This is probably a ridiculous suggestion, but a tool that generates displacments out of a black and white image, using the shades to determine height? Possible? Stupid? OR GENIUS? O:

Integrating something like that into Twister though, too time consuming or inpossible with whatever code you're using?

That is called a height map Strider. You could compare it with a bump map i geuss.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-02 13:52:11 UTC Post #208299
I don't think so, strider. Too hard for something that has already been done. Dispgen has all those awesome features too!

Yeah, i've seen it around, i was just curious as to whether it could be implemented into Twister, obviously it's not worth it.

Penguinboy: Hurry up and release the final version, i can't be arsed downloading newer trials as they're continually released. =P

Oh theres still alot of time remaining in the beta period :D
That said, the beta is slowly merging into a release.
keep trying to crash!

Also, new version!
with the coolest thing ever, a check for updates feature! (note that the program needs access to the internet to download a text file with 4 characters in it) ...i love it <3

New version!

added curved corner generation.

if you have 0.1g check for updates!

Major Update!!!

Generation for Domes, Circles, and Cones added. Update check now pings to check whether a connection is available, and it runs on a different thread so you can keep using the program while it checks. It also checks at startup.

Also added this and that, minor bugfixes, etc.

check for updates or http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/penguinboy/Twister/Twister.html !

comments appreciated.

Had a little play with it, and the dome generation is fucking awesome. It's getting very handy indeed.

FINAL VERSION NOW KTHNX.

This looks really cool! (I noticed the sexy twisted hallway from your profile.)

I've never used displacements, but I can't wait to start once I begin Source mapping. If you tried to create that without the generator would it be possible to make it look so good, and/or would it take a long time?

Again, really cool! :)
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-08 21:59:59 UTC Post #209063
it would take as long to do it in the editor (perfectly) as it would take to do it with triangles in HL1 ;)

what else should be added in?

It should make pancakes.

But seriously nothing else can be added really otherwise it'll turn from twister to twister + multi-task thingy majig.

oh i want it to do as many things as possible! think of stuff that is either hard or impossible to do with displacements (generatable, of course, no natural stuff) and tell me! i really want to be able to generate as many different things as possible. all sensible ideas are welcome.

...pancakes!?

has anyone crashed the program yet?

these questions are very important for me, as the developer. consider it a map that needs to be consistently tested as tweaked before a final version is released.

I can't open it because of some .Net Framework error :(

you need the .NET framework 2.0 installed.

UPDATE!
now generates inside domes, and there is a new auto-update system as of this version. no more downloading and unpacking ZIP files, it's all automatic!

but of course you wont be able to see the new update feature until theres a new update! and for that i need ideas! please help, k? what else should the program generate?

One small addition would be the creation of the inside of cones since the outside has already been done, although I can't think of any use for such a feature at the moment.

EDIT: The inside of a cone could be used for the ceiling inside a cylindrical tower.
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-21 23:29:06 UTC Post #210165
if you are still using the program, the auto update should pick up the next version.

inside cones added. :D

ideas for extra stuff is still needed.

Dumb questions:

This will work for goldsource?

Have you tried any of the terrain generators out there for HL1, and if so, are they worth trying out?
Posted 17 years ago2007-01-22 04:47:04 UTC Post #210185
haha, its a displacement generator, obviously source only, no displacements in HL1 :P

Try Nem's terrain generator

Here's one more feature you could add. It's basically a combination of the curve and corner (inside and outside). Essentially it would be like segments of a torus.

Who was it that recommended auto-updating and heightmaps? Oh that's right, it was me! ;D

You should post those other heightmap pics, they showed it off better imo. Mmm, this is one damn handy program indeed.

i just wanted that pie pic in there ;)

as requested:
early algorithms - these had the code basically different for each displacement - very long and messy:

new algorithm - more efficient and a nice bit of code that lets me use the same code for each displacement, meaning theres no limit on the number of displacements:

and the GUI (this has changed a little):

Wtf, i thought stuff like that was only possible with C++ or C#!! Your code must be pretty complex for that stuff!
