Good! Props are the devil. I say that as a non-Source mapper as Ant so kindly points out. If it wasn't for the golly gosh-darned physics, I'd view them entirely as prefabs... damn you, physics.

Whoops... I apologize. Here, have a cupcake.

Misunderstanding seem to easy to commit. I still think it was deliberate. Even taking into account some English translational errors, it looks deliberate.
Now that's really unnecessary to be so dramatic. :quizzical:

I was victim to a huge misunderstanding that lead people to hate my ego a while back, so i respect the fact that i misunderstood you because its terrible to have happen to someone. But since then, i proofread my posts carefully so that it is easy to understand even for those who aren't native to the english language.

That tiny hint of consideration can go a long way, and it has for me. You often see quotes used to specify opinions better. That's why they are there.

What threw me off was that you followed that emote with the paragraph about knowing professionals. With no previous context in order, i believed that you were commenting and counterpointing. The little sidenote at the end didn't help either.

You really do seem knowledgable of the field. (on topic) i think you should enter the competition even though people say not to. Do things for your own reasons, if you choose not to, it should be for your own reason.

Yeah, it's not like you're the sole judge or anything so there's no reason not to (unless you don't want to).
Posted 17 years ago2006-05-15 16:18:53 UTC Post #180302
reminds me of the HLDM compo. i got like 7 PM's saying not to enter. I entered anyway and hands-down, i won first place. (my only first place currently) I'm glad i did. Made me feel good about mapping all over again, so i thought to start a larger project and begin work on my mod. As a result of that, i learned to model and all the fun stuff.

Not entering the compo doesn't make you a loser. Even though failure can heed better results than completion.

From the rules
The entries may be split into categories if several entries are received for different engines, but this depends on the number of entries received more than anything. In other words, do not be discouraged from making an older engines map if the predominant entries are of a newer type. Your creation is just as important as anyone else's.

woo, in-editor shot. Probably could have used a better angle but I'm too lazy to get two shots atm.

What do you get by winning this? I would enter for source...whens the next TWHL compo? If this compo runs into TWHL's next one (and its source) I wont be able to finish the snark one

Thats a prize? what a messed up place snarkpit is.

Orpheus, about all your misunderstandings, I have thought about it, and have come to the conclussion that its just because your used to snarkpit.

here at TWHL, we catter to noobs. We have some real talent in mapping, but this site was made for people entering the field. that means alot of people with language disfunctions end up here. snarkpit has alot less of that because of the competence that site averages. Snarkpit is alot stricter. alot. TWHL is layed back, we have some of the kindest, lax-ist mods I have ever seen on any site. and yet this site has no trouble.

let me give you an example.
* Discussion of illegally pirated software and warez of any sort on the forum is terms for immediate suspension of your account. Piracy does not belong in this forum, nor do we condone such activities.
The MODS said that that isn't really a rule. I remember Ant or 7th talking about how its really just to prevent people from signing up to ask for a free copy of HL2.

And yet we have no problems. people like you come from snarkpit, err...whiped. Here if anything is misunderstood its mentioned and forgoten.

You guys also come here, normally, with someone of a condecending tone. which you really don't have but its something that leads to 'misunderstandings'. maybe one misunderstanding that you've had from the start is that the majority of the people on this site are just moderate mappers. thats accually an overstatement according to our mapvault. but how many names do you see on the maps there. only a couple of the regulars, current and old, have maps there. take Hugh, look at that screen, he's a talented Half-life mapper. he just has no maps in the vault. neither do I.

I have yet to find anybody to eclipse my Half-life one entity work. Im confindent there is quite a few people out there on the VERC, snarkpit, interlopers, anywhere really, that are better then me but just don't post any of that talent for the world to see their skill.

So um... I guess I mean to say not to take this site at face value and chill out.

not to sound superior or anything.

Well, I guess you've now had an official TWHL hazing or something.

Anyway, im going to go continue work on the greatest boss battle you will ever see in the half-life engine for re-issues

Aww, shucks! :glad:
he just has no maps in the vault.
Yes I do. :P

And I'm a Snarkpitter + VERC admin (though the latter doesn't mean anything now thanks to their gosh-darned dev wiki). I just try to not get too condescending 'cause if you're condescending and then turn out to be wrong, you're a moron x2. But yes, I agree, TWHL's a very laid-back place. :)

Wow, somebody made Hugh an admin. of something?!

Terrifying :D.

Anyway, well-said, 'Lexy.

I used to be a mod on the VERC mapping forums, unfortunately that was back when I didn't know nearly as much about mapping. Now I get to post news and edit articles (which there aren't any of anymore). HURRAY.

I'd enter, if only I had some ideas!

This is a rule and if you discuss it on the forum you get a nice ban to the face. If you want to talk about illegal stuff go on IRC, I dont give a shit about anything there.

I finished my map. I have to do a final 5 hour compile (I just found a couple of displacement errors) and that's it.
I'll post some screens in the official Snarkpit thread and I will post the map in this vault. It might not be 100% compliant with the rules, but I'm happy with the result anyway.
I will again need file hosting for the 5 MB zip file.

...Anyway, I really would rather not have this thread degrade into a sermon. I do not want to hear it, and I am quite sure that no one else really does either.
If you don't want to start a conflict between the differences of twhl and snarkpit, don't defend and counterpoint and then try to block the subject. Because that will only provoke. Attack isn't the only thing that starts war.

wow. you like to blow things out of proportion a bit...

speaking of which, i might actually be interested in this compo after all. Since after some recent mapping experiments came out with outstanding results, I could throw something together.

Since this is the "2006 Mapping Competition" and all that, do we get a year for a map or is there less time limit.

I might need the year

You don't have the year Rimrook
The deadline for contest entries is June 30th
But try making something anyway, do it for TWHL!
I'm starting planning for the "Combine Transport Hub", a map I've been wanting to make for quite a while. I might use it for the compo too, if the results are satisfactory.

Orpheus.. If you continue, you will make more enemies than friends.. At the moment, your still on my good side.. but please.. this forum is very relaxed. :D So, please..

Now, back to the topic, I decided to join for the HL1 engine.. so far I never made much but a robot. It's not quite complete yet, I still have to finish the back, and top, then make my custom textures.. fun fun!
Here, take a look:

Thats cool Unbreakable. Ever think about modeling? You would probably be good at it if you made that out of brushwork. :)

Yep, I do model Xyos. (I got a model truck in the vault.. check it out.) :D

Today I finished it.. I'll have screen shots soon.. maybe..

Orph, you don't even have to be a guest. just act like you do on snarkpit and your a regular here too.

and as for um, the vearing in this thread, I think most of us just reguard the Snarkpit one as the accuall one.

and on to the topic of this thread in the first place.

Unb, looks great, try putting some of those hanging air handlers on the ceiling.
