how do you get your stats up on screen like: FPS, and so on?

Uh.. You mean, that you want to see your FPS?
Type r_speeds 1 in the console.

showfps, I imagine. +showfps is for holding-down mode.

Binding +showbudget to a key to bring up the nice budget panel is a handy thing, too... tells much more than just the fps.

As a matter of fact, frames per second drop a little when the +showbudget graphs are enabled.

It all depends on whether the original poster is talking about HL1 or HL2.
