This is really rather odd.

I came home from school to find Steam's taskbar icon in the downloading phaze, when I opened Steam, all of these were in my list. Any idea on what's causing this or how to get rid of them?
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-30 15:38:57 UTC Post #195121
They obviously made a a deal with some company and now they are a big advertisement.

Steam is full of money whores...

EDIT: Oh look at that, no games work. The game just randomly closes.

Hm, this is a new low for Valve. I can accept real, full games and mods related to Valve developed games but these shareware arcade games are just... crap. For shame.

Edit: LinKinParkFool25? Hahahahaaha stupidest nickname ever. Not only does Linkin Park suck the cock, but the first 1 through 24 were already taken?

This has not happened for me. Lucky me :)

Yeah, just received word that the popcapsomethingblabla has beein uploaded to steam.

Oh well, this is what they had in mind for steam from the beginning, Half-life was just an experiment.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-30 16:25:33 UTC Post #195125
lol. Just got that 5 minutes ago.

Any way of gettin rid of that junk?

ZL, "linkinparkfool25" is the name of my friend's account, I bought his account from him because he knows nothing about computers and tried to install HL2 in a 3-year-old laptop. If i had made the account, it would be "RotatorSplint" ;)

Until now, i supported steam. They die. now.

I wouldn't care if they uploaded them onto the downloadable files, so people could get them if they really wanted to, but adding 70 demos of games i am NEVER going to play is out of order.

Nooooooooez!!! Now I have all that demo crap mixed in with all the great, and REAL Valve games?!?! I can't stand this shit any longer!

On second thought, somebody may find a way to get rid of them in the near future.

Icky.

You know they're charging 90 bucks for the entire PopCap package, too.

what are you on about popcap games are addicting

and the only reason im against this is that they are on the menu without even installing them.

even though they are not in the way

or taking up any HD space

or slowing steam down

etc.

Good Christ you people sure are whinging bastards. Let me summarise this thread according to you guys:

"OMFG STEAM SOMEHOW INSTALLED SPYWARE AND VIRUSES AND ALSO FORMATTED MY DRIVE BUT WHEN I REINSTALLED WINDOWS STEAM WAS STILL THERE AND IT FORMATTED MY COMPUTER AGAIN"

As opposed to the actual truth, which is:

"There are 10-15 new additions to the games list, ready to be preloaded if the user wishes. It does not affect the operation of Steam, nor does Valve force you to download the games"

Seriously, if you all hate Steam so much, go and use Hamanchi to simulate some LAN games, you fucking pussies.

The problem is that Steam is now cluttered with games, and we can't seperate them from the games we own.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 05:04:56 UTC Post #195161
Why not? I can. Organise them via their status. Voila, problem solved.

Ant has a point there, I was expecting like 30 of these things but I was actually quite suprised when I saw how little there was. But believe me it's still VERY annoying that Valve have contaminated Steam with this poo that passes for games. D:
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 06:44:54 UTC Post #195165
Ant, on the other hand, stop defending Valve for everything anyone remotely questions.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 06:50:36 UTC Post #195166
I'm not doing this on account of defending every single thing Valve does, I'm doing this because people like making a huge fuss over things that are inherently pointless. Everyone seems to love complaining about things that are so miniscule and so benign. Same thing happened when the Da Vinci Code book came out and when the shitty film came out. Hell, I still get pamphlets in the mail from retarded religious nuts who wish to tell me the meaning behind the book.

WHO GIVES A SHIT, IT'S A CRAPPILY WRITTEN FICTIONAL BOOK.

Sure, I complain about certain things sometimes, but I sure as hell don't make it my lifes work to repeatedly find apparent grievences in this unperfect world. This thread, and countless others prove to me that either few people here have a sense to actually sit back and look at an issue critically. Rather, they just spew bucketloads of utter drivel. Hell, could someone please look at this stupid issue in a humourous light? I would praise anyone who does forever, because at least it shows me that some people value more important things in the world.

Jobabob: You are one person in particular I admire for taking the mickey out of stupid issues (your replies in the Religion thread were priceless) but man, seriously: Steam is a game distribution platform. It doesn't rule your life. Valve is a publisher - just because you don't like what they publish doesn't automatically mean that whatever they touch turns to sewerage.

I apologise for what must look like a crazed rant, but it frustrates me that people continually do things like this, particularly with many more pertinent issues in the world today that require our attention.

Sheesh.

Popcap games ftw. They have made some serious addictive games like Bejeweled 2, Heavy Weapon, Chuzzle and of course: Insaniquarium, my favorite. I highly recommend those.

