Check out Mistake, a singleplayer horror mod for Half-Life.

Author's note:

"This mod will let us into a horroristic world in the Andrew Parker asylum and we will live through (or not) in the view of a mental patient. The mod?s primal object is not the insane bloodbath. The real object is to escape from the huge building which holds a lot of secrets."

Features:
  • New textures
  • New sounds
  • New HUD
  • New maps
  • New menu
  • Changed and new models
  • Bumpmapping!
DOWNLOAD MIRROR 1

I only just started playing and im already pretty spooked.
Give it a try.
For the best gameplay experience, play at night, with lights off.

"What is that noise..."

OK this game frightened me that much I'll sleep with the lights on this night .
There are creatures you have never seen in other games . I think the guy who created this game is nuts and crazy . But the game is so cool .
Dude I tell you : this game rockets you off the chair . Just turn the lights off .

[EDIT] I completed it . Pretty short for such a modification .
I'll spoil a simple thing : don't waste you're time breaking crates . I broke them all and you won't find nothing .
Secondly : After the fourth map , begin to save frequently .

Striker, methinks you need to give Afraid of Monsters a try if you were jumping out of your chair for this one.

I'll download it later, when its dark, like everyone else :) . From the screenshots, the Silent Hill inspiration couldn't be more obvious. Though it looks awfully "pitch black". This better not be a bunch of cheap scares.

If you talk about silent hill you talk about cheap scares. SH is pretty boring to me, lets find out if this game can scare the crap out of me ..

All horror games/movies are cheap scares. Horror is lame.

I don't think you understand what is generally considered a "cheap scare", Raver.
Something scary that jumps out at you for no reason is a cheap scare.
SH never resorts to that. Its all in the atmosphere making you feel vulnerable.

Half the time they just use sounds and when you wait nothing actually happens. Although in SH 4 I loved how they actualy did have an enemy appear if you waited around. If you stayed in one area too long a ghost would come out of the wall :D Those things messed with my mind.

A lot of horror games are fun, some for the scares, most for the cheese factor. 99% of horror movies blow chunks, though, especially when they're based on video games.

See: Resident Evil trilogy, Silent Hill movie.

The only game that I actually liked for its scare factor was doom 3, after I got a random demon appearance mod.

Ok, so maybe not quite the "scare" factor as much as the surprise factor, but it made my nerves tingle and made me alert, and made me jump a few times.

Games or movies with too much ghosts, too much zombies, too much monsters, and cheesy atmosphere make me angry.

It has to be believable to be scary.

Edit: And striker, are you really that scared from this mod? Really? Cmon man.

I thought you will conclude from my posts that this game is really fun . I can't wait for other mods like this to be released . The fact that I was frightened and my soul jumped several times means this game actualy has an effect on a normal player .
Muzzleflash , believe me or not , when an athmosphere like this is pretty realistic and succesfully done I begin to forget those are just polygons made in hammer .

Somebody said something about the lighting . THe lighting makes the athmosphere for this game . Also , the proportion of monsters is just the best for this type of mod . You won't find lots of monsters because this mod tries to make the situation as realistic as possible . In reality monsters aren't scattered randomly around ...

I'm going to post this mod on my blog . I was really impressed .

Resident Evil 4 is the only horror themed game/movie I've enjoyed. Unless you count Final Destination, which I think is more comedy than horror.

I cracked up at some of the deaths. Like the teacher, and the guy who got hit by a sign at the end. Hilarious.

talking about final destination, i found final destination 2 quite disturbing. i stopped watching it when the glass wall fell ontop of that boy and gibbed him... that was really disturbing.

Finished without dying once. Had some nice ideas, some WTF moments, but never really made me jump.

Not a bad mod in the end.
