We have mini mapping compo's, so why don't organize a mini modeling compo as well? With Rimrook's Gift pack, its shouldn't be that hard to produce something nice. So i present:

Mini Modeling Compo #01 - Crowbar Replacement

Lets start easy: Make a crowbar replacement. Use the tools provided in Rimrook's Gift and read this thread carefully: http://twhl.co.za/forums.php?pgt=1&action=viewthread&id=13845&pg=1

You can make anything you want, as long as it is a Crowbar replacement model with fully working swing animations. You can use any modeling program you want: Milkshape, 3DMax, Blender, Maya, whatever, but since Rimrook's gift is focused on 3DMax, i think you should use that. Its up to you to decide.

Primary objective:
  • Make a fully functional Crowbar Replacement
Secondary objectives:
  • Originality
  • One or more idle animations (when not using the crowbar)
  • Different swing animations
  • Use the HD v_crowbar model (from Blue Shift HD pack) as the base
To submit your entry, email it to me using: junk@themightyatom.nl. Don't forget to actually attach your model in zip or rar format. Also, be sure to include a small readme.txt file with your name, nickname and anymore information. You may also include this info in the email itself.
If you have hosting capabilities, you can host the model yourself, but provide the download link in the email. If you don't have hosting, ill will host it for you. Just let me know if you can host or not.
When the results are in, they will all be posted in this thread and the winner gets to decide the next modeling compo.

You have four weeks (compo ends June 27th).

Well, its just a crowbar replacement, not an over the limit eight-barrel-minigun-with-6-attached-grenade-launchers (unless you model that and use that as a crowbar replacement).

How long then? 2 weeks? 3?

/me continues on, not knowing how to model.

Aye, max is quite easy though and has a nice workflow, i would suggest going for it.

Well I have Max 8 (have for quite a while) and all the tuts (thanks to Rim).. I just don't feel like learning a new program these days. :<

Can we include custom sounds as well? I would kinda need them for my entry.

Also, can Rim's tools be used with Max 7?

Ah man. I was gonna enter until I read that you need to animate. :(

Plugins are compatible with max6-7-8 so no worries, unless you're a tool and got max9.

This is a good idea. Maybe we should have a model vault hosted somewhere if its get out of control, like some things usually do around here.
you need to animate
Lazy. If you haven't noticed it already, all you do change out the crowbar mesh with your own object. Attach it to the hand and you're done. No need to animate unless you really want to. There is no need to bone and animate it unless it not a perfect crowbar replacement. i.e. zombie claws.

I read the brief wrong. I thought you had to make custom swing animations.

Sweet. It that case i'm in.

I thought there were going to be some prop models done first. those are easier than anything. But whatever, still an awsome compo, i just thought it would start a little easier. :/

btw, i forgot that there is some rigging involved... rigging is binding the vertices to the correct bones, sometimes harder than it sounds. But for the crowbar its still easy. You might get the end of the sleeve in with the hand when you rebind it. Which is only a few verts.

Rigging is more than what a paragraph can say, shoot for a web tutorial if all else fails. Eventually it must be learned, if not, I went a long time without any rigging knowledge.

I did it with a skin modifier and selected the bone that controls the crowbar, that is correct right?
Posted 16 years ago2007-06-01 03:28:18 UTC Post #224005
I'm going to reskin the crowbar green and submit that, I expect no less than first place.

Yay!
Get modelling!

Note that you can earn extra points of you complete any of the secondary objectives.

If this is successfull, we might consider a prop modeling compo (For HL1).

@Pepper: Yeah that sounds right. You can always select the bone and move it to test it out.

I think the prop model compo will be more interesting, because you can make a wide variety of lab equipment, machinary, and gadgets for use in the classic black mesa style. As well as plant models. (no matter what there is always a shortage)

Yeah indeed, foilage is a big shortage.

It did work though, i cant get it to keyframes the animations, but im looking up a bunch of tutorials so i know what to do.

Also, where can I download RimRook's gift pack? There wasn't a link in the thread you linked to...
Posted 16 years ago2007-06-03 20:31:19 UTC Post #224334
You didn't get it? Eeeeee its no longer available.

Also, models with transparency is done like you would do a normal transparent texture for hammer. Only you enable it in the Model viewer and save as somewhere. Likewise for chrome and additive. I use jed's model viewer, it can enable that stuff.

Pretty much utter, utter failure. :zonked:

This compo ends tomorrow, but i don't believe any more entries come in so i declare this compo done and over.

Urbanebula: you win. Ill upload your model later today.

Feel free to start a modeling compo of your own... Or something else.

Heh, winner by default. Can't beat it.

How about, Make an Amusing GMan model hack.

Replace his suitcase, change the skin, model or animations in some way.

Bonus Points for:
-Doing all 3
-originality
-Funniez

Otherwise someone else can think of one. I suck at coming up with ideas.

don't know how much experience anyone has tho. Replacing the model is different from modelling. modelling requires time, effort, and practice and is worth every second in the end.

I say go with a props mini compo. Just to get started. Of course, i can answer questions.

I thought i already linked this, but i guess not. Here's wavelength's take on the .qc script commands. I should also post a basic script that i always copy-paste when I do props, which is simple to manipulate for your preference.

Would it be too much trouble if we made one of these compos for both engines and judged them sepparately?

Back from the semi-dead to take part in this compo. I'll be in and out like that*snap*. Its funny, when I read some of the modelling threads you guys have started, how little most of you know about modelling. You're still rambling on about polygon limits and crap like that when you have no real experience in the field. Take a quick tour through the Clan of the Dead Goat community(www.cdg.net) and you will learn fast. Or you could just yell at me because you think you're right and I'm just a dumbass, which is to be expected these days.

The model is done and skin is currently being worked on, and I already have a set of animations ready to go(not mine, but the rules don't say to make mine so cry me a river). Still working on the polymer, and the metal will be tough...
A tip to aspiring skinners: dodges and burns are everything, that's not a joke.

WIP, everything is done through Milkshape(because I don't do this enough to learn 3dsMax and Milkshape works fine for me):

Edit: Didn't notice that it ended so soon, and that a "winner" had already been picked. I guess this means that this one is over.
I want to see what Urb turned in. And, Pepper, post the wireframe for that guitar, I want to see how its over 2000 polygons.

Woops, didn't know you were entering this one... Oh well.

Rimrook, if you want to start a prop modelling compo, go right ahead, since you know a lot about modelling.

World Crafter, way to come off like an arrogant douche, especially since according to you you've only been modelling for a few months. And that skin is pretty lame, tbqh.

That aside, nice model.

You think I started using modelling programs when I made my first model? What kind of a narrow outlook is that? I've been using Milkshape for hacking models and editing animatons since at least September 27th, 2006(my first real release). And I know I've known how to use the program since at least June 30, 2005 because I made 3 autosmoothed releases around that time. I have also been hanging around CDG, what many would consider to be home of literally some of the best modellers out there, for a few years. So yeah, sorry if I come off as arrogant, but I do happen to know my shit.
