What is NIHILANTH in the end of the game half - life?
Posted 15 years ago2008-05-23 00:17:03 UTC Post #250279
You could have added this to the "Who is Gordon" thread. Seriously...

Nihilanth is the being that controls all the Xenian lifeforms, or at least the ones with those green bands around them. He himself was probably under the control of the Combine, and was being used to unleash hell on earth during the portal storms.

Actually, when they were making Half-Life, I doubt they had any idea about the Combine at all, but the Nihilanth is definitely controlling the Vortigaunts and some other creatures. That's why they are released when you kill him.

Now, I don't know exactly what this dude is, but he most closely resembles a massive enlarged version of those Alien Controllers you see floating around. Maybe the next evolutionary step of them or something. They're probably the most intelligent of all the creatures in Xen, which explains his high position of authority.

*lols at big ugly baby.

Srry, I don't think that the nihilanth had anything to do with the combine.
He the primary ruler of the Xen and he was defeated, there for all of his minions except for the slaves, ither died out or retreated to far off planets.

On the other hand, The yet unknown ruler/ruler's of the combine are a different breed. A breed from a different galaxy. if they were controlling nihilianth then all the controllers and alien grunts shouldn't have gone away of died out, the combine would help them. but the combine didnt help the controllers and alien slaves because they didnt acknowledge them.

Also, combines are robot-like, Xen creatures were flesh.

have you played gun-man chronicles? the combine are like the drones and the xen life are like the Xenomes (and humans are humans) all from different factions and all fighting each other.

If you noclip to the nearest void when nihilanth's "overloading" so you can escape the wrath of the trigger_teleport (to avoid getting teleported to the next level) then go back to nihilanth you can see that he dosen't die.

Actually, Combine minions are more like cyborgs. Mechanical enhancements of flesh and blood beings. And looking at Nihilanth, you can see the metal base it sits upon, and a number of large stitches that seem to hold it together. Its legs even look like they have been amputated.

My thinking is that the Nihilanth was equivalent to Doctor Breen... and probably represented an early attempt to make a trans-xenian being. Even the grey skin resembles that of the trans-human soldiers and the stalkers.

One popular theory holds that he broke away from Combine rule and led his minions to Earth to take over and make a new home. Subsequently, the Combine followed them and forced the breech at Black Mesa open further to spread their invasion and devastation.

really? lol, fake. hey, maybe nihilianth is still alive and hes controlling the combines? could be possible that you only made him get beaten up but and retreat instead of die.

true. but if he was controlled by a higher being, who is it? it cant be one of those flying dudes in ep1 and ep2 because there are more than one. or maybe they share their throne? or something... or maybe theres a big daddy who created em? lol

Nihilanth was Breen for Xen, as Wildcat so wonderfully put it. Obviously that wasn't what Valve was thinking when they originally made the game, because the idea of the combine didn't even exist then. Originally, making some kind of evil cyborg overlord probably just looked cool, but it just happened to play so well into the combine story they developed for HL2 that they ran with it.

Nihilanth says himself several times "We're slaves, we're slaves!" so the most logical explenation at this time is that Nihilanth was under combine control.
I bet we'll get to know more about Nihilanth in Ep3 ;>

They are now under the command of whoever stood over Nihillianth
They didn't just dissapear!

The combine has no use for them yet anyways.
Maybe they will use them now that they are starting to loose control?

Ep3 has no release date yet I believe.

No, but Valve obviously thought about the story so it inclines (heh, is that even a word? :P) with the story of HL1.

Personally I think the vague story is one of the biggest parts what makes Half-Life one of the best games... EVER. (And no, i'm not a fanboy :p)

When HL1 was made, Valve had 20 employees.

Now it has more than 120.

Half-Life used to be simpler.

I was gonna say just the opposite! The mapping and the models are shit! And HL is more or less just a modification of Quake1.

And just to clear thing up for the people that will think "Then what the fuck are you even doing here, if you don't like HL?" like some of you already have said :P

...I like some of the modifications and I like to map for them :P That's why Im here!

Im more of a Quake II and Painkiller kinda guy, I don't care why Im shooting people as long as Im doing it! :P

@Skals; Yes, it's created with the base of Quake, they just modified the engine a bit. But apart from that, it's just another mod.

The thing to remember is that Xen wasn't the vortigaunts' homeworld. Nobody knows where the vortigaunts actually came from. Xen has no native life, its just a middle-man type world that's used for teleportation. Sort of like taking a plane somewhere that requires a stop at another airport somewhere in between your start and your finish.

Also, big wtf on the vagina ballhand there.

They said that it was going to follow up were Quake II left... IT DID NOT! :o Everything changed from brown to green, rust to shiny and stroggs to wankers... :( All the original weapons went down the crapper and all the enemies were changed/removed... Quake 4 is balls :(

BUT
You're right it kinda dropped the oldschoolism that is Quake 2, but at least it continued the story in a different but still good way!
Except the end which made no sense ;O

They did keep some enemies tho!
The standard stroggs were pretty boring and didn't at all look like the ones from the previous games, so that doesn't count, but the Gladiator was pretty awesome, and.. wait.. only the gladiator? I guess that is a bit shit then, but still, gg!

In answer to the latest babble...

Half-Life 1 WAS good in it's hay-day, the original now is really out-of-date but with people coming out and adding hi-def models and textures we continue to push the HL engine. I think the HL engine is equally as powerful as the HL2 engine BUT the HL2 engine was built to cover a wider base so allows more effects. I've seen very HL2 maps in Half-Life 1 look almost up to scratch, but anyway, you'll all yell at me now for saying that... :plastered:

I can't even buy Quake 4 anymore, i can't find it anywhere, Quake Wars look much better anyway.

As for Ninilith, this is my theory:

Ninilith was the central being for the xen race which was much more diverse than they actually were able to show in HL1. Ninilith communicated via telepathy to all his minions. The alien grunts and islaves were his personal slaves, who were forced to do his bidding, if they didn't their collars they wear, which are restraint devices, would kill them. Look in the slave's model animations, you can see one where they cower in pain because they did wrong. When Ninilith was killed by Gordon, the Xen race was in choas, without a leader. These other Xen beings called Advisors (in HL2) moved up and took over the leadership but they had their own plans and tried to kill all the old xen creatures to build their own empire, hence why the alien slaves (now call vortigaunts) are free because they escaped. The Advisors captured humans and turned them into the combine which they used to attack earth and won in seven hours after Dr Breen surrendered Earth to them. That's my thoery

You're a half-life mapper.
Who hasn't played enough half-life to know what xen is?

Basically.. it's a world you're teleported to where shit goes down and big things die.

it's already known that the combine initially go through a mediator, so as to help control the population before invasion. in the case of earth, this was dr. breen. as said previously, nihilanth is "dr. breen" for xen. end of story.

Have you even played any other first person shooters from that era? In comparison to Half-Life, the maps were were all extraordinarily bland and uninspired, mostly made up of large blocks and built around the textures.

Dude? Quake II? That was fuwking SEXEEH! It pre-dates HL and still looks way better. And Quake III came two years after that, that was fucking hot aswell.

So you're almost right. A lot of the games did look like shit. But Quake II came to the rescue, HL followed shortly and then Quake III.

Quake 2 was not at all as sexy as Half-life.
The textures were ugly, it was all grey and the sprites were quite shitty.
Basically everything was made out of huge and very noticeable squares
Half-life however, was not ;>

Also I believe Half-life has an improved lightning system etc etc.
Remember, Half-life used an IMPROVED version of the quake 2 engine.
So it would be weird if HL is uglier than Q2. ?O
