Avastis great, and free.

NOD32, Avast, AVG and Kapersky. Try them all. AVG and Avast are free and work well, but NOD32 and Kapersky are both commercial. I'd personally choose NOD32 over the other three.

Yeah, Spybot S&D is a good scanner, but it doesn't offer any real time protection. For that, use AVG.

Real time protection is a performance drag though.

I'm sure we asked you about performance drag.

It isn't really a performance drag unless your box is stupidly slow to begin with. NOD32 uses up next to no resources here and I idle at 0% CPU usage.

My AVG uses about 1500 K of memory, which is absolutely nothing. Also idling at 0% CPU.

It doesn't really matter which you choose, as the 2 are probably the same thing.

Well that's NOD32. Norton 2007 grabbed 100MB of memory for its self and CPU usgae never falls below 5%. This is a P4 2.66GHz and 1/2 Gigabyte of RAM.

Norton always has been and always will be crap.

5 viruses?! That's ridiculous, you should start taking care of your security more if you manage to pick up 5 viruses. I used my box without a scanner for a year and didn't pick anything up, even after downloading some dodgy files from P2P and visiting some dodgy sites. 5 viruses, my god O.O

Yeah, but I thought you used some Linux distro most of the time, m0p?
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-06 22:16:53 UTC Post #218287
No, I haven't been using Linux on a daily basis for over a year. I've been using WinXP Pro for over a year without virus protection OR any sort of software firewall and I've NEVER had a virus.

I would attribute that to either luck, or knowledge. Some people just don't know how to avoid viruses, unfortunately.

i dont use a firewall and i never got a virus, except for a couple that ive downloaded from questionable places and AVG has detected.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to make AVG do a low-priority scan when it does its daily scan? Right now, it sucks resources up and all I want it to do is slowly scan while I map/game.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-07 23:14:36 UTC Post #218369
There is i think, when you first setup AVG, they will ask you these questions, after you install, i dont think you can change it back.

I'm also pretty sure it's possible.

NOD32 is pretty awesome, and theres a million warez for it if your a cheap bastard like me, but I never get viruses anyway. I'm pretty sure the last time I got a virus was when my friend told me to get limewire.
Posted 17 years ago2007-04-08 00:11:52 UTC Post #218373
Well I told it to do low-priority scans when I installed it. So when I manually begin a scan, it draws next to no resources. The scheduled scans, on the other hand, act like it's high-priority =/. I was wondering if I could change that.

QFT @ NOD32, though most of the keygens for it are viruses themselves :P
