIS. it got like 14 fps anywhere on the map, and it uses like three textures.. I did it with No tutorials, or previous knowlege of mapping.

Hey Hey, I Uploaded my map Here

I posted my first map at TWHL more than a year ago. It was made of two rooms with two pillars in each. There were about six headcrabs and a zombie, plus a Gargantua in there. I must have played that map myself over fifty times. I thought it was just the most clever map ever. The player had to lob grenades over a pushable barrier in order to kill the Gargantua.

I was so proud of it...until I saw what other people were mapping.

I deleted it from the vault a long time ago. But man, those were the days.

It was the best feeling though--getting your first map compiled and running. And getting RAD to compile for the first time was very awesome too (for some reason, the initial compilation setting for Worldcraft set RAD to "off").

And "Escape from Black Mesa" was the first reasonable map I released. I was still figuring out how to use Worldcraft at the time. I completed that map before ever playing HL1.

my first map was quite funny... it was a room textured with aaatrigger and it had like 30 boxes stacked up in pyramid formation... only i set it to pushable not breakable so when u shoot them they wouldnt respawn... but anyway i had player spawns sticking in the walls so we kept killing this kid we know in real life over and over and he would cry that he was stuck in a wall :)

And since I had not played HL1 yet, I thought Gargantua is a minor boss, so I used it liberally in my custom single-player maps.

my first playable map, thats gone now, with my last reinstall, was a sven coop map that wasnt really completed but you could play through half of it

My first map is still posted (I don't know why) But it has 4 rooms and really low hallways. I put a security gaurd in there walking on path corners (which I thought was awsome) and some scientists. It had a suit sitting out next to some weapons in a storage room (a room with metal shelves) and then theres a room full of grunts which you had to kill but that was it. I always thought of it as a full map and awsome. hehe 2 stars prooved me wrong :P

i didn't compile a map until i figured out how to use the clip tool... of course, by "figured out" i mean, i could drag and cut one side... i didn't know you could press it again to go to the other side or again to leave them both..

My post vanished the first time round, so I'll try again... :D

My first (completed, playable) HL map was LavaLab. I have a couple of RMF files which predate LavaLab, but they were never finished - in fact they were my attempts to learn what I could or couldn't do with Hammer while aiming for the concept of glass walkways and a canyon which eventually metamorphosed into the volcanic setting instead. (My first volcanic crater was big enough to lose an aircraft carrier in; the current basis for Lavalab was born out of frustration with the constant leak errors I was getting, and began as a hollowed cube - you can still see it is basically square...)

Pre HLDM I built a couple of DOOM levels, way back, and I'm almost tempted to dig them up from somewhere and rebuild them for HLDM, as an exercise...

If you want to check out my very first map, go here: http://www.twhl.co.za/mapvault_map.php?id=3486

It's not Mappy, but the tut1.rmf included with the map, the one I made while following the ITB tutorials. Good times...hopefully I can make something better.

Heh - my first map was kinda like satchmo's - i was jumping up and down on my seat when i got a gargantua into a .. well not so much a room as a floor.. and no Rad..... those were the days.
