I have recently abandoned a source map I made. I made noobish mistakes that effected the final compile time. Fixing these problems would take hours, so I abandoned it. Other reasons were there too. HAve any of you ever done this, and is it frowned upon? (I kinda feel bad. I didnt want to be someone who just makes maps, without completion)

Similar: I make 50% of a cool map but run out of ideas and stop working on it.

I trash maps all the time. usually I have this great idea for a part of the map but can't think of anything else for it so it ends up being one or 2 rooms before i just delete it.
Its not frowned upon unless you make a big hype over it.

I've never finished a map. Maybe started around 50, some serious, some not.

It happens from time to time, but you shouldnt delete the rmf/vmf file. You never know when part of the map will be useful for another one. For example, my map "dm_ancitizen_two" was originally part of a singleplayer story I quit.
"FloatingLine" was built over my unfinished entry for the glass compo, etc.

Happend to me all the time. Till lately that I finish them by force, it's not that affective for then I finish them at a very slow rate.

Ya, I also had a good idea for a map, but then the rest of it seemed to be dull, and boring. Now, im going to start another one. Might be a Dam with a powerplant........

Yeah but then you'll never finish anything. :( The problem is now it might turn out to be crappy if you and bored, although my map looks quite nice now, after I got bored of it and I got many other ideas in my head. And I still keep thinking of ideas for it.

When you get bored with a map leave it alone for a while and force yourself back to it later. You'll make some progress on it, usually just enough to wrap it up.
I never give up on a map unless I run out of ideas.

I've dropped plenty of maps. most of which from when I started mapping.

here's a perfect example of what I though was my greatest achivement years back http://www.twhl.co.za/mapvault_map.php?id=3658

it came before I knew of Textlights, and was started even before I knew of TWHL. I have quite a few more like it sitting around. dozens of maps infact. leaving maps is just something most mappers end up doing.

I think my HS maps, and the HLDM map im making for muzzles compo will be the first maps I ever release. at least, besides the example map and the build a machine compo map.

happens to me all the time, just like Habboi, get aways into the map, and start thinking it sucks, or running out of ideas, or just lose my want to map at the time, then I forget aobut it

I have only finished one map. You can find it in the map vault here, it is also my first map. I do more coding now. (not coding for hl mods...)

Well then why are you still here?! WTF NOOB!
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-23 13:29:56 UTC Post #159224
yeah... like wc dude said, i have an excellent, amazing, superb idea for like 1 or 2 rooms, then I sit there after and think, "now what" unfortunately my ideas are also completely random, so its quite hard to combine them all into something feasable

Usually its easier to come back to a map after you put it aside to start on a small side project. Or just leave it alone period like I said before .

Yea, I am guilty of this aswell, my maps folder (before it got lost in a format) had around 40 maps in it, about 10 of them were actually nearly done. I always map somthing because I have had a cool idea or because I have seen somthing which I really like the concept of, but then I make that part of the map, I even plan out the rest of it to some extent, but then I just lose interest in it.

As WC dude said, I just put them to one side, but then with me that side gets bigger and bigger and bigger and OMG its own hard drive.

Maybe at this point I should state that discontinuing a map isn't a sin.

i roughly have 15 published in a few years. my maps folder consists of 133 abandoned crap/test/bull maps that have lead up to the maps you know of.

I have about 20-30 crappy maps in my maps folder that are unfinished, or horribly made. I have released 3 maps.. that is 1 out of 10 maps released.. ick. Use older maps for inspiration. Most of the unfinished maps are just illustrating some neat effet or structure, but have no real gameplay or variation. I never force myself to finish something, because odds are if I dont want to work on it, people wont want to play it..

i have about 100 - but they include example maps, and maps I made to test something. whoa... i had NO idea i had that many!
Posted 18 years ago2006-01-24 02:48:18 UTC Post #159315
I've never finished a map.
Ya, me neither. I have loads of unfinished stuff, and loads more of example/test maps. Somebody asked me recenlty after all this time, why have I never completed a map.

I didn't know what to say then, and still don't now. All I could say was:

"That's an excellent question I don't have an answer for." :P

I've still got 3 sp-2 dm maps that are waiting to be complete. :glad: I just put them all in a folder , all of them waiting in a little corner.

I've abandoned a lot of maps. Perhaps 20% of what I seriously started finally got done, perhaps even less than that.

Luckily, that what I did produce is (more or less) good stuff, and what I haven't produced has learned me a lot and is still a source of inspiration to this day. I haven't been happy with abandoning so much work in the past, but now that I look back on it, I don't think it's so bad. I've had fun creating that stuff, too, so it wasn't wasted time... :)
