I felt like writing something but my imagination is sleeping at the moment so I have written about a section from HL's Office Complex chapter. I might consider writing this from the start of the game to finish which will obviously take a lot of time but I find its the best way to excersise your descriptive abilities without having to run short on imagination which is the main killer of most of my projects.

"As gunfire echoed through the halls and the distant calls from foreign beings chilled the spines of all that heard them, one man was drifting silently between the rooms. He passed many of the dead and dying and despite being of there form he continued his advance, refusing to acknowledge them. He rounded a corner and saw one of the many creatures that was stalking the halls. It winced as he strode forward through the doorway, his tall figure casting a deformed shadow across the walls. The critter sprinted on its tiny legs and vanished into an open vent. The man didn't stop. He headed towards a fire door, the access bar on his side alone, and peered out through the small window. A figure approached from the other side, his weapon dripping with the yellow puss of his unearthly enemy's. The men stared at one another for a second, each of them figuring out the true purpose of the other. The first man figured out everything he needed to know within seconds and he brushed the away the dust that was gathering on his idle form. He turned away from the door and continued walking, leaving the orange suited figure pondering on the opposite side of the door."

Do you recognise this moment?

Give it a go. Write a descriptive paragraph about anything. A section from HL, or any other game or something in a dream. Post it here and see what everyone thinks.

(or not, its up to you.)

"Suddenly, the world came back into focus. He once again heard the same voice whispering his name, the same echo that had been going on for who knows how many hours, days or years...
The sounds of the tram swiftly gliding through space had given way to a screeching sound, the sound of a train reaching its destination. But which one was that? As his eyes adjusted to the light, he saw that his surroundings were now full of colour, and the smell around him spoke of old furniture and carelessness.
It was then that he looked out the train window. Perhaps it was too much information, too many details at once for a mind that had been recently so inactive.
As he acknowledged the architecture around him, he asked himself wether this was the future or the past. This rusty place was not familiar to him at all, but the passengers in his compartiment didn't show any signs of confidence either. They seemed surprised to see him, as if they had seen a ghost. In a way, deep inside him, he did feel like one...
He saw that they wore the same blue clothes he did, and he did not have an explanation for that. As the train finally stopped, the doors opened and the passengers left. Unsure of what has coming up, he slowly set a foot outside. He tried to look around, but a sudden flash of light momentarily blinded him. As he regained his sight, he saw the little one-eyed flying robot responsible for such a harsh greeting. And then he heard the voice, loud and clear: 'Welcome to City 17' "

Night falls once again across the dreary landscape, a haven of steam and filth, spliced with the occasional vivid glow of a neon light. Blue, red, yellow, green, the colours pierce the inky staleness with shocking clarity, each carrying forth their message of corporate greed. Amongst the collection of ventilation openings, figures shuffle along, each wrapped up in their troubled minds, with neither a place to go, nor a place to return. Occasionally, one of the figures pauses to pick up a discarded cigarette butt, looking at it as if it?s a lost treasure. It is quickly pocketed, hidden from view in the dark recesses of their tattered clothing.

This is something I'm writing for a mod.

He pulled himself up onto the platfrom at the top of the ladder, momentarily glacing back at the long slimey dead tounge that hung just beside the ladder. A mix of yellow and red blood trickling down from the wounds he had just infilicted to its body high above. The deafening pounding of somthing un earthly echoed through the metal walls.

Gripping his pistol he quickly resumed his jog onward. Stepping through the only doorway off this platform at the top of the ladder he was greeted with a sight which both excited him and poured fear down his back like a waterfall of sins. A large box with a yellow trim and "Explosive" written on the side of it. He had but a moment to take it in before his attention was called elsewhere.

A man wearing blue cloths, a silver helmet and body armour with "Security" stamped in yellow on the back ran foward. He had his gun drawn and was screaming in anger, dashing foward through a opening onto a raised platorm, pulling his gun up to aim as he skidded to a halt. Clearly violence was to follow shortly, but nothing could have prepared him for what happened next.

A huge black leather bone like claw, twice the size of a man, came flying down into sight. The claw was attached to some sort of tentacle and it even appeared that the connection between the claw and the long snake like body was a head with eyes. The claw peirced the air, whistling as its huge mass came down upon the angered security man's helmet.

