What is/are your sources of inspiration for your maps/mods/other creations?

My main source would probably be good music and stuff I see, like photos or films. :)

I get my inspiration from films (star trek for example), or other maps from other games (Tomb Raider etc)
Some of my maps are just adaptations of an existing place, and others are absolutely made up. To be honest, I dont know where the inspiration came for Floating Point, Floating Line or Floating Surface.
Sometimes a map can be born from a simple idea. Hexagons >> Hexagerate
As for my HL2DM maps, they are mostly inspired by HL2 itself... duh

Hmm, probably most definately sci-fi films, such as Alien.

And before you tell me off you ravaging the English language Alex, yes I realise my linguistical ravage-ness. ;D

I make a room...I add stuff to it and then the next day I like it so I finish it.

My inspiration is dramatic things that give you that "mpf" feeling in your stomach. Like an explosion in a movie, an amazing view like a movie panning down a huge cliff or something, or music that makes you "feel". It's hard to re-create moments like these in HL1, so I try my best. The feeling I'm talking about is like when you listen to a piece of music that makes you feel like you can do anything, like you are filled with energy.

Other than that, I get my ideas from things that impressed me, and i try to recreate them.

watch as i casually copy and paste from rimrook's thread.

I steal people's ideas.

<cough> Gyradell Invasion </cough>

Although, the term 'steal' can't really be fairly used here, as Rimrook gave me the permission...

O.k, so i stole it. Big deal.. don't hit me... Mmmm, Rolls.

Wierdly enough, I get ideas from listening to Final Fantasy music. Odd I know, but I have all the FF7 and 8 songs now, and I just let them loop. I can map for hours straight without loosing motivation, or ideas

I take my inspiration from reading books, playing other games, just walking through school or some other casual activity. Music sometimes, too.

What's also interesting I think is how to handle this inspiration. What I found usefull is working out a theme a bit into something workable, and then if I can't use it straight away store it in some form (usually sketches, sometimes some test maps as well) for later use. I've got several themes and idea's around so when I'm done with Mudanchee I'm can simply pick the best one of them and get going again immediatly.
Don't throw away something because you think it's bad - perhaps if you come back at it later you'll see more possibilities to turn it into something good.

I get my inspiration from everywhere. It really could be anything from thin air to a red elephant, and then i map.

I get insperation from films I like, not so much from music... though what I imagine while I listen to music can be good sometimes. Mainly though, I get my ideas from other games. If you look at games from a developers point of view, you can really pick out some awesome ideas from it.

I am always thinking while playing thorugh a game "Hmm... so they did that because it makes this easier, cleaver." or "Now that is a very cleaver way of incorperating grenades." things like that. Currently I am putting together a concept for a set of HL2 SP maps called "Tycell's Dungeon" and when I get my computer back and running (hopefully in 1-2 days) I am going to start work on it.

A lot of the idea is simply aspects from other games, combined in a new and interesting way which makes it original and fun. What was it einstien said? "The best idea's are just old ideas but done in such a way that they seem original."

I mostly play a lot of maps, they give a always a sort of rinkle, but other than that, I really have no inspiration.

Saying that you don't have it won't give you any, either... ;)

Words sometimes are self-forfilling prophecies - you say you can't do something, and that prevents you from even trying.
