My brother always got counterstrike, so I wouldn't have a clue where to get it from. Does anyone know where I can get counterstrike, taking into consideration that I don't have steam readily availible?

You have to have steam, otherwise you can't actually play CS. You can pick up a retail copy somewhere, but it still won't let you play it without Steam.

And yes, you absolutely have to pay for it.

If you just want to play it over a LAN, you can still download CS 1.5 for free on some sites. Won't support all maps due to lack of Steam's features, but it'll work for 98 percent of them.

1.6 is available Steamless (illegally of course). You will have to do some special searching because contemporary searches won't give you what you want. And anyway, you can't play it online. So unless you're content with playing bots for hours on end, I wouldn't even bother.

You can play it online, since there's loads of nonsteam servers, supporting pretty much everything Steam 1.6 would support.
The only problems with Nonsteam are that you're not able to play on Steam servers and the shitloads of cheaters everywhere.

If you have the old non-steam version of Half-Life (the old WON version) you can play CS, HL, TFC with bots on your own machine.

However, I don't know if the files are still available anywhere.

What? A really long while back I got HL, CS, DoD, TFC, and all that crap for free for some reason, now they cost money? That faggotry...

do you have your old half life cd? If so, dwnload CS 1.5 (I think its better the 1.6) and then search for the steamless project. Basically some guy was able to construct his own WON master servers, and made WON2. Needs an update though found at their site so HL can connect to the new master servers.
