When i see textures in the game, they are much more clear, not so pixilated, like the textures i try to make, what the problem? How can the default textures be so clear, but the textures i make are so bad???

First of all, is this for HL1 or HL2?

Well, inGame, the textures that you have on your brushes are smoothed to fit the brush, and to look less pixilated.

Have you tried using your custom textures in game?

They should look less pixilated inGame rather than in Wally.

Also, What program are you using to create your textures?

You need to create the custom texture parameters to a LARGER pixel by pixel (But still divisible by 16). don't use wally to create the textures, use something else. Photoshop is good for Graphic Art Noobs.

Also, realize that wally only supports a certain ammount of colors for each image, so your gradients might destroy the picture. This is probably why you are having so much trouble. You need to decide which colors you want to include intelligently. Don't waste them all on the trim and such.

This doesn't sound like a problem with Wally, it sounds like you just need to improve your texture making abilities. Those are professionals who made the default HL textures, and you don't become a professional overnight.

Not so sure about why you think the originals look "clear", though. Most people (and I) think they look blurry, although this is one way of getting rid of pixilating.

Now that I think about, read what I said about The Limited colors, thats probably the problem.

I've done proffesional work, and Photoshop is considered for the average user, not a proffesional application... Hence all the different tools. To be able to create all the effects of those tools, the exact way that you want them takes a very knowledgable head and a careful hand.

Its a good thing I don't have to learn to spell to be good at Arts...
Even writing has spellcheck!

2tylergig: if you could post a screenshot about what you really mean, it could clarify a lot.

I've had problems with my textures looking messed up because I used somewhat odd dimensions - 64 x 48 or 24 x 32 and such. I'm not really sure what those dimensions were, but they may not all have been powers of two...

Then you may have trouble converting your images to 8-bits, but Wally handles that quite well (unless you use something like Paint for that)...

So, some more information is required here if you want your problem solved.

textures that use odd dimensions get slightly distorted in-game such as:
24, 48, 80, 96, 192 etc. Stick with 'doubling dimensions' eg. 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 etc. try not to use any other dimension for a cleaner texture. And as Capn' P said, wally converts bmp's into 8 bit when you import them, so they will lose a little quality if you made your textures initially in 24 bit or higher.

No offence BL, but photoshop is the industrie's standard. if you dont use it then that doesnt mean the whole world doesnt.

Heck, afaik most graphic designer courses use photoshop as there maintool because its so widly used in the industrie and definately increases your chances on finding a job.

heh, you guys spell Industry as Industrie...

Not sure what the dollar value of that money is Seventh... But everyone here who can afford a computer can afford Photoshop, which is a drastic majority of the population.

Not exactly what I meant to say. What I mean is that Wally converts pretty good - you'll notice a little loss perhaps but that's only normal. Especially Paint is horrible for this, as it simple picks a standard pallette and remaps every color to the closest one in that pallette - with ugly results. Wally creates a pallette that fits the image as good as possible to minimize quality loss.

I would certainly use 24-bit image files as source files - it's much easier to work with than with 8-bit images. Working with 8-bit means you'll have to stick to a certain pallette beforehand, while using 24-bit means you're free with the colors you pick and a fitting pallette can be created in the end.

Ok, to clarify...

The pictures i download and then convert are VERY pixilated, theres no problem with the colors. I'm talking about in wally, not cs 1.6. <-- the pictures are choppy, or pixilated, in wally, kind of like when the TV station blurs out someones face. :roll:

Let me try to explain it in Noobish;

Your pictures have too many colors. Wally only can have a certain ammount of colors, and your picture exedes that ammount. Find images with less colors, and it will be fine.
