Two problems:
-I need a sound to take a long time to fade in. I mean a long time, like 2 or 3 minutes long. The problem lies in the maxiumum time ambient_generics allow for faing in, most of you should know what it only allows 100 god-knows-what-measurements-of-time-it-uses. Changing the actual wav to be a 2 minute long sound is out of the question. My settings are:
Volume: 10
Dynamic presets: none
Fade in time: 120
fade out time: 50
-"Play everywhere" and "start silent" flags are ticked.
If there's not a way to do this I'm going to be pissed.

-I need an env_fade to go from nothing to its full effect in the same 2 or 3 minutes. The problem is that because the modulate flag is ticked the fade time is all screwy. Not only does it not take the time it should be to fade in(it takes about ten seconds instead of the 2 minutes it should be) but it also doesn't last longer than those 10 seconds. It just cuts off long before it should, but probably because it reached its full effect, "thought" it was done and turned itself off. My settings are:
Duration: 120
Hold Time: 0
Alpha: 255
Color: 128 128 128
-"Modulate" flag is ticked

I'm pretty sure the measurement of time it uses is "old broken hourglass in storeroom of Valve offices".

But seriously, what's keeping you from editing the WAV to make it fade in for 2 minutes?

Massive file size, plus it needs to loop itself for a few more minutes after fading in.

Does it really have to be that massive? you can lower the quality of the sound file (16 bit to 8, stereo to mono, whatever you want), and maintain pretty small file sizes while still having long songs. And if it needs to loop more, just copy that portion of it as many times as you need in the same sound file.

I'm no master with ambient_generics, but from what you've said so far, it sounds like it isn't going to be possible using only the options in entities.

8 and 8, the lowest possible quality, is still a few megs. There's got to be a way around it, there's always a way to get around things like this.

So how about that modulated fade?

What you could do is make 2 versions of the sound: a loooong fade in one, then one at normal volume, and trigger the fade in one first, then the normal one afterward.

...
You do realize that by doing that the result would would actually increase the total file size of the sound by having 2 wavs instead of one, making it even worse than having one long sound.

mmmm, he wasn't thinking of file sizes... but it would work.. that kind of suggestion doesn't deserve a ... and perfect grammar, it was simply an idea that you can choose to follow or ignore. Do as you will, but dont complain at someone for attempting to help.

Most of your post made no sense, Grim. Nobody ever brought up grammar, you left phrases incomplete(supposed to be sefl explanitory? They aren't), and I never complained about my advice. I'm explaining to these people why I can't use their method, it's a lot better and less rude than just saying "no, that won't work, give me another idea". I'm not just going to humor someone and say "ok, sure I'll do that" and abandon the whole point of asking for help.

can you put in ten _generics in, all playing the same file, and play each one a certain time, one after the other, and each one has more volume?

example:

ambient_generic
Volume: 1
Dynamic presets: none
Fade in time: 0
fade out time: 0

ambient_generic
Volume: 2
Dynamic presets: none
Fade in time: 0
fade out time: 0

ambient_generic
Volume: 3
Dynamic presets: none
Fade in time: 0
fade out time: 0

...

ambient_generic
Volume: 10
Dynamic presets: none
Fade in time: 0
fade out time: 0

and loop the last one however many times you want.

To me, the periods and the "You do realise" thing just comes off as bashing him. I know noone brought up grammar, I did. I was not meaning it to be a grammar war, because afterall, its the internet.. I can mess up whatever I wish. Its not for a grade. Your general sentence structure just ran off a crap tone. You could say something like "Nah, that would make two files and I dont want to run the sizes up" rather than saying specifics and proving him wrong. You know what will work and wont for your purposes. They arent making it afterall, therefore they wont care as to why it wont suit your needs. After saying it just wont work, one can just assume that you still need ideas.

Penguinboy nailed it. Thanks, I never thought of that. Ill try the same thing with the fade too. Sounds like it should work but crazy things happen when you're working Valve stuffs.

And Grim, I just like talking :)
