Doom was the first game that was truely 3d because it was the first game to use height differences.Indeed. Although once you start mapping for it, you generally start thinking of it as 2.5D. It took some extremely tricky ... uh ... tricks to simulate having one level physically above another; it was really more of a 2D layout with, as you say, height differences.
doom was not fully 3d, you couldnt look up or down and no object could be rendered that wasnt attached to the floor or ceiling.Download Doom Legacy. DL lets you jump and aim along the x and y axis.
