I have been mapping in hammer sdk for a while now and i have been trying to get my custom textures to work... BUT THEY DONT. I was reading the tut from blackviper and i got to where it says to drag the tga onto the vtex, it just doesnt work. Vtex pops up (black box) then disappears. It doesnt even pause to tell me wat happened. All i want to do is put in a simple texture and its impossible for me. can someone PLEASE help me?

nah i dont.... i spose i cood try and get it... dont particularly wanna pay $100 for it tho. I have a vtf for some and they still dont seem to work tho. Could this b due to a corrupt vtf?

Download a program called VTFEdit. You can import images (bmp/jpg/tga etc) and simply save them as vtf files. It's so easy it's criminal. You can also open, create and edit the vmf files that Source materials need.

You can also generate normal maps with it, very useful.

Ok i will try that. Thank you very much for replying :D.
Also i think my vtex is not right.... i read that it is supposed to be in sourcesdk_contendbin or somwhere (not sure where...) and i checked and i didnt have it there. I found it somwhere else and copied it there, but i think that may also be a problem. Could re-installing fix this (what if it doesnt)?

just use VTFEdit. you'll never need vtex again.

One last thing... where do i have to put the .vtf and the .vmt to use the textures in hammer? (when i use VTFEdit)

Well, it depends what game you're mapping for. For all games, there is a 'materials' folder in the game directory (so it'd be something like usernamegamegamematerials). You can put them in there and Hammer should pick them up (make sure you restart Hammer though).

They can be in another folder in the materials folder, yeah. They can't just be in any old folder somewhere on your computer though. ;>

I have made my vtf's and am just waiting to test them in hammer.... i have some error but i think its steam being overloaded ;)

guess wat....
it doesnt work.
In hammer i can find the textures but the r pink and black checkers.... same as when i apply them.
I have had this happen before.... please help

hmm....
i have a directory
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\lilfellabob\counter-strike source\cstrike\materials\custom
In here i have many textures... one is called AK-47
I have AK-47.vtf and a AK-47.vmt, the vtf opens in VTFEdit fine...
in the .vmt i have this

"LightmappedGeneric"
{
"$basetexture" "Users/Josh/other/Desktop/maps/textures/AK-47"
}

Your basetexture line is completely wrong. It should look like this:

"LightmappedGeneric"
{
"$basetexture" "custom/AK-47"
}
