COMPRESSED WITH WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER!
anyway, this is a quick visual demonstration on how to make a crappy mountain, hill thing.

It didn't take long to make.

So, do you think these tutorials are useful at all?
I think some noobs could learn from it.

www.dbx.exofire.net/mapping/videos/mountainedge.wmv

Oh and feel free to point out any mapping flaws.

download the map here
http://www.dbx.exofire.net/mapping/moutain.rar
(you probably won't have the textures I used, deal with it)

Eh: The idea of this thread is more to discuss whether video tutorials are useful or not, remember commentary or sub titles can easily be included.

Looks really cool!

Looks like you do the same thing i do, hitting shift+c instead of shift+x for the clip tool (i saw the camera thing pop up); i do it constantly too! = )

Tutorial looks good. other video tutorials you could see the grid a lot clearer though, not like it's a big deal. one thing maybe is reduce the grid intesity, maybe the brush lines will stand out better? (i think Muzzleflash /Rimrook/Tetsu0 might have tips since they've done some good-looking video tutorials in the past)

Also, you've GOT to add a kick-ass soundtrack... = )

Me and jaardsi did this 4 years ago (links don't work, sadly). Holy crap, btw, four years...

Anyway, it's not a bad idea. Needs better quality and a web-video instead of a WMV file (eg. Youtube... only not youtube, because the quality is too shitty). Anyway, shouldn't be too hard to find a good flash video host. A narrating voice should add a lot too.
Posted 15 years ago2008-05-26 00:46:34 UTC Post #250495
I do like the narrating voice idea.
Unfortunately i don't think there's a way around the fuzzy grid lines. As mine were pretty crappy as well.
I just had less grid marks on my screen. i think that helped a bit.

Lol it's funny someone asked to add a Video Tut section to TWHL 4 years ago too :)

BTW.
Nice work kraken. :)

The largest problem with video tuts is that phone line and internet capped people are going to be highly left out, should they want/need to look over them.

Video tuts are nice, but it would leave people out depending on how useful they are =(

Too true, now let's lord it over him by streaming high resolution porn and drinking all his Baileys.

the original video file was high quality, I just literally chucked it into windows movie maker (fail I know) and compressed it (also fail, I know)

also, how the hell can you see what I'm listening too :S

edit: oh, I've got to add one; well then that would kind of ruin commentary now wouldn't it :P

You can upload high quality video's to Youtube and watch it in HQ. I believe Habboi knows how.

Well, not really "high quality", just "higher quality" than the usual Youtube quality. It's still pretty awful.

I'm talking about full-resolution fully readable screencasts like these (terrible examples, they were all I could think of): http://www.rubyonrails.org/screencasts

Fuck them! Seriously, this is the Youtube age, they're negligible.

I can do that zombieloffe given I had a good flv encoder.
Posted 15 years ago2008-05-27 07:44:39 UTC Post #250573
Try "Riva FLV Encoder" as I found it was a good FLV tool!

FLV stream

http://dbx.exofire.net/mapping/videos/mountaintutorial.htm

and yes, I could have made the quality much better, I can get a nice clear grid by the way, I just set the bitrate a little low and couldn't be bothered re-encoding a new one.

edit: I upped the quality to what I think is sufficient
http://dbx.exofire.net/mapping/videos/mountaintutorialHR.htm
the files start to get big though, some what 30 seconds being 6 mb :[
I don't know much about flv encoding anyways.
Posted 15 years ago2008-05-28 16:10:30 UTC Post #250638
Links don't work.

6 MB for 30 seconds is fine, as long as the buffering works.

the links are working fine for me, you 404ing?
the player takes a few seconds to load.

The first link works but the higher quality isn't loading...Just hangs on loading the page...

Works for me now. The HR one is good, appropriate screen size. Maybe consider switching to White on Black-grid / No Grid for future videos. We should really start making a load of these. Narrating = a huge plus.

yes, I might actually make some for TWHL, but I need to buy a new microphone first.

My attempt at a video tutorial regarding arched doorways. It's really just a shot at making video tutorials. The quality is pretty bad, even though the original AVI looks fine - anyone have any suggestions instead of Riva FLV Encoder for encoding AVI to FLV?

The pink colour was added by the microsoft video codec, btw, it's not my own ;) .
Posted 15 years ago2008-06-01 07:47:25 UTC Post #250799
I know what you sound like! D:

Quality is fine, really. It suits the purpose. I'd like to see more of these (sticking with the basics to begin with), if we had enough I think they'd easily deserve a seperate section on TWHL.

Im gonna make a videotut too!

Loffe/kraken, what did you used to do the actual recording? Camtasia?
The Mad Carrot The Mad CarrotMad Carrot

Loffe used CamStudio.

Rofl, thats just like Camtasia!
But free software beats commercial software in this case, so im going to use CamStudio for all my screenrecordings from now on.
Thanks, potatis. :)

But for some strange reason i can't figure out, that FLV encoding program doesn't seem to load correctly. All i get is an interface that looks unfinished or hasn't fully loaded yet. Look:

http://www.themightyatom.nl/screenshots/flv_encoder_borked.jpg

This is the free 30 day trial version from http://www.rivavx.com/index.php?downloads0&L=3.

What could be the problem?

Riva's FLV Converter is generally better than those free "convert anything"-programs (that are usually shareware). It allows better compression and more options.

If you got the 30-day trial version, that's Riva Producer. You only need the freeware encoder.

For those of you who own Flash (CS2 or later, IIRC), there's the FLV Encoder that comes with that. Supposedly (haven't tried it) it's superior to any other alternatives.

Loffe, what are you're Riva FLV Encoder settings and what was your screenresolution at the time of the recording?
The Mad Carrot The Mad CarrotMad Carrot
Posted 15 years ago2008-06-03 15:09:52 UTC Post #250878
When recording I was running at my usual 1280x960 - however, the region was fixed at a (rather random) 992x744 to save size.

These were the settings iirc. I tested a few different ones, not that much difference.

In CamStudio, I was recording to Microsoft Video, not XviD. The quality difference was quite a bit.

The quality's alright, but the framerate seems a bit low? Maybe try 30?
And I want to hear some narration!
