i dont have the original hl, only the hl on steam, how would i go about making my own mod, if thats even possible? i have experience modding with hl, but that was back before my computer crashed/wiped; and i cant find my hl disk.

It works the same way as far as I know. However I'm speaking from a strictly WON modder point of view. The folders are laid out the same way as the original, the only real difference is getting it onto the Steam Games list and creating the menu screen.

Download a Steam HL mod and check the files to see how it all works.

uh, yah i tried that. there not the same at all, theres no liblist in hl; all the folders are different- only a few dll's in common, and from my knowledge there is no way to get to a mod without have a .exe file.

but prove me wrong if you can, or hook me up with a tutorial; id really appreciate it. its been awhile since iv made a mod at all.

All HL data is stored in half-life.gcf or something. You can open it with ...scape (... = gfc!?)

raver, can you elaborate? "you can open it with...scape (....=gfc!?)"? appreciate the help.

Yeah, you can mod fine with only Steam. I was doing it for quite a while myself. Works the same way as it used to with WON, just that all the files and folders are stored in the GCF.

What Raver means is, you open the GCF file with GCFScape, but he couldn't remember the name or something...

GCFscape is an explorer which can open .gcf (game cache files) which is what steam games store their local content in.

These are, however, completely unneccesary for a mod.

When i was making Hostage Situation, i just copied my mod folder from my WONHL folder into my SteamHL folder and it worked fine. liblist still works, although there is indeed another method of doing it too.

Hunter, he doesn't even have WON Half-Life... so GCFScape is in fact necessary for him to extract all the necessary files and such.

But yeah, the files are essentially all the same, so if you have that option it'll work fine too.
