I think Luke has a point. (Some) hardcore TFC fans didn't like TF2 because they changed a lot. I never played TF or TFC much, so I guess I'm viewing TF2 as any other multiplayer FPS - and in that aspect, it's awesome.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-21 15:06:51 UTC Post #236778
It's the same reason why the CS 1.6 people don't like source.
They're just farr to used to the original gameplay.
Personally, i never liked TF too much, and TF2 isnt all that great, but it's a hellova lot of fun to play.

TFC got me started on online computer gaming. That was, and still is, a great game. I think TF2 reflects how good online gaming can be.

Tetsu0, the original Counter-Strike has pretty much flawless gameplay. The only problems are the graphics and pre-pubrescent twats that can't deal with being out of the game for 3 minutes. They should go play Halo co-op.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-21 18:18:39 UTC Post #236787
That's Counter-Strike's BIGGEST downfall (all versions of the game). Everyone is really immature and acts 5 yrs old, or they really ARE 5 yrs old (I actually seen some who are).

Even TFC had some like that, but not as much, and DOD had very few too...
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-21 22:26:15 UTC Post #236793
Yeah. And again, CS is simple. Buy a gun, shoot people.

If you're really good, you can like.. plant or defuse a bomb.

I loved CS 1.6 and i love Source even more.

But TFC's gameplay is much more intricate than CS. You actually need to work as a team kinda.

idk there's more to it than that, but probably explains why theres less whiny nubs on TFC than CS

You're supposed to work as a team in CS too, but everyone can do everything. TFC and TF2 is class-based teamplay, making one person's abilities useful combined with others...

CS is Pray and Spray nubs

exactly my point. the people dont take the time to learn why TFC is so great because they expect to jump in and just start killing.

while that's a main role in the game, its not everything.
that's basically what i'm tryin to say

The classes in TFC are horribly unbalanced, and the entire combat system revolves around grenade spam. There is NO team effort in TFC anymore, its all medics conc jumping to the flag and bullshit like that.

Yeah, Ep 2s ending completely caught me off guard, and then...Well, I was shocked.

And Gmans appearances in Ep 2 were cool as well.

Portal was amazingly fun. The twist at the end of the testing was really something. I thought the ending was a little predictable.

TF2 is fucking awesome. I can't get enough of it.

The G-Man was presented in Episode Two far better than in Half-Life 2, in my opinion. He felt much more sinister in the episode, and I think his cut-scene after you save Alyx was far better choreographed. When he appeared on the screen at White Forest after the transmission, I nearly crapped my pants. :D

Posted 17 years ago2007-10-24 21:08:51 UTC Post #236960
I don't know about that, Dave. I mean, TF2 takes a lot more patience than most of Valve's online games.

Edit: Oh you were talking about CS. Never mind.

But still, no matter what, TF2/TFC probably has the most mature acting fan-base, all those other games are filled with 7 year-old flame spamming... "n00b f4g0ts"

Played through the first two levels of Episode Two last night, i'm damn impressed with the numerous additions and tweaks to both the Source engine and the Half-Life 2 world rules, it feels very fresh.

Had a quick run around some TF2 maps, look nice but they feel a little constricted and bare. I'll reserve full judgement until I've had a decent play online though, of course. I also jumped into Portal for a 'quick, half-hour play' and ended up going through the whole thing. It's fun, despite the hideous maps, but a little over-rated I think. The Turrets, final battle and end song are comedy gold, though.

Play with the dev comentary on. It explains quite a bit about how crucial each element of the theme is.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-24 22:29:14 UTC Post #236967
I can understand all that, but you guys do realise that it wasn't the main Valve guys who designed the levels? It was the people from Narbacular Drop and as such they're pretty new to Source mapping. It shows in the lighting and repetitive textures (I won't comment on the architecture, due to the portal limitations).

BUT, it's not important to the gameplay and I never made a bid deal out of it. Just in comparisson to Episode Two, it's not as impressive or professional. You can have good looking maps that suit the theme, just so you know.
Strider StriderTuned to a dead channel.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-24 22:45:07 UTC Post #236968
It's very important to gameplay, actually. That's the point. Until you leave the chambers and escape into the guts of the facility, the chambers are designed as simple as possible. That means repeating textures so a player can know instantly whether or not a Portal can be placed, for example while in an infinite loop. That also helps set a clear contrast once the player leaves the chambers, there is stuff lying around, dirt and grime, interesting lights and textures and details. It is just meant to reinforce the players feeling that he is really not supposed to be back there, that he is really escaping even though we all know he has no actual freedom and is being led around by a carrot on a stick.
Posted 17 years ago2007-10-24 22:55:29 UTC Post #236969
During the 'behind the scenes' sections, you still get the feeling it was all constructed for the Portal device, though. But really, those scenes, and the GLaDOS chamber were the best looking parts of the game because they had much more variation (the grimey parts still had some ugly lighting, though).

A few texture variations, and improved lighting WOULD NOT break the gameplay, and frankly, to say otherwise is silly.

But as i've stated twice now, it's less than perfect visuals don't ruin the gameplay or the fun, it's just the difference between a great game, and an amazing game, and it is a great little game.

Some good maps here. That site also has tutorials on how to map for portal and whatnot. I've set portal mapping up but haven't really felt inspired. So far I've just made boxes for flying around in.

Also, Strider is wrong.

We established that. But I didn't say it, because I don't want him to hate me, because he's one of the compo judges. Correct?

I also am waiting for the Official SDK files, as well as the new engine integration into HL2 and HL2DM. I REALLY want the new particle system for my compo map, so I'm SOOOO re-making it in the updated engine.

Particles. DO WANT.

No need to worry about that, i'll be looking at each of the maps with no regard as to who made them until after i've decided who I think should win.

"finished"?

Go for every advanced chamber.

Also, we need a thread for time, fewest steps and fewest portals to keep this interesting. If you have no reason to get better at it, Portal is over in a couple hours which would be quite a shame.

Also, maps plskthnxs.

I got a silver for "least portals" on the first 2 challenges and that's about it, I know HOW I can get a gold on the first challenge but I haven't actually managed to pull it off yet =[ Overall, Portal is awesome though, EP2 as well.

The Source engine is still looking sexy as hell despite it's age (yes I know they've changed a fair bit since HL2 was released, but it's still the same engine), and the forest areas looked beautiful, despite the some of the obvious lazy mapping (sprites for tree foliage, 2D skyboxes in a few places, etcetera, but then again I assume alot of that is down to performance tuning as opposed to laziness).

I've yet to play TF2, but Portal and EP2 are superb.
