iTunes 7.3 comes with a "Apple Mobile Device Support" entry in the Add/Remove Programs App. When Apple turned on AppleTV searching in iTunes, I ticked it off. Since i'm not going to get an iPhone, is it safe to remove this?

Probably, but that might also handle iPod support as well.

iPods are very nice music players if you're willing to pay the Apple tax and have the memory to run iTunes.

I've got iTunes because I have two iPods, duh. Otherwise i'd be using WMP11 or some shitty app by Creative/Sony/Walmart/etc.

Or you could use Winamp, since it supports external devices like Mp3 players now.

Yeah, I have an iPod and switched over to Winamp with iPod support a while ago. It takes a bit of tweaking but it's much more convenient and saves me the hassle of iTunes/Quicktime.

Or just use Foobar and Windows Explorer, like a proper MP3 device should.

Having said that, I would buy an iPod, if I could use it like I said above. And the iPhone looks damn tasty.

Use an iPod with ... WinAmp? I could do it, because I scrubbed all of my purchased songs of DRM, but as much as iTunes is bloated, it's still much better than some half-assed plug-ins.

It's actually not a plugin, but integrated into the latest version of the actual Winamp program.
