Has anyone heard of this little freeware called Paint.NET?

I am thinking about giving it a try.

It and Gimpshop are pretty decent freeware alternatives to Photoshop.

Vista comes with the NET framework built-in, correct?

Paint.NET is awesome, and yes, Vista comes with the .NET framework.

I prefer GIMP.

I tried out Paint.NET

It's such a nice program. It does everything that most people want (including myself), yet it is not bloated like many other graphics editors.

It comes with a 64-bit version, and it works well with Vista. For me, there is no delay whatsoever when I load the program, and all the operations are done in the blink of an eye.

I love it!

Yeah it's a very nice start for novices. But for intermediate ones like me, GIMP is much better.
I remember there is one more program like PAINT.NET but far more advanced at the chapter BRUSH ...

It's called Artweaver ( if I remember correctly) . That program is good for artists.

Me too. It just feels right when I load up PS and use that magic wand on my face.

But how fast does PhotoShop load up?

Paint.NET loads instantly.

Besides, it does everything that I want to do. I think PS is just too bloated.

It's the same reason why I use Chrome instead of IE.

Do you really care that much about loading time? I don't mind waiting a few seconds (because that's what we're talking about here) extra. On my never defragged and generally slow stationary computer, PS loads in around 6 seconds. You might have saved those seconds, but what are you gonna do with that amount of time? :P

If you're gonna compare the two, compare the features instead.

Legitimate copies of Photoshop are generally priced around $500(or more ? don't now really)

GimpShop - Free
Gimp - Free
Paint.Net - Free
Artweaver - Free

Paint.Net = the beginner-intermediate transition for a user

Artweaver = almost the same as above only a little more advanced

Gimp,GimpShop= advanced users

Photosop = Expert users.

This is my opinion, but GimpShop is for expert users too I guess. And it's totally free.

Free.$500 ?

What do I choose ?

You guessed it, I use photoshop too ! :biggrin:

But really I love to test and work with open-source programs or free programs. It's so much fun for me !

I mainly use the CS3 series of tools, nicely streamlined and easy to integrate in the workflow whilst using tools as 3dsm.

I do have those other freeware programs installed, and i can say there pretty decent.

Artrage 2 is also pretty nice to have something that resembles sketching on the computer.

Hmm...I'll check out Artrage 2.

Hmmm.... something like artweaver, but the artweaver brush painting is extremely developed. And this program does cost . The free version doesn't enchant me.
