You'd almost have to use custom content to achieve anything funny. The default HL2 assets don't make for anything particularly funny unless you pose them weird in Garry's Mod and mess with Gman's face.

Yes, the compo is now for HL1 and HL2, but they'll be judged seperately.
So we have a HL1 winner and a HL2 winner?

This should be done with any future compo's as well... HL1 compo's for HL1 mappers, and a Source counterpart for Source mappers. Right?
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-11 04:17:15 UTC Post #199223
seconded.
aparrently the current twhl coding doesnt allow 2 different comps at the same time, but running the SAME compo should be fine, right? ;)

Yeah, gotta agree on the custom content stuff. If custom stuff for HL is fine, then it should be for Source. C'mon, you've all had long enough to get the hang of such stuff now.

Exactly, if you can't get textures to work then follow my guide in my journal (Page 7) and if it still don't work then PM me.

As for models...Ask Xy ;D

All looks cool to me, but there is just one more elephant in the room that needs to be discussed, and that's judging time.

Results should be posted in a reasonable amount of time.

I totally realize people have their own lives/responsibliities/priorities, but I'm sorry, 3 weeks--I don't remember the exact time, but it sure felt that long--for results is just torture, and is totally unacceptable imo.

What can we do to expedite the process for this one?
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-15 20:51:25 UTC Post #199790
I agree. I'm willing to do my part to get the results out quickly.

Well, clearly you don't. Here's the lowdown for a start:

Competitions don't run through our Admin panel, which means Alex has to hand-code each one. That involves going through the database and other nasty things. At the moment, he's the only one that knows how.

The delay last time was caused by Alex's transistion to University. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked, moving successfully for Uni is far more important than getting the competition results out. Besides, three weeks is nothing, so just be patient.

Christ!--you might consider upping your meds, mon ami. :wtf:

Just because you can't code the results officially in a timely manner, doesn't mean you can't post the results in the compo thread or something. No ones asking for or expecting miracles, just a reasonable freakin' timeframe.

It's not just the "delay last time", but every compo takes too long. It should NEVER take more than a couple days imo to release results.

Even with a lot of entires--12-15--, (which almost never even gets close to that) I don't see how it could take longer for a judge to get through them all in an hour or so. All that leaves would be the both judges to concur--if there are two--, and that should not take more than a day or two.

I'm sorry if you feel offened by my comments, but I think you're dead wrong on this one...
Posted 18 years ago2006-10-27 05:23:46 UTC Post #201031
Well, I can very sincerely assure you that you can't judge fifteen entries in an hour, and I've judged god knows how many of 'em. Not helped by all the hassle of getting the entries, which are often corrupt, in stupid formats, archived badly, and all around the Web since we can only upload 2MB files here via PHP. Then of course the judges need to confer, and what with us having lives and being in different timezones, just finalising the results often takes days.

It's never going to take a couple of days or less. Deal with it.

Fair enough... looking back a couple of days is a bit unreasonable, but I still think it's highly plausible. :P

I suppose a couple of weeks acts as a nice little buffer between compos anyway, which is nice. It's just a bit agonizing waiting... I'll try meditating on grace for a while tomorrow. :)

I like it when people post their compo maps early for all to see. But since I'm judging this one, I won't look at any maps until after the deadline. I don't want to get familiar with any of them until then.

Um, we were done until you opened your mouth ;) And nobody said they were "hording" the results... besides I dun care what your excuse is, 3 weeks is an epic amount of time to judge a compo, and is totally unacceptable, period.
Exactly, it's not like we're holding onto the results and saying "Hehe, let's piss off TWHL today and NOT POST THE RESULTS!!!"
Um, I never said nor implied that, and you know it. I merely said if the difficult part of getting the results out is coding them, then fuck all to the coding, simply post the results in the compo thread when they're ready.

