Well, it seems like a good idea to me. I like reading through these threads, watching people progress through the creative process of making a map, so i decided to make one too.

The map i am wanting to show here is quite significant in my mapping life, because it is my first venture into source custom materials. (thanks habboi)

It's set in and around Microplay, a LAN centre in Glasgow.. It's a huge project because i am going to have to map at least a square half-mile of Glasgow, and anyone who has been in a busy city will understand how tricky this will prove to be.

Anyways, here's some images of the textures i made for it, in a little test map.

Note Every texture is normal-mapped for 3D effect, which took a lot of getting used to. <3 Photoshop Note

Not bad for your first bumpmaped materials.
They look too clean, which might be the case with the real life place, but as game textures they could use more noise.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 07:47:55 UTC Post #194741
Heh...He's right...They do look clean...Really smooth like...Like he said add noise and in Hammer splash on some decals.

Oh and I'm curious to see how close it looks to the real thing...Could you llike do a real / game shot?

Another concern is...Your chocolate bars which looks great...One looks shiny...Is that because it is made shiny in-game or is the texture shiny due to you taking a picture of it...

Does it look ok? Lighting on a texture and lighting in-game clash with each other.

A third possibility would be applying a "plastify" filter to the textures.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 08:56:06 UTC Post #194751
do those materials have a script that updates them or something? now THAT would be special
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 08:58:21 UTC Post #194752
And would totally ruin the map ;) Especially if someone had an older version and CLASH...You can't join.

Yeah like have a working rank board on a map. Hey I saw my name lol.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 09:02:13 UTC Post #194754
Oh is THAT what would happen? Hmmm.... That could present a problem.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 09:03:29 UTC Post #194756
But it's impossible unless Hunter updated the map everyday :|

I bet SOMEONE could pull it off. None of us probably, but I bet it COULD be possible without re-doing the map constantly. But like a super-awesome programmer monster at valve could. I hear they have those in cages. Thats how they make awesome games. Programmer monsters.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 09:10:32 UTC Post #194758
With the scripting capabilities of the engine I bet its possible, albiet probably only in a sandbox mod like gmod
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 09:14:18 UTC Post #194759
in stand-alone CSS, i am almost certain it wouldnt be possible.

Instead, i have several versions of each scoreboard which will change every few minutes.

Yes it could be possible for a 'custom' mod but he's doing this for CS:S and so he can't change anything.

The only way I see it is he would have to predict the future, make scoreboard textures from now till next year and then make them into textures, hide them and somehow tell the map to display it each day...Does CS:S have a clock? :S

They aren't bad but as people have said, they need some lighting and grime on them :P

Use the dodge and brun tool to add scratches and lumps.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 09:59:21 UTC Post #194764
its strange that some games with the 'dirty' look textures are said to be 'realistic' even though games with boring levels like fear are more accurate :P
although maybe its a good thing, fear is damn boring.

I don't know much about CSS mapping, although if you had some app, that would update the material file, once the rankings change - it should be possible.

Coding for Mani Admin could be the key to updated materials via server-side information...
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 12:24:24 UTC Post #194779
Even so...Hunter would have to make a new texture each time and I doubt he would do that ;D

Your missing the point lol.

There is a way to generate a image using code.

You know when you sign-up for certain forums and they require you to type the same text in an image?

That image is randomnly-generated.

If it's possible in PHP then it must be possible in C++ or whatever.
Posted 18 years ago2006-08-27 13:46:49 UTC Post #194796
Lol, no point debating it, guys. It's not gonna happen.

Well, they do serve the purpose of looking like white boards. I dont see any reason to normal map them, and I dont see any normal map effects on them at all. They look like they were made in paint. Too plain, and no effects age or anything at all. Everything in this world has some effects of age, or scratches, or signs of construction.

Materials like these do not require a normal map on them. Thats why its not noticed. Normal mapping is for indentations in rock, or metal. It shows depth in 2D, but light is applied to it like its 3D. None of your materials need a normal map on them.

They are good for creating a unique theme in the map. Very crisp and clean looking. Maybe apply a specular reflection lightly on the white board with the writing masked to stand out.

Just try to remember not everything needs a normal map........

True, and changed.

You cant see it on the ceiling, the walls, the doors or the light fixtures? :S

Some pre-beta in-game shots of the center itself.

the Front desk

Stations near the desk

High view of the center

High view of the center 2

The back wall & Scoreboard

And here are some real-life shots for you to compare... Erm, its busy, though.

Even if the centre itself has really smooth walls - the wall textures should still have a more noticeable bumpmap (if it's plastic - try something gradient-like).
Something else to break up the emptiness of the walls would be great too. More supports, maybe some horizontal ones in the upper part?

Try rotating the monitors/comps/changing the view on the screen to give it a more realistic, random-ish look.

Looking pretty good but a few things:

1. Add a point_spotlight on the projector.
2. If you haven't then I suggest you do so...Take your pictures on full graphics because if you haven't then you have that annoying ugly effect I see on most map threads...People take pictures and their maps look nasty due to low graphics.

I mean compare a low quality picture of a map to a brilliant map and you can tell why yours looks bad if you get me. Man I hate that effect!

And I see...GMOD!? :(

Habboi, that made almost no sense, but i believe you're talking about anti-aliasing? If so, my HL2 crashes when i try. too graphically intense for a 128mb card.
Archie ArchieGoodbye Moonmen

I do make sense actualy...It's hard to explain but I look at every map thread on Iwannamap and Interlopers and everyday I see good and bad maps...What makes them good from bad?

The way they present them...I see good maps taken with ultra nice graphics and brilliant textures.

Then I see poor maps with nasty pixelation and bad texture choices...

Your map although very close to the real deal has rather 'low' quality textures. I can't find an example right now cause lunch is ready but I'll find one later if I can.

... not really. :

Now that I've seen the pictures of the real place, I see you're doing a good job. But perhaps you could give yourself more freedom and change the place to make it look more interesting. Maybe adding big posters of your favourite LAN games etc.

Ah well that was a nice dinner...Anyway I failed to mention your lighting is not so great...Change those lights to texture lights - Google how to do it.

I can tell you didn't show those pictures for the lighting but even so I have to say it ruins the quality of the pictures...The lighting almost made me cry as much as when I saw a friend of mine make this:

http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/7640/aimsupermarketbeta0004iq5.jpg

(No offence to him)

Anyway I've learnt from the past few days that if something doesn't look good it gets better the next time you work on it...

Are those projector score materials translucent? They should be. A projection is not like a TV on a wall. Its kind of like a ghostly image.

If you dont know how to do it, add this line to the materials .vmt....
"$translucent" "1"

In the materials .vtf file, add an alpha channel. Black is fully visible through, white is not. Maybe adjust the whole material as a light grey. The greyscale is a reference for the translucent command to check on the opacity of the image.

Anyway, it looks good, resembles FEAR a bit. You should have like cheetos bags, or chips lying around. I think there are props from CS militia for that :)

A BAWLS energy drink poster would be funny too :) :)

Good job XD

the projector screens are indeed slightly transparent, and much more simply than what you're thinking of.

render mode: texture
Fx ammount: 180
