You're not the worst mapper ever, you're just willing to display work that you're not happy with. Eveyone has a few skid marks on their underwear once in a while, you just shouldn't let anyone see them! Make sure you are happy with the map, then ask a friend to check it out, then fix it, then repeat the process. Or you could map for Ricochet, it's dead easy!

He says it because of some of our criticism about nuclear 2, but we've apologised to him, and he's calmed down. Shame other people don't do that to me hint hint kol hint hint...

Map lots, and then you'll be good. Seriously, it works.

Post helpful mapping tips here. I wasn't being sarcastic when I said helpful! No spam!

MoP,
Your maps might be "as you say" crap....
But I am guessing that there are Crappier Mappers out there.
HooRay for a little humility.
Shame it isn't catching

I can code. make prefabs and I know loads of cool little tricks and effects in mapping. But my level design is not great.

So practise. Just make lots of maps and pay attention to detail. Things like inset bits for doors.

I dont see how his hair looks like mud, nor how it looks like he is rolling. Thats actually a national flag I made for a website called www.nationstates.net. Its a website where you start a nation and run it. I got bored with it after a few days but kept my national flag. Dont bother mssing around with nation states though. Its a real bore.

Just to divert back to the topic for a moment, try mapping real life things. I think ur skilled enough to make em look really accurate and its quite fun. My map 'Castle' is based on a real life castle.

We all start off as useless mappers. But eventually, you just get the jist somehow. It takes practice, trial, and experience. (Yea right look at me saying all this confident crap). Anyway, I remember the first map I ever made, It wasnt great, but it was in a way. It had this cool bridge thing through a big corridor, and alien slaves used to cool-ily fire at you and stuff.... Yea. (Infact, I think I have an Idea now!) :D
Posted 20 years ago2004-02-22 17:03:51 UTC Post #16956
Um, I've been mappin' for quite a long time actually! Well long before I joined this site. I was a member of VERC for ages before I learned of this site. I used to map for Quake3 and RTCW but I wasn't that great really, but I could bust out some mean corridors and rooms, just not good overall design. I use QuArK for Quake3 and other things. Then I moved on to Half-Life mapping when I got WC3 off a magazine disk. I could'nt even create a solid object. Then I read some tutorials and started. Most of maps back in those days were absoloute crap!
If I could really be bothered to, I could easily churn out some maps that own you all. But I don't have the
1. Time
2. The patience and
3. I normally screw it up at some point!

I am working on a minimod thingy at the moment, the maps in that are good, a few labs, some offices and maybe a Xen level. And some of the maps are so detailed! Right down to the last little pipe ring. I will do some stuff for HL2 when it is finally released! Also, I will resume Black-Death soon as well. Some wonderful MoP Mappage on it's way! BD includes some nice work by Vassy as well!

I am certainly not the "crappest" mapper. But I'm not great either!
m0p m0pIllogical.

Want a copy of my cs_control for an example of a bad map?

You may well have mapped for that long, I started mapping about a year after hl was first released. I went from the old Wc 2.4, to Wc 3.4, right up to today's Valve Hammer Editor. The problem I seem to face quite alot is the kind of dedication you need to be a mapper. Sometimes I get 'mapper's block' where no matter what I do I always get frustrated with it and try to start something new. The best maps I have made were the ones where I actually made myself believe that the map would turn out ok. When I dont do that the map always fails miserably.... :