The sheer force and mass behind the blow caused unimaginable damage to his body, cracking its way straight through his helmet and slicing his entire body in half, sending a massive spray of blood and bodily fluids splattering all around. The mangled corpse fell in peices to the ground. A peice of ribcage with a bit of lung still attached spun and slid to his feet. He could do nothing but stare in horror as this titanic beast pulled its huge claw from the metal platform where once was stood the man in blue and raised its self back up into the space above.

Frozen in shock the mans heart rate increased as he caught sight of another one of these fearsome creatures, and another next to that. The fearsome hydra seemed to tap the ground around it, as if blind, with its three large heads. Looking for more prey. An ally just before hand had informed him that this creature used its hearing to hunt, not its eyes. His mind began to fall back into focus as his eyes flicked up and locked onto the large rocket engine situated just above the beasts head. This would be a battle to remember.

I'll take a crack at it. This should be obvious which part of the game I'm talking about.
"It's ready! You must go! Now!" yelled the mammoth machine's operator. As quickly as he could, Gordon closed his eyes, braced himself, and dove into the rapidly distorting blob of dark matter. A bright flash of light pierced through his eyelids as he struggled to keep himself together after hearing the deafening sonic boom. A few seconds passed with nothing but the sound of an alien wind flowing through his ears. Then a voice, seemingly coming from within his mind, spoke up, "Comes another..."
Shaken, but pumped with adrenaline, Gordon quickly opened his eyes and shifted his head from side to side, up and down, looking on in awe of the world that he was in. The first thing he noticed was the sky. It seemed the go on forever, devouring everything, pulling it all into a green abyss. The turf was covered with webs and assorted organic fluids. The land itself felt alive, with a pulse and a breathing rate. It was unsupported, floating in large pieces in no particular order. The void below was completely engulfed in a dark green fog. Then he noticed a rather large piece of land floating in the air several hundreds of feet below him. It was big enough to be a small settlement. Branching from it were three massive pillars that emitted large charges of blue electricity. the pillars stood tall and proud, showing off their intimidating power for the entire planet to see. A fairly close piece of turf caught Gordon's eye. It couldn't be more than twenty yards away from him. And another twenty yards from that chunk was another chunk. And another, and another. If he was careful, he could utilize his longjump module to leap to them. He formed a mental path from each piece of land to the next. Ultimately his path led him to the large chunk of turf below.
Gordon crouched down, activated his longjump module, and took a massive leap off the living ground. But he had misjudged the gravitational force on this alien planet, he was going to pass the land! Wild thoughts of fear and anxiety rushed through Gordon's mind. The green abyss below was ready for him, it anticipated his arrival. He looked for anything that he could grab to stop him from passing his goal. A glowing crystal was the only thing he saw, and so as soon as he was within arms length, he reached out and took hold of the crystal. The sudden stop send a horrible pain through his arms, but he had indeed landed safe and sound on his first goal. Thinking more carefully this time, he made a second leap and landed safely on the third piece of land. Shortly after landing, Gordon's focus was disrupted by the sound of a bolt of electricity behind him. He spun around just in time to see a wormhole closing behind him and an alien slave standing at the exist of the portal. He quickly pulled out his shotgun and unloaded two shells on the abomination, sending its body flying into the darkness.

And that's where I'll stop. I was going to write all the way to when he starts fighting Gonarch but I lost interest quickly. Bleh. By the way, nice, Kasperg.

Caculating again, he leaped. This time it was short and he fell into the endless abyss. Within a few seconds, the air around him soon was devoid of oxygen and he suffocated violently, thrashing. No one could help him.