Exactly Ant, bunch of whiners, if Valve wouldnts sell steam to other developers then they would need to charge more, wich offcourse makes people pissed more.
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 07:51:54 UTC Post #195173
Ok, but you have to admit that having a non-installed Opposing Force icon surrounded by "Bookworm Deluxe" and "Dynomite Deluxe" is a bit out of place. I'd much rather have all these offers in a different tab. Not even Microsoft adds icons of the MS Office versions you don't have in the Programs menu...
The Steam menu seemed organized and tidy when it all began. I sadly can't say the same thing now.

You can't really blame people for not liking some of the things going on with Steam. It's not like we have a good alternative since they terminated the WON version. I still use the WON Half-life btw.

I agree with Muzz and Garg, however that does not mean they need to clutter the games menu with games I don't even own. Ant had a good suggestion, which is organizing them by status, but honestly, I should be able to organize them how I want without having a ton of games that I don't have installed getting in the way. :|
m0p m0pIllogical.

The menu's could be a bit better, but does it enhance the gameplay in any way?
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 08:49:37 UTC Post #195181
i dont really mind, but it would be nice to hide demos or something like that, i'm sure as steam gets more and more games and demos, steam will get that kind of option...

i mostly agree with Ant's crazy rant above, except that i have heard that the da vinci code (not having read it myself) is not 'crappily written', but is actually very good, this coming from people who couldn't give a flying fuck about religion. (although the "OMG I R RELIGIOUS AND I R BAN TISH BOOK!" is the worst)
also, nothing valve can do can stop me liking steam. it has a good file system, it provides updates more regularly than patches would, it allows new content to be injected into a game, it ensures all clients are using the same version, and it allows valve to release media more redily and episodic content, it also allows small-time companies like Introversion, Tripwire and Ritual to release software at low cost, universal multi-language support, and ffs, they are selling plush headcrabs!

in summary: STFU and get over it, wow a few extra games in the list, if you dont like it, use the compressed window and collapse the 'not installed' list.

The Da Vinci Code is horribly written and I've read it. This isn't from a religious side, it's from a "what makes a decent novel" side.

I still don't get the idea, of putting freeware games on a HL-oriented game platform.
Sure - it's not the end of the world, but still - it's rather annoying to have your game menu cluttered with games you don't need (organised or not). They could have at least made a separate folder for all of those demos.
Although Zuma is pretty damn addictive, I tells ya.

The point is, if they have already sold their soul to the devil for a bunch of pocket change, who knows what they'll do in the future.

Maybe by next week, there will be 5,238 games listed in the uninstalled section of the Steam menu, so the Game menu will take up 32 screens. You have to scroll 28 times to get to the Hammer screen.

You should be able to remove them, or disable new games poping up...

We all paid for steam and Half-life--some of us twice because our cd keys were raped. Why should we have to keep paying for it through this shamless marketing, from which there is no escape.

It's wrong, period.

Ant, M_garg, and Pepper are evil secret agents fro Valve!!!!

BURN THEM AT STAKE!!! :P

meh, on the other hand Ant I did waste a large part of my life with halflife and its various mods and Steam was a giant blotch on that. Of course it doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things, but I enjoy gaming and when I see that enjoyment being messed with I comment about it.

In reality, in this case anyway, I dont't give a shit other than it took me 3 minutes to start Steam up because of the updates. That I hate!
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 18:52:14 UTC Post #195245
I just got home from school. I saw Steam's task bar in the downloading phaze. Opened it up, and the demos are gone :o

On the note of a new tab... I think it's a fantastic idea, but I dont think Valve would comply. Demos are designed to sell games, and I personally would never look in the demos tab because I hate demos :D and thus the purpose of them would be spent.

Still though... Bejeweled is pretty fun  .
Posted 17 years ago2006-08-31 21:03:14 UTC Post #195247
Actually, Steam had a client update that had nothing to do with those new games.
  • Friends now displays the game you are playing to all your friends
  • Attempting to add a Friend who doesn't have a Steam account will now give you the option to send them an email, inviting them to become one
  • The words 'valve' or 'steam' are no longer available for use in the Friends name
  • Fixed game install dialog over estimating install size for games that shared content
  • Added a "Don't Show me Again" checkbox to the System Requirements dialog for games
  • Fixed FPS drop after running a listen server
Edit: Oh look at that, all the demos are gone from the Games list: happy now?

I think it was clear that no one was going to buy these games, steam hasn't kept them from making lots of money so far. People have always, grudgingly, bougt games from steam anyway.

the games are still available on steam, just all the demos are gone. also, all the games listed as 'not installed' are gone too. you have to go through the steam store to get them. a clever way to get people browsing the store :P
