Opposing Force isn't a mod, it's an expansion pack (technically the same thing, although retail), and it's not free. However, since the advent of Steam, you are now able to get it for free if you own Half-Life. If you didn't buy your copy of Half-Life on Steam, you can download it and register your copy in there, and both the expansions will become available to you.

Ummm... The advent of Steam was like, in 2002 or something. I meant that ever since Steam has been out (or most of the time it's been out), Opposing Force and Blue Shift have been freely available to download for owners of Half-Life.

Uh... get steam, if you don't have it. Through steam, you can get all of Valve's games and stuff, and yes, opposing force for free, if you own half-life.

But how to get Opposing Force for free? I have the original copy of HL and I now have steam. Do I really need to purchase this game anyway?

If you have Half-Life activated, just double click on the icon saying "Opposing force" in the "my games" list.
To activate half-life, go to games -> activate a product on steam.
To activate half-life, go to games -> activate a product on steam.
