Ive been in so many servers since the CSS update (added HDR to de_dust) and all the players have no idea what happened to the map. Everyone complained it was too bright, and it looked different somehow.

Everyone I play with has no idea what their computer stats are, dont know what RAM is, and have no idea what any PC related thing is. I have no idea how they set up CSS. DO all CSS players care about is seeing the enemy PERFECTLY?

I know people in CS1.6 who turn their brightness up all the way just to they can see people in the shadows.............

On another subject, Ive realized that any PC problem someone has, 9 out of 10 times it was a BIOS update problem, Virus, or some problem they did themselves. I never thought so much people were so illiterate of computers. Always thought only old folks were capable of this ignorance.

Same happened with me on sven-coop. Most of the maps on there are 80% crap. So me and this guy were talking a lot. About HL and I said that I could make better shit than any of the maps played on the server today. (They were all crap). And he just goes, OMG that is bullshit This is an awsome map. Not many people can map like this at all. This is better than Valve's mapping (It wasn't).

And yes CS player are stupid. But for some reason on the aussie servers that I go on, they don't seen as dumb as the american servers. I think that those servers just go crazy with all the music and calling everyone a noob if they get killed.

Most professional players do it, in pretty much every competitive game out there. Most professional players also run with 16-bit color, minimum detail, and very low resolution. When it's competitive, you don't really give a shit about graphical quality, just about the gameplay. I've been playing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory competitively for quite a while, and I can't play well with lots of details at all, it's distracting. I play ET at 1024x768, minimum texture quality, 16-bit color, z-buffer, textures, low geometric quality and very high gamma. Believe me, if your only goal is trying to win and not looking at pretty graphics, that's the way to go.

Most of us play computer games for fun. So we do care about graphics and how nice it looks. It's about the whole experience.

Especially us mappers. We really do care about how the map looks. We see things that the average gamers don't even notice (i.e. texture misalignment, overlapping textures, skybox lighting discrepancies).

Yes, but not many of you are competitive gamers. It might be true that alot of serious, competitive gamers are total retards when it actually comes down to computers, but they are dedicated to gaming, not computers themselves.

and yes I do play well, and I would have to agree, alot of CS players are idiots.
But lets not generalise here, a few of us are normal CS fans and enjoy a good game and a laugh..OK so im not the best mapper but im not looking for any trophy's, I enjoy making maps that other people can have fun on and TWHL and all the community (except Jimmi) have been a great wealth of information/help to me..........

I would like to believe I gave a crap about the way a maps looks as a mapper--and I do to an extent--, but 2 things here.

1. If you have time to look at the scenery, you are dead or you team is getting raped.

2. If the gameplay is good, and your being competitive, everything else is secondary.
yes, the general population of counterstrikers ARE stupid.
I've pretty much quit CS because nowadays it seems tough to find a server with maps I like, and where people aren't also blatantly aim/wall/speed hacking.

CS is the most popular mod and because most people find it more fun than pure deathmatch but around the same difficulty to learn how to play, cs being deathmatch with slightly more realism and round-based combat.

Due to it being the most popular it gets more 'idiots' than other mods.
Personally, I gave it up long ago, the mod is feature-bloated and tired.

and full of idiots.

M0p's correct, i also turn my screens gamma wheel all the way up when plaiying dark maps. Low detail in most games for the highest framerates also help, except for Flightsimulator since 30 is enough for that.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-13 08:08:35 UTC Post #173959
I don't like dark maps either - you've got to be able to play at least, plus bright maps feel happier. I'm no competetive player so aestathics matter more to me, but gameplay is pretty important to me as well. Detail has to be sufficient to look good for me, but me too would turn down the settings to get a playable framerate.

I think I've gotten more balanced towards the gameplay side. There was a time I was very keen on visuals, but everything has it's time and place. :)

Counterstrike like Halo do attrract a lot of idiots, im not saying they all are but the majority are.

I also used to work in a games shop called Electronic Boutique (now GAME) and the majority of games buyers know very little about PCs in general. Things such as spec are foreign to many of them, but i used to enjoy helping these people learn how to understand their PCs. After all, we where all learners once!