-QUICKLOAD-

"Blast Pit"

"Damnit!" he screamed as he surveyed his surroundings. It was obvious he was in a far and distant place (and forgot to save). There was a gentle hum coming from below. He looked over the edge of one platform after smashing the guard rail off. The whole area was bathed in green light from the mucus-like sludge below. Oxygen tanks and rusty barrels were strewn about, the oxygen canisters making a soft hiss. He walked over to one. The yellow paint was peeling off and strange molds had settled on its rusty surface. He checked the label - BM1971 S/N 0192887251. This area was much older than he has imagined. He felt light headed, but he shrugged it off as the deadly radiation for which the suit offered protection. Then he realized the world around him was a blur. His boots no longer felt solid ground. He had fallen without realizing it. Red rusty handrails, concrete walls, silo numbers and green light all flashed past him. He only had split seconds before he would fall into the slime. Taking action he reached out with his orange gauntlet covered hands. A sharp jerk told him he was saved. Taking each rung down the red ladder swiftly, he knew he had been lucky. When he look back, he expected to see the ladder that saved him staring back at him. But it was gone.

START:

The big door oppened and i ran over to the security desk. The room was huge and there was many computer screens with the same words printed on them to my left. I didnt bother reading them as it was too blury. I continued down the hall to where a man in a white jacket passed. He said:
"Freeman." very bluntly.
rounding another courner a man in a white jacket and a man in a blue suit stood there talking about....who knows.

I put my H.E.V suit on in record time but soon remembered i had to use the toilet. too bad, that suit is hard to get off. In another room a microwave spins some soup and another de-ja-va man in a white jacket sits with coffee in his hand, not drinking it. the other scientist goes back and forth to a soda machine and a notice board. He fails to get the machine to work and beats it everytime. I wonder how much money he has in his pocket. SO i buy him a soda and when he reaches the machine again he STILL beats it. He then turns to the sitting guy and askes:
"someone has hidden my glasses again". even though they are over his eyes....

What predicament had led to this murder. Was this the real life, was it just fantasy. He was caught in a landslide with no escape from reality. He opened his eyes and looked up into the skies to see that he was just a poor boor, he needed no sympathy. Born bipolar he was easy come and easy come, sometimes a little high, then a little low. Either way, it didnt matter to him where the wind blew, it didnt matter to him.

The corpse lay on the floor. He'd put a gun against his head and pulled the trigger.
Now he's dead.
Life had just begun for him but he'd thrown it all away, he pined for his mother but she could only cry. He left on the road, hoping in his heart she could carry on, carry on as if nothing really mattered. But it was too late.

His time had come, the electric chair waited. Shivers ran down his spine, his body ached all the time. He waved goodbye to everbody, he had to go, leave them all and face the truth, but he didnt want to die.

Sometimes

He wished he'd never been born at all..

You guys are a morbid bunch.

The universe is small compared to the journey the Deity had embarked upon. He knew not what to expect from the episodes that lay before him. He remembers his own life as it was before ascension, before nothing would ever matter, and death frightened him where he stood, but nor life would matter. He has seen the deaths of others, the Deity cared of none other but one. Even the bliss of love any thing intelligent enough to hear the word and its silent meaning, to the immortal man, to all gods, all things capable will succumb to its binding power. He closed his eyes, indulged in his memory. He found the her soul, the one who loves him. He remembered how the previous time, he found her and love bound them in an instant, regardless that she had a new insight to her pleasurable desires. The Deity altered his form to fit her realized ways of sapphos and shared with her female eroticism. For one lifetime, they loved. Her body passed on before him, and as she alway, her spirit would emerge and invite him for a chase. He would give her some ages to grow, learn, dispair, as true for himself. He would go forth and seek her company. He broke from his memory and realized this is the everlasting bliss she has chosen for her. She wanted this game to last forever, for eternity. The Deity rethought his recent aeons, decided he was played for a fool. He went forward and located her. They connected as ever before, and he told her of the game they played. They lived blissfully, once again, and has her dying flesh expired her spirit, she approached the Deity and kissed him.

"Your Turn."

The street was barren. The wind howled as fires crackled. Litter was strewn about, paper flying down the street. A blue dot lazily traveled up and down the street without any real guidance to it's movement. It wavered up and down until it snapped onto a oddity. The crack of a rifle sounded, piercing the quiet. The roast chicken like creature went limp and collapsed.
Behind a garbage dumpster, an orange suited man sweated profusely. He knew what was out there to get him. He gripped a grenade, it was his only chance. No he thought, it was too risky. His adventure could end here. He had traveled so far, been forced to kill so many. But it was the only way. He moved out from behind the trash heap and dashed across the warzone. A shot rang out and he felt a sharp pain, he knew he wouldn't make it. It was too far and he had overestimated himself. His staggered forward and collapsed as darkness ate at the corners of his vision.
He woke up. He wondered if he was dead. Touching his weapon and looking around he confirmed the fact that he was still there. The suit has saved him. "Oh my god, it's Freeman!" shouted a random voice. A stiff young man was in an alleyway, seemingly placed there by the heavens. Gordon looked at him and the rebel knew what he had to do. "Good idea doc! Don't forget to reload!" were his last words as he strode up the street. A shot rang out, catching him squarely in the face. He twisted in agony and fell over dead.

