It wouldn't be too difficult to adapt THIS area. The full map is unreleased so nobody could complain.

Very true...Well I used to have 2MB and it loaded fine...Now I have 10MB and it runs great...

How exactly will you determine if those two rules have been breached? In a way it says that your area must be limited, but it also says it is unlimited. Are you looking for an area with the same theme? Or maybe an area in which every part of it can be seen from any spot?

Lets take this map for example. I think it's ok now because you can't exit from that room but if you'll add an area behind the door it will be more then one area. Simple as that. The room can be as big as you want and with any shape you want but don't let the player leave it.

Been 15 days now and only a couple possibilities for a map have been posted thus far. Anyone have anything new to post?
Guess not since nobody posted, and did you start this compo?
In my opinion, it doesnt sound fun as much as the twhl compos.
But good luck anyway, there will be plenty of entries if you posted this compo to any other mapping forums.

I don't think the concept of fun alters as time goes on. "Destructification" is a fun compo, and we're getting very nice entries, some of them with outstanding entity work.
This competition is as vague as the "Combine Transport Hub" I proposed, so a lot of people will stay away from it if they lack imagination or time.
I'm doing very good progress with my entry, but it takes 3 hours to do a full compile, saldy. I don't want to think of what will happen when I change the lightmap grid! :aghast:

Ok, I get what you mean. But I've been mapping for more than 5 years and I still think the competitions here are fun. This one seems more challenging and yet, I find it much easier than for example the "Test Lab" competition we had a while ago.

Don't worry about the compiling. I can run Hammer 3.5 while using the Source Batch Compiler. No time is lost.

Meh, i'd enter something but i'm way too busy expanding on other things that have caught my attention first. Sorry.

You must rather excited about this, Orpheus. You have a post nearly every other post. Don't mind me asking, but is this competition hosted by you? or is it something you can enter?

Pressuring people to map is never a good thing.
As a profession you are forced to map because you have deadlines and a paycheck to get. I've read a dozen of interviews with level designers (not just casual mappers) and they all agree that it is not something to underestimate.

Might i iterate that you should enter, Orpheus. (but do it for TWHL, we will love you)

Well sorry that i don't have connections like you would. But your point is irrelavent because pressure is the downfall to anything if you think about it. Yet it will always be there. Those in the profession probably love to do it, and those who just want to do it get snuffed out. The big shock is going from single mapper to map with a department of artists and engineers, then seeing your work be finished by hands that are not your own. Mapping does take time and energy, especially today, whether you're mapping for low specs or not. Also, teamwork is a skill best had.

That aside, why the hell do you think i'm lying? I own books about level and game design theory. I'm in college for the art of it! Did you really think that you are the only knowledgable person around. (in which you would modestly say you aren't anyway) There are tons of resources (published and net based) for the field of level design. It's becoming an old subject and the knowledge of it is out there.

Yeah, I'm gonna post some screens of my map in a while too, it's for HL1 'cause nobody pressures you to use props in HL1 and I prefer brushwork to begin with.

@Hugh: my map has only two props so far, and It's bound to stay that way. A tree and a boat :D The rest is brushwork.