I was done talking about this, but it seems you all are interested in bringing it up again, so let's have a fun exercise examining a typical judging process the way I see it:

Suppose you have 15 entries, which to quote Luke again is an epic amount of entries for a typical compo. (really, I'd be quite interested to see the actual average of entries per)

I've not judged a sanctioned compo, but I've reviewed more than a couple maps to make an educated guess about the process. As for those entries recieved:

4-7 - Will be severely unfinished or just poory concieved/implemented. For these maps you wouldn't need more than a minute or too to write some notes and more importantly disqualify them from the running.

1-3 - Will be missing wads or will be otherwise unplayable. These take no time at all because they're immediately disqualified.

7-10 - Will be decent, thoughtful entries, though many of them mediocre or lacking in a crucial way. 1-2 of these entries will probably very nice and stand out from the rest.

All of this could easily be done in the span of an hour or a little more. At the mose approaching perhaps 2 hours if you recieved an above-average amount of really good entries.
Not helped by all the hassle of getting the entries, which are often corrupt, in stupid formats, archived badly, and all around the Web since we can only upload 2MB files here via PHP.
If the files don't meet the minimum standards to run, they should be disqualified, period.

The longest/hardest part of the process--besides coding maybe--would be agreeing with the other judge... still, I don't see how this could take more than a few days, perhaps a week at most.

I really could give a fuck about all this until Ant took my comments as a personal attack, and started whining in his grandfatherly tone... All I was really trying to do was give my impression.

/holy jesus long rant

Well it seems you had more things to say? :P
Its not that important.3 Weeks is an acceptable time amount in my opinion."I mapped for 1 month for the compo I can wait 3 more weeks and stuff."I could just get busy with real life or map something else.

Are you fucking kidding me?!
To properly review a map, not to mention a whole mod - you have to play it for at least 2-3 times, to get to see every little detail, that might have costed the author some effort. Then, once choosing the trophy-winning entries, you are most likely to look through the custom stuff, the map/mod has to offer (like .wads, sounds, etc.), to get a better view of the ammount of time/effort spent on the entry.

1-2 hours?! Dude, judging 3 entries is one thing, but judging 10 or more entries in a row is fucking hell.. If you want an accurate evaluation - you'll have to check it out again tomorrow, maybe even a few days after.

Fuck it, you're one of the most active reviewers in the MV - you should know stuff like that.. :

I disagree with pretty much your whole post. Most of the time, playing most maps more than once is pretty pointless. Alternatively, in the very rare case that a map is ginormously huge/detailed/amazingly unique, then I could possibly agree with some of what you said; this however is almost never the case with new maps in my experience.

The likely hood of having 10 of these superbly amazing maps in one compo is far beyond likely. A couple, maybe, but most maps you should be able to sum up rather quickly imho.

And you're right, I am one of the more active reviewers in the MV... I've reviewed enough maps to be able to give a plausible opinion, or at least I think so.

Then again, maybe your right Daubster... It should take at least 1-2 months to give the entries a proper going-over... what on earth was I thinking?!

@Urban: Seriously, how long have you been here again? They're both in the tutorials section and have been beaten up more than a few times.

I can maybe understand the Steam Splash Screens, but the wadiclude one by Atom has been in there for ages...

edit: Check that, I forgot how crappy the Tutorial's search function was--you type in wadinclude, and it says nothing found :)

Wadinclude info is in Atom's texture tutorial here.

Dare. :sarcastic:

..

About the time of judgement, you guys shouldn't whine so much, 7th has a busy life, give the monkey some time. Surely you can live a few weeks without the compo results.. if not, then you seriously should consider going to a mapping rehab, if that exists....

About reviewing a map/mod... personally, I don't think it needs more than 1 run, ofc more runs give a better impression, can't deny that, but 1 run is more than enough to decently review a map.

About 10 compo maps in 1 hour... wtf rowleybob?
Your quite the fast one then, when your review for a compo, you should walk true a map quite slowly, observing every little detail..
