So here's the deal, I've been mapping for a while now, growing tired of limited textures, and am an artist. See where this is going? I didn't think this belonged in the HL engine discussion. Can anyone point me in the right direction as far as getting my own textures made and turned into wads? I'm not talking Wally, I'm talking Photoshop. What program can put images together into a wad? Help here or just a link to somewhere that would be of help is much appreciated.

Well you need Wally to create the wads... But if you use photoshop to actually draw them, then import the file to wally, you can extract it to a wad.
Talk to (PM) Rimrook.
I dont happen to know a link.

Will images import into wally? What about the color palettes that Wally uses?

Thats limited to Half-Lifes engine. The textures are 256 colours only.

Its doesn't look that bad If you do it properly.

Thats strange, because i used 24-bit bitmaps before. Then i used Wally's batch conversion to compile those 24-bit textures into a wad. Works fine.
So: safe in 24-bit.

www.pslover.com would be a good place to start. It's got tons of tutorials on photoshop basics and texture making.

Though I'd also recommend buying some book on Photoshop. Nothing too big, just one, that covers the basics.

That texture making book that was included in Rimjob's gift was pretty awsome, you should check it out.

Heh, it wasn't complete. I wanted to read it all.

on the menu bar:

[Image] > [Mode] > [Indexed Color...]

This will turn your textur into a 256 color paletted file. It optimizes the color in several ways. You can choose some settings to see what you like best.

Then after that, you save the image as a .BMP

Letting Wally index the color can be slow. I don't do it.

As far as textures go, photoshop can paint the seams away useing the "Healing Brush" Tool.

First go to [Filter] > [Other] > [Offset] and move the sliders until you can clearly see the edges in the middle.

Select the Healing Brush and paint them away. Tip: Use a brush shape with a hard edge so it doesn't look cloned and crappy.

Any other questions I am willing to answer.

And sorry the texturing book was incomplete in the gift. Way too many pages to scan on a very limited amount of time. I could complete the book and reupload it sometime :/