<Heh, Half-Life 2 's rebels managed to scrap together exact clean uniforms and maintain their weapons in a warzone while blocking. The only time they weren't useless or annoying was when I had them run out to distract the sniper, and they'd get capped.>

Im going to add to Dave's story:

The Doctor lets a magazine slip from his weapon. He then stuffed his hand in his pocket for a freash one, but this time he knew what happened, - ran out of ammo. he tossed the gun into a bin and reached down on the dead body for its gun. Then he made a quick escape
down a dirt road. the dirt shifted around his feet then the doctor remembered one thing to do durring the night; sleep. The doctor stepped into a nearby dumpster and fell asleep.......
CRASH! something fell on the doctors head. "Head crab! he yellped"
Nope, it was a banana skin. "Yuck!" muttered the doctor and swiftelly moved down the dirt road........

Someone else add to the story now!
Posted 17 years ago2006-12-19 03:03:59 UTC Post #206882
Im not adding, yet this is my own story.. well not MINE per-say. but.. you'll figure it out.

They took all of us.

One by one, they marched us, helpless, into the carriers. We were treated as inferiors despite the fact that all of us knew that wasnt the case. Our intellect is far superior to theirs. Our power of widsom is greater than our power to fight, but that's the reason they took us. They wanted the power to fight. That's the reason for our collective enslavement.

The controllers watched over us from above, keeping tabs on all our actions. Making sure we completed the tasks they screached at us. The warriors, clad in armor would deal with any resistors. Death by "Big Momma" was usually the penalty but occasionally a few hornets to the abdomen would do the trick. And after a few hours of flinching they got back to the assigned task. The crude, yet effective collars kept us "In line." They tried to convince us all that it was "For our own good" but we knew that was not the case. The moment the green metal came in contact with our skin, we all felt our souls die. All hope was lost, and our powers have been transformed, controlled- But far from pacified.

No longer were our abilities used for peaceful purposes. They had war in mind, and the one day the so called "rift" had opened, we knew our time had come.

We fought alongside our masters against the common enemy. The strange creatures clad in white, blue and strange mixtures of green. They all fell to our armies might despite the fact our kind (not our masters) did not fight to the best of our ability. Many lacked the will to fight and just wanted to die. To the masses, death is greater than the imprisonment they are currently facing.
And did death come swiftly to those who wanted it.

There is one creature unlike anyother, that leaves oblivion in his wake. It never seems to die, and when death seems immanent, he comes back with a diferent attack plan, stronger, and more confident than ever before. The different one is not green or white, or even blue. He occasionally seems to be fighting for both sides. He is the one who truely has freedom, the freedom of choice. He destroys our kind, and his kind alike. The orange one, as the survivors heard dubbed "Free Man" spares the blue and white creatures.. Yet tears through the green ones like he was one of us.

What a fitting title "Free Man" Really is.

The rest of us, all the lucky suvivors, who's masters have been slain, all talk about this "Free Man"
He is truely free, and we all wonder "Why can't we be?"

-I bet you know who're P.O.V this is coming from. It was inspired by a mod that im making.. Dont expect to see it anytime soon, its still in dev stages.

I'm guessing the vortigaunts.

However I must inform you that there already has been a mod where you play as a vortigaunt and I do believe it was called "Point of View" (P.O.V.)

Just in case you didn't know. :)

Yes, i actually found that out after the 25 minutes i put into typing that up. My mod is slightly different from POV because its not from the vort's perspective but it gives a little background to how they became slaves, and you (player) are fighting with the vortiguant resistance against the alien grunts, and the humans. Its a cool thing i got going.