Plus i would say the majority of owners buy their PCs premade from PC World or Dell and dont understand what they are buying, they just want to play games and wont follow all the lastest trends or improvements!

I never judge anyone for not understanding something, its when you teach it to them and they still dont get it that winds me up! :D

HL2 DM:

Ya I noticed HL2 DM is mostly all custom maps.

CS Idiots:

Its so funny, I was explaining to a player how to turn HDR off, I said go to options, video, advanced, enable HDR. He replied: Whats HDR, and where is options? !!!! :P

I mostly play DOD source now anyway.

Mappers:

Now when I go to older games that I used to play, I see all little things only a mapper would see. Ive noticed that CS xbox has misaligned textures everywhere.

Also, HL2 SP does that, plus has many overlapping brushes. :( But who cares, HL2 is the God of games.

I feel the same way, thats why I shop at the technically-literate GAME. However where GAME staff are at a loss I have to turn to the mighty Dixons.

I bought HL2 and CS:S at the same time, but I didn't play CS:S for more than a year because many people (especially HL/HL2 devotees) bad-mouth CS and CS players so much (for example, at TWHL and this thread).

However, I decided to give CS:S a try. After all, I've got nothing to lose. I bought it already. To my surprise, I love the game.

I don't play with other players anymore, because the vast majority of them are too immature and sore losers. But I still enjoy rounds with bots. They never cheat, and they're team players. They don't pull immature stunts or annoy other players.

To me, not playing CS at all because other players are immature doesn't make sense. I still enjoy the game, and I play for fun.

If you look around, you can find plenty of very well made CS:Source custom maps. These mappers spend six month to a year on a single map. So the result is usually quite impressive.

I don't bother with the typical fy_ or aim_ maps. Those are designed for idiots with short attention spans.

The only reason CS has idiots is because it's popular. As games attract more people, you're bound to get idiots. Though, in my opinion, I think CS is one of the best communities (well, kind of). Sure, it's almost all idiots, but you can find one friendly person in a server and people actually talk. If you play any other online first person shooter, the chat channel is like dead.

Yeah, that's my dream--to play with my friends over a LAN game.

Unfortunately, very few of my adult friends play any computer games at all. They just don't understand why a respectable professional like me still play video games.

When my peers were playing games, I was studying hard. I missed the boat. Now I am making up for it.

CS players are idiots
Not true, I am a CS player. A lot of the population of CSS at the moment are very young, like kids who got HL2 for christmass or for their birthday when it came out because it was the latest top game.

If you find a decent server / clan you will see that a lot of CS players arnt idiots, they are competative but they still have fun.

I am one of the people who turned my brightness right up in the old CS versions so that I could see in the shadows (originally so that I could see in the militia tunnels when the lights were turned out and flashlights were disabled). Why did I do it? Becuase I care about winning that much? No, because other people do it and in turn you have to do it in order to compete.

Look at it like this; if your in a boxing match and the ref says you can put on a saftey helmet and your opponent does so, you would not be able to compete as effectivly if you didnt. Thus when you lost you would get annoyed and you wouldnt have as mutch fun. Counter-Strike is an amazing game with excellent gameplay, and thats why people compete on it so much. Because its fun to compete against other players to see who is the best and if you have a disadvantage (like having your brightness down) then it isnt as fun for you because you feel like you have been cheated.

I myself play CSS on the low graphics setting (not on low resolution though, that is a bit extreme) not because it improves my reactions (which it does, and is a handy bonus) but because I dont play games for the flashy graphics, and usually in CS you are concentrating so much on killing the other guy that you dont even notice all the graphics anyway. When I am rushing around in the levels jumping around corners and trying to get a flash bang away as fast as possible, I dont really notice or care about the HDR lighting that makes it that little bit "more realistic". Personally I think HDR lighting sucks, why the fuck do I want an iris effect in a game? Its ment to be a game, not real life. Also, as I said, its not the graphics that make the game, its the game itself.
Posted 18 years ago2006-04-13 19:20:42 UTC Post #174123
Ohh, I finally understand why HDR does! lol (not kidding)
Hehe...this is pasted from the CS Steam forum.

P.S. Yeah, I go to that forum too, even though the discussion can be quite immature sometimes.
