The screenshot has been released and it's unbelivable. It makes crysis look like crap.

That is seriously old.

I don't know if this is a joke or not.
If not, it is quite old, and fake. :)

It's an uber shitty fake. Dispite the power of today's high-end computers, u CAN NOT get photo realistic graphics in real time. Anyone can tell to look at that, that it's a photo some dumbass took of him holding a crowbar like in HL2 and Photoshopped in Half-Life 3. U fail at the internet JesteR!!!!!

I saw that a loooooooooooong time ago, except it didn't have HALF-LIFE 3 at the top, I don't think.
notice the lack of gloves
And it kind of looks like a kids hand too.

Chill guys, of course it's fake. Don't you think Valve would have announced it otherwise? :P

Yeah, I remember someone posting that on the Sven forums last year.

Ha, comes up second when you search for "Half-Life 3" on google. It looks more like a concept drawing.

But how about this one???

But it's ultra realistic, so there aren't any!

Edit: On second thought, I don't think there are any crosshairs with the crowbar normally.

And thus ends the great saga of Half-Life, everything that comes after Half-Life 2 will be destined for obscurity, never to be remembered by future generations. I had such hope for it.
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-15 07:17:03 UTC Post #180159
well.. i suppose when they make a new engine, it might be titled HL3...
But as long as they use Source, it'll be HL: Episodes

I'm pretty sure they're making a HL3. From what I remember, it'll probably use a heavily modified Source engine. I doubt Valve would be keen to develop a new engine yet again (considering that Goldsource was just the Quake engine, the leap from that to Source was pretty large).

of course i know it cg.

Oh god, thy're not continuing on to HL3? But they HAVE to make up for that shitty ending in HL2!!! I was so dissapointed! i want my money back. So i guess we'll never find out who Gman is or any of that.

well about Gman, i've seen some theories that Gman is Gordon's son, but only based on some minor similarities, and not much evidence to back that up. Honestly, that concept alone would make HL3 totally worth it to the fan base.

To pull a hugely awsome twist on the saga, HL3 should be more about the Vortigaunts and Gman. but who would be the bad guys? Think, valve! Think!

I liked the ending of HL2, it set up subsequent sequels. The episodic content will continue the saga of HL2 after the ending and will also reveal stuff about Gman. Patience. ;)

I think the HL2 ending is like a giant cliche, and that explosion looks like utter-shit. But still it was a decent enough set-up for Episode 1.

and can people stop calling it 'goldsource' its driving me insane, its the 'half life one engine', always has and always will be
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-15 08:47:54 UTC Post #180174
Yeah. I had never heard about "goldsource" until I saw it in a twhl thread some months ago.
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-15 08:52:50 UTC Post #180175
goldsource threw me off too.

Lets rename it the "Crete Engine" for its stocky, rigid, and somewhat harsh, yet flexible and workable, and sturdy lets not forget about that.

There will be a sequel for a few easy reasons.

1 - Characters, story, and setting can easily be plotted out.
2 - Fan base will buy into it.
3 - New Technology of any sort will please third party developers.
4 - Above all else, Money.

I hadn't heard of GoldSource either until i saw it in Ant's earlier post.... I used my clever skills, understanding the context to discover what it meant.. Took me all of 3 secs to figure that one out.

Cool name

How was it called goldsource before source or another game existed to make it 'gold', its just a silly phrase coined on twhl by mappers that should move on.org

thats interesting, Ive still never heard it mentioned anywhere before but I didn't realise Valve planned hl2 so far in advance, calling your first engine 'gold' just seems silly

I don't think the first one looks that great. The second one looks like it could be done in the FarCry engine, But the third is pretty amazing. What game is that?

Ummm......Srry, it says it. And it is called CryENGINE. Which powers Far Cry, From the makers of Crytek. And who gives two shits whether it is goldsource or Hl one engine?

Goldsource sounds more like it belongs to HL1 Source, or HL1DM Source. Rather than HL1. Oh well, same shit different name :P
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-15 22:25:12 UTC Post #180336
dsutbunny, the CryEngine powered Farcry.

Crysis is a new game by Crytec, new engine, best to date apperently.

notice how they have Cry in everyname they think up.

Could this be the downfall of HL mapping? Probably not :glad:
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-15 23:21:37 UTC Post #180342
Nah, it would be so hard to map something like that anyway, even if the engine supported it.
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-15 23:24:17 UTC Post #180344
Let's hope there's some innovation in terms of gameplay, otherwise its just gonna be the same crap with ultra pretty graphics.

I really was disappointed in HL2 TBH... Especialmente the multiplayer. I hate how you start out with the grav-gun, and the gravity items just slow everything down and get in the way when I'm trying to walk. Sure, some grav items are nice sometimes, but do they have to be EVERYWHERE, and do I have to get stuck on all of them?

I also hate mapping for HL2... It's so prop-based these days that unless you want to make a transit station or a combine forcefield, your maps just won't live up to the Valve standard. also because of the proprietary textures. I only map for HL2 because to map for HL1 would be like making parts for a steam-powered car.

There's always something you can do about it. Learn to make materials.
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-16 02:05:53 UTC Post #180356
Steam-powered. How ironic.

Anyway, I think HL2DM is actually just a mod some guy made, and Valve started shipping it with HL2 because they were too lazy to make their own multiplayer component. So I guess you can take some of the blame off Valve for your problems with it.

@Nickelplate: That's why you have to learn how to develop additional content (ie props, textures) these days :[ - A level designer position nowadays is more of an 'environment artist', working with all of the elements.
