just wondering how I would go about opening an existing map ( like c1a0) in worldcraft?

This is a process known as decompiling and is generally frowned upon in the mapping community. I'm gonna assume you're only going to do it to learn about something though, so Google for Winbspc.

Also, if you're still using Worldcraft, I suggest you also Google for Hammer, which is the new version.

You didn't mention that it's next to impossible to use a decompiled map for anything other than learning from. You certainly can't just open it up, make a few changes, then recompile it.
