We choose 1 or more source maps, and 1 or more goldsource maps, and everyone "take them home" to compile and report your compile times/system specs, all with the same compile settings, compiler, etc of course.

Might be fun to see how your computer ranks... we could list member name and computer specs and compile time, etc...

We also might just use 1 big map from each engine, or 1 small, medium, and large one from each to get more interesting info... i dunno, what do you think?

Sounds interesting.

I'll support it!

I'd do it if someone packed up everything needed and put in a batch file to do it automatically :P

What compiler did you have in mind?
I'd be in for the Goldsrc part.

Heh, I'd be interested to see how well my new parts do when they arrive.

Unless I lose harder than you.

I'll do that ! But I'm only in for goldsource .
What map are we going to use for benchmarking ? I know ! My de_dome rmf =))

[EDIT] I need a rmf , and I need to know default hl steam path . .

I'll make a batch file for steam and one for WON hl ....

The only issue is that you have to open this batch file ( right click -> edit) and in the marked spots you have to replace with your own names .

Yah, so we put the bat file in the half-life directory.

The following batch file should do the trick, when put in the same folder as your compile tools. Just drag a .map file onto it to compile it. Doesn't matter where the .map file is located.
"%~dp0hlcsg.exe" "%~dpn1"
"%~dp0hlbsp.exe" "%~dpn1"
"%~dp0hlvis.exe" "%~dpn1"
"%~dp0hlrad.exe" "%~dpn1"
If you're only benchmarking compile times, then there's no need to know about the Half-Life folders at all, only the compile tools and the .map file matter.

What about the wad files then? Almost everyone has their wad files in their game directory, right?

As far as I know, that's not important as long as you don't include them in the map. At least, a quick test with the above batch file worked fine for me.

k so i guess the distribution should include something like:

goldsource
-Compile tools (so we all use the same version)
batch script from captain p (plus decide on compile switches for vis and rad)
A map and wads i guess if we need them?

source
i really don't know since i'm pretty new to source. afaik everyone
uses the standard tools and compiler, or can you use batch scripts for source too? Just pick a map or maps and we should be good? (somebody who maps for source a lot should pick...)

why not, sounds like a good idea, what do we use to compile them though, Hammer? Batch Compiler or Muzzles Compilater (mispelled, sorry)
Posted 15 years ago2008-10-27 21:58:18 UTC Post #257793
we could just use the batch script capt p mentioned. For Source, i guess we would just use the hammer compiler and standard tools? (sorry i haven't posted in so long, i've been too busy to even check my email, seriously--my account is probably suspended from nonuse i'm not joking)

I'll have some free time tomorrow, i'll try to setup a goldsource package then, if any of u-all are still interested.
