i was just wondering for shits and giggles if it is possible to use more than one machine to compile. and if so, would it really be any faster? i saw a few topics on this somewhere but nothing ever came of it.

I believe the compile processes (csg, bsp, vis, rad) have to proceed one another. Therefore making a multi-machine-compile extraordinarily difficult, or impossible.

Possible if you network the computer via LAN and somehow set up the second computer as another processor. I've seen it done and its all too necessary for rendering CG stuff. Wouldn't be too different from compiling maps I think. The compiler recognizes dual core and multiple processors so I think its possible.

In response to that, i'll stick with:

That would be nice if you had a few computers with relatively decent dual-cores. That is, if you could figure out how to do it...

yeah well i was just wondering, since i have 3 computers hooked up at home i just thought if i could make them all work together on a compile i wouldnt have to wait so long.

Afaik, none of the compile tools have network capabilities. Not sure on the current functionality of Zoner's tools however.

I know with Source it's possible to do multi-machine compiles (rather than give each machine a compile process, multiple machines work on an individual process before moving onto the next), but the tool needed to do this is only avaliable from Valve and you have to pay a fee for it (I imagine it's all to do with licensing Source out).

Netvis has network capabilities though.
