Like some of you might already know, there is currently a resurgence of on the internet involving these 3D chat websites similar to Second Life. Just to name a few, there's Google Lively, Activeworlds, Outerworlds, Cybertown, 3DXplorer and a whole bunch more, and of course including my very own VirtualHL.info Now, one of the very latest 3D chat platform websites to recently debut is called "Exit Reality" (www.exitreality.com). But unlike all the other ones, this one has a very unique feature where any regular 2D website, and I really mean any website, can be turned in to a full blown 3D website, with multi-user chat with 3D avatars to boot!!! Of course, you would need to download and install a little browser plug-in so you can participate in the Exit Reality 3D network. A word of warning: Exit Reality is still in Beta, so there's bound to still be a few bugs in the system, but nothing big. So as to give you guys here at TWHL an idea on what a 2D website will look like turned 3D, I went ahead and tested TWHL to see what we would get, and here it is:

First, I input TWHL's full URL on to Exit Reality's 3D form:

Oh, in case you are wondering, all the website's links remain active in the 3D version, so all those floating words and sentences you see in 3D are clickable. Now, I really want to know what kind of mojo-jojo web technology is being employed here to pull this off! Does any body here have any clues?

Because it can be done? At best, it's an interesting gimmick showcasing where web technology can go.

The same with me too. But also, don't forget about the 3D chat aspect of it, something not part of the normal 2D TWHL.

I can't believe anyone would want a website in so-called "3D", or a 3D chat thing. The combination of both results in a truckload of DO NOT WANT.

Websites and internet chats should be 2D. Why? Because they are much easier and faster to use if they are 2D.
3D chats suck, even more than Ask Jeeves and Big Rigs.

Complete noobshit? Look at Tito?.......Try looking more at TheGrimReafer's recent news post, particularly the part on forum etiquette.

That's strange, I just visited your blog website in 3D and was able to roam freely everywhere, no force field. It's possible your avatar got stuck or something. When this happens, just click anywhere on the floor, and try moving again.
put that in hammer and make a map
Hehehe....That thought did cross my mind. Hey Rimrook, why don't you see how your website would look in 3D and post a picture here. Oh by the way, remember how I have your Sunden map on my VirtualHL website as a VRML chat world? Well, I went ahead and tested Sunden's full VRML world address, and to my surprise, it did load up on Exit Reality's 3D chat engine! Here's a picture of it, notice the Exit Reality's controls on the bottom of the screen:

Well, it's official then, apparently this idea on any website being turned in to 3D is not exactly getting a warm reception here at TWHL, oh well. This is pretty much like everything else in life, you either like it or you don't, simple as that. For the record, Exit Reality's membership growth has taken of like a rocket, it's already bigger than Google's Lively, according to their news board. I wonder if some day it will ever reach Second Life's massive million plus membership.

Since where're in the subject of 3D chat, I wonder how many of you here that are PS3 owners will be signing up for "Home" when it comes out. I hear that Home is supposed to "blow everything else" out of the water when it makes it's debut.

PlayStation Home (also marketed and referred to simply as Home)[3] is a community-based service for the PlayStation Network which has been in development since early 2005. Home allows users to create an avatar for their PlayStation 3 console. This avatar will get their own virtual apartment space, which can then be adorned with items users can receive in several different ways. In the future the service will also expand, allowing players to have more sorts of clothing or bigger apartments. Sony wants to give people the tools to create their own things, but they also want a safe place for younger users to feel comfortable.

Sony are desperate, because they're failing hard with the PS3. Not even a lame Second Life clone will save them.

I can't see the appeal of these "3D chat" things. Either play a real MMO (where you do things besides talk) or join an IRC channel.

Well, perhaps Sony is having second thoughts about Home, after all, how many times has Home been delayed now? If I was in charge of Sony, I would order a rebuild of Home, it will still be a 3D chat platform, but it will also have a built in first person shooter game engine. This way, when you are done chatting, you can go to some other "FPS area" and settle the score with a good'ole fashion fragfest. Afterwards, you can go back to chatting to taunt your victims.

While you won't catch me on any of these sites this is the future. I don't blame you guyz for not wanting to use it as it is a rather daunting and time-consuming task but think of what will happen in the future. If we want to go online all we have to do is sit in a special chair and the chip implanted in our brain will transfer our mind into the internet. Making the entire interent a 3D world much like our world that we can fly around visiting various online shops. It'll happen one day.

I do agree with you on everything you said about Sony. Now, according to what Sony said on the last E3, Home represents that one big "killer app" that the PS3 needs to help push it pass Microsoft's Xbox360 and it's hyper popular Xbox Live network. This is coming from Sony themselves, not me.

On a related note, I found this short video on YouTube showcasing 50 of the top 3D chat sites out there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CijdlYOSPc
On that video, it is claimed that there are about 300,000,000 registered 3D chat users world wide!

I think you hit it right on the nail with that one, aaron_da_killa. It might not be useful or practical, but it still can be interesting to check out.
