According to your post, all I can see is a person who has a %20 chance to succeed and not very serious. You cant gather a team like that. Nobody can... People need to know your mapping or leadership skills.
(if you have no mapping skills at all). Also, a leader with no mapping skills or modelling, coding wont be taken much seriously by his team. No hard feelings but that is the truth in my opinion. Because I seen mod leaders with no skills at all, forcing his/her team too much. In the end, he loses the team and the mod.
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-04 05:04:50 UTC Post #239843
Agreed, you need to take this a lot more seriously as if it were a real prospect. Nobody would work for a company if they advertised like this. You need to use media. Shots of your previous work. Stuff thats been done so far.

If there is no progress on this mod so far go and get creating. Then advertise the hell out of it in all the important places such as ModDB and you'll get your team.

No... my point was, with a line like that, you'd have to change it to "three days" tomorrow, "four days" the day after tomorrow, and so on. It's not a dated journal entry or something, so the ambiguous "two days ago" could be any time at all. :)

No, they definitely aren't. They're point-entity lit boxes with standard Half-Life prefabs sprinkled around randomly for absolutely no reason! You're not even using OpenGL or Direct3D rendering modes. Are you really that bad, or do you take us for fools? I mean, seriously, is this a joke or something? You are acting like the very caricature of a misguided beginner. I'm sorry if you're offended, or I'm being too blunt about it, but honestly it's hard to be this perfectly bad at mapping. The best I can say is that you took some time to make (or more likely download) some custom textures.

You mentioned something about models though. Are you just referring to the prefabs, or are you really modeling stuff too? If so, that might be your forte, and you should be pursuing that. If not...well, do us all all a favor and read some tutorials on mapping concepts, and practice more. A LOT more.

Anyway, you aren't going to get any members with content looking like that. Most you'll probably find is somebody to guide you along and help you with mapping, if you're lucky.

well im doing this all alone while multi tasking..... and whats wrong with these shots? can u be specific? and im not modeling im customizing...
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-08 04:21:45 UTC Post #240198
I was very specific in describing how almost everything was wrong. You have no visible geometry other than cubes, and you've filled these cubes with standard prefabs that are included in Hammer. Nothing more to it. Your screenshots are 640x480, and you are obviously running in software mode. This leads me to believe that you haven't even taken the effort to open your settings in Half-Life, unless you're working on a severely handicapped computer.

Please, ditch those prefabs, make your own items, learn how to build even slightly interesting architecture, and then maybe just maybe come back.

i dont no how to make my own objects if i did i would
as much as im doing everything else alone :
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-08 04:26:45 UTC Post #240200
You make it the same way you make all your other world geometry, including those cubes that everything is contained in. You don't even have basic understanding of how to use Hammer, and you're already pursuing an entire mod! You've gotta learn this stuff.

OHHHH.... dang it i missed that clipping tut. thanks alot that must of been why i was confused
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-08 04:39:50 UTC Post #240206
And just play around. Aside from saying "Use brushes and the clip tool" nobody can really explain how to do something like make an item or interesting architecture. You can be given ideas, but it's something you just have to do for yourself once you know the basic ideas behind mapping. If you know how to create a square brush, you already know how to make rudimentary sinks, chairs, desks, hallways with pillars, etc.
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-08 19:45:45 UTC Post #240282
Man those screenies take me back. Like 10 years or so. :death:

You might want to make a few smaller maps first, get to grips with what the engine can handle and work your way up before trying to design a mod and lead a team of developers. Most of the guys who have started large mods and especially mod teams (myself included) have really put their heads down and studied the techniques from all over the internet.

When you put it like that it sounds like a lot of work but thats exactly what is needed. The more effort you put in the more you get out. The same rule that applies everywhere else in life. :)

Umm... that might be slightly better... but stop fitting all your textures like that!

About the modeling program, you'll probably want to look into Milkshape 3D. It costs money, but you can still use the trial.

Well everyone has been honest. You're new to this and I think you should make map after map working on new skills until you feel you are ready to make a real map. Compare yours to others and you'll see.

You got BETTER lighting and BETTER architecture, but not much better.

You need to be really critical of yourself if you're going to keep improving. If these guys hadn't criticized your first shots, you would've just been content with them instead of trying again. It's easier if you can criticize your own work as well, and then try something again and improve it.

Of course, we're here to criticize so I'll point something out, and you can try it again, and it will be better.

Look at a table and chair, and then look at your table and chairs. Do those actually look like a table and chairs?
Posted 16 years ago2007-12-10 10:09:26 UTC Post #240477
Work on proportions and the sizes of thing. Study a chair, study a table and build them, not representations of the general shapes of them.

Also, add a small trim along the bottom of the wall. Will look more real-like.

I'm not sure what texture pack your using but to be brutally honest, it sucks.

As for the room, its bland. Brown, brown and more brown with a bit of red in it.

The chairs and table need to be overall much much thinner. The grid does go lower than 16X16 units. Just zoom in and spend some more time on details. And as Rimrook said, study rooms and furniture in the real world.

I have learned a lot playing CS maps. There are great ones with great architecture, and if you want to learn entities options then Nipper maps are so useful.

Don't discourage, firsts maps are always shit. I've only compiled 1 map and it was a shitty aim_, then I've done some other map attempts and I've learned a lot doing them (but shitty ones), so I didn't compile them. I've done a great de_ map too, and I'm so satisfyed, but it was completelly unoptimized, so the compile takes hours and hours. I leave this map and now I'm doing a project/new style map for CS, full optimized and using complex entities events.

So don't discourage with it, it will probably take about 2 months to learn how hammer works. I recommend you not to start making a MOD first. Make some CS, DOD or other HLMODS maps, and then, when u think u are prepared, do it.

Also the textures aren't fine. Vertically tiled bricks on an interior wall? The entire thing?

oups ! I'm a little bit sleepy , sorry !

I thought it was only a interior wall , not bricks :aggrieved:

Ok , that's enough . Encourage greiko !

Because at this point it's less of a mod, and more of an early attempt at mapping. It looks that way, at least.

You just need a bit more before you start recruiting for a mod is all. Keep at this though, each one of the shots improves a bit over the last one.

You can't start a MOD without knowing anything about mapping, codding and all the stuff. So first lear mapping , show your projects and if you are good some people will join your MOD.

I'm astounded at how little perseverance today's beginner mappers have. It's like if they don't see instant gratification, they just give up and never go back to it. I've had ups and downs, but I never completely gave up after somebody told me I sucked. No wonder the modding community is shrinking, with people like this.
