i don't think it's dynamic...

Pretty sure it's just more pre-set cinematic physics in action.

I think it has something to do with deforming and a certain trigger with certain settings so that it deforms in a certain way. Catch my certain drift?

Certainly.

I just want them to fix the stupid SDK. Old SDK has a broken model viewer in Hammer, and the new SDK doesn't work with pre-Orange Box games.

guys - the Gman will always carry the briefcase - it's his lunch box!!

You gotta take your luch with ya when you go interdimentional shifting!

Might not have a diner on the otehr side. I mean did any of you see a diner in HL? If yes - what's on the menu?

But in dev commentary they said, they SAID, that the bridge was dynamic and calculated in game.. (and by bridge I mean the first bridge which breaks during the portal storm)

sdk wont even start for me...........let alone crash

It's more of a bastardised version of calculations if you know what I mean...if the physics was properly calculating how that bridge would collapse using its physics engine solely, the game wouldn't exactly run too swell at that point.

It means they used the supposed 'Cinematic Physics' to compile as you will what the physics would look like if the model was triggered to do so. So in other words they made a model, used a program to make it break realistically for them and then put it in the map and voila. So don't expect to use it in other words D:

Yeah although I haven't listened to them I heard in the Ep2 intro map one of them explained the whole bridge thing and someone told me he jokes and says "Cinematic physics uses particles made by a monkey that types it into a computer...he then laughs and he says forget it modders. You wont be using it." (It wasn't EXACTLY that but that is what I was told)

Unless that was a joke D:

oooh, it appears as if I've been missunderstood a bit.

I'm not saying that you can use this cinematics physics thing, but I am saying that it is calculated in game.

If this is some kind of weird tool or entity or whatever, then we might be able to use it in the future?
Becuase if it is calculated ingame, then it can't be a model.

Has anyone found the bridge model and checked it's animations anyway? That would clear up a few things.

It's an off-topic question, but why is that bridge not pointing towards City17 at the beginning of Ep2? And why is it so far-far away from where it was when the Citadel blew up? :D
Posted 17 years ago2007-11-15 16:29:17 UTC Post #238557
I was going to say "because railroads can curve, retard" but then I remembered that when the Citadel did explode, you were clearly still traveling straight away from it.

No clue. Nice find.

I assume it's because that would make too much sense. :D

Err?
No one said where the bridge was pointing.
It could just be a road going straight through... wherever you are.

At the end of Ep1, your train is moving on a straight line away from the citadel.
At the beginning of Ep2, the train has fallen from the railway, which is now turned 90? in relation to the Citadel, which in turn is many more kilometers away.

It's neat, though, the way the begining vista in Episode Two was choreograhped, where you see the destroyed Citadel and immediately see the bridge collapse as you turn around.

I think the answer to that bridge thing is "who cares". Not everything has to make rational sense, and it wasn't so jarring that people actually actively noticed it (bar a few).

I think the biggest problem is not the orientation of the bridge (which was needed to let the player see that nice collapsing effect), but rather the teleportation that has taken place since the end of Ep1 to that map. You're basically up in a mountain now. Maybe Gman moved the train somehow...
Posted 17 years ago2007-11-16 04:01:26 UTC Post #238608
I don't see it as being so impossible for the train to have kept moving during and following the Citadel's destruction, especially considering the relatively unsettled appearance of the area's surrounding City 17.

EDIT: Plus Alyx's comments about hearing Vortigaunts suggest some outside help in getting them to relative safety.

I think the damage done to the railway was as a result of the portal storms that occur after the Citadel's demise. Obviously when you see the first portal storm in the game, it has a pretty profound effect on the already damaged bridge.

My guess: the Citadel collapses during the escape. The train continues onward for a decent distance (and not going directly straight, obviously), before being hit by one of the portal storms, causing the bridge to partially collapse, sending the train plunging into the ravine.

Or it could just be a shitty bridge.. i mean.. did you see the way that thing crumbled?!
