is it possible to create a map in 3D studio max, and then finish it in hammer, putting in lights, buy zones, etc?

Almost definitely not, unless someone's written an exporting thingy for Max.

Great thank you. Another question I have is that I'd like to make my CS steam map a scouts only map. and when the player spawns, all they have is a knife and a scout. I'd like to avoid having to pick up scouts so that there is a reduction in spawn kills. is there any tutorials or advice someone can offer?

TY, sorry I'm new and have many questions.

Have a look at this, if not, just fiddle around with the player_equip; it's definitely that.

Kol, got any other Half-Life Plugins for 3D Studio Max 6?? The plugin that comes with the SDK doesn't seem to work with version 6

I can't see the point of designing anything in MAX to be used in hammer, it would surely take a lot longer and create massive amounts of invalid brushwork. Halflife is based on a very simple 3d framework and doesnt even support faces with an angle in both the X and Y direction

Same. Hammer kinda restrains you to at least the probable, if not the possible. I mean, c'mon, HL couldn't even handle the teapot primitive :D

it could - if you use the right tools - that plugin chacks for invalid brushwork - it works, and i did have a teapot on my map once ;) i won't post it for obvious reasons (t3h vis time will destroy me)

yes you created the teapot in halflife without the use of a model, I believe you. Oh wait your talking out of your arse because unless you restrict the model to the most simplistic possible version, the concave surfaces would not be possible.
