Pfff, so much for this being a 'modding community that is happy to help newbies'

Now i dont know about YOU guys, but im so sick of seeing the new members on here getting pushed around. i mean really, some of you guys think you're so shit hot.

Infact, im so supprised how much Yodalman (for instance) keeps getting back on his own two feet after taking insult after insult.
Now this just isnt fair.

keeps getting back on his own two feet after taking insult after insult.
Some people just seem to be better at it than others.

I generally try to stay in the blurry blindspot of these issues by helping newbies if I can, and ignoring the everloving style out of them if I can't.

btw, where/who did you get 'modding community that is happy to help newbies' from? Did anyone ever say that?...

yes, yes people have said this is the best place for HL modding help not only is there a variety of tutorials but the best source for help on here is from its members...
aparently
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-06 05:10:36 UTC Post #265081
What new members are getting pushed around other than Yodalman?
And Yodalman isn't even new. He's been here for a long time under different names because of past bans.

All the newbies report to the help forums because they have mapping problems because that's where the newbies report to. I don't see anyone being ridiculed there.
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-06 05:11:29 UTC Post #265084
I agree. I have only ever made un-useful comments when someone is being especially useless and making foul comments. Please point out examples to strengthen your statement...
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-06 05:19:40 UTC Post #265085
NineTnine, Yodalman has been around longer than you think, this is in fact I think his.. 3rd (?) user on TWHL. The question you should be asking is why we actually keep giving him a chance. The only modding work I have seen him do is illegal, so users won't support him, and every other second he's trolling.

We're generally very accepting towards newcomers, you just don't realise some people don't deserve acceptance.

You could always open a forum section designed for the inexperienced and the new. A place for those forums that need a little extra love and respect and newbiness would be expected.

I've seen a few forums like it before. Its just a suggestion :/

That's not a bad idea, I guess. Basically the forum equivalent of the "Where to start?" page. In the very least I there should be something easily accessible and advertised on sign-up for newbies to look at before diving into the forums.

And only approved (being helpful and reasonable sane and mature acting people) may reply to the threads. That wont work with this version of TWHL but maybe the next one???

Not going to work that way.

Really. New users are being pushed around? :zomg:

YOU'RE RIGHT!! How did I not notice!? Jesus, you'd think this was the Internet or something! :rly:

In all seriousness though, people who join the forum and go "Help me mAKE MY MOd. I've opund Hammer now what? ZOMG I SKURD." are really not worth the effort. Its a learning process after all.

Also, as stated already by the Admins, using Yodalman as your example? Either you really don't know a tool when you see one, or you a friend of his or something. :\

This is a bad idea. It's essentially picking favorites, and that's never a good thing.

Then maybe some ranks would be useful.

Hmm, didn't think of it that way. you're right WC, wouldn't work...
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-06 13:40:20 UTC Post #265115
That seems rather oxy-moronic to have a rank or approval system required for the newcomer forums...

Although I could see a dozen forums starting up that would be simple like:

Newb: Where's the ketchup?
Strider: Bottom shelf of the fridge next to the Chardonnay.
Newb: kthx
Thread dead

But since many are getting into Source and there is marginally less source tutorials, I think it'd be appropriate.

If we weren't so hard on noobs than how will they learn?

It's called strength training.

Telling them their map is awesome because it's a box with a garg in it is counter beneficial.

They don't know how to use the search function to solve their own issues? We flame them. It's called learning.

Besides, I am hot shit.

Actually, teaching is a balance between hard and soft.

Like encourage and promote that they are learning, and praise that they made a cube and compiled it. That's better than what you were before that.

Then encourage development, increased standards, challenges, and meeting expectations. But never discourage, that just makes you look like a douche-bag.

Tis the ways of TWHL. You start off as the newcomer and get insulted because you type appallingly and annoy people. But you soon develop into a butterfly that is loved by all. Especially Chow.

Bonus points to anyone who knows who Chow was/is.

You know... the original topic wasn't really a healthy debate. It wasn't a debate at all-- more of an observation.

Well, we've had some pretty bad cases in the past, many of which I was involved in. I remember some guys who could barely type English and made no sense at all, and everyone would just jump on the bandwagon and start mocking them. That was kind of cold-hearted, but there wasn't much else that could be done, so we made light of it. To be honest NineTnine, I'm not even sure why you're mentioning this. It's not much of an issue right now at all, and it's already been said that Yodalman is anything but green here on TWHL. Care to provide any other examples?
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-06 21:05:44 UTC Post #265135

Posted 15 years ago2009-04-06 22:31:17 UTC Post #265138
And THWL is not an isolated case. It is simply the internet's way. Newcomers are simply mocked because certain users become bloated and too big for their britches or the other users that are community latchers (ie, only talk in forums for the sake of it) (No offense Yodalman...) Newbies will become one of the following:

1. Big Bossy Boots who flame/flame/flame/swear/flame/banned
2. Chuck a sissy fit from said abuse and leave
3. Hang around and latch onto forums
4. Become good users that either make infrequent appearances OR are generally quiet except in self-related or help topics

(note that these are for NEW users, some, like our admins, become well respected (by most anyway))

"You start off as the newcomer and get insulted because you type appallingly and annoy people. But you soon develop into a butterfly that is loved by all."

i find it hard to belive that we/they/you/whoever has to go through the obsticals of being insulted and flammed or whatever JUST to be accepted
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-07 02:27:18 UTC Post #265156
You only get insulted and flamed if you come in here with the attitude that deserves it. We occasionally get the idiot newbie that has their mind set on something that either can't be done, or shouldn't be done (HL2 to HL1 porting, for instance) and when they're told they can't, they rant and rave.

On the other end, I remember quite a few polite newcomers who have been given warm welcomes and respect because they have the right attitudes.

Sometimes it boils down to their age, too. It's the nature of most young kids to be shitheads.

In short: people who deserve it, get it. People who don't, do not.

They don't HAVE to, but most of them choose to anyways.

You make it sound like there's some hazing conspiracy happening at TWHL. There are lots of good threads for every bad one, it's really not that big a deal.
Sometimes it boils down to their age, too. It's the nature of most young kids to be shitheads.
I believe this to be a large factor.
Posted 15 years ago2009-04-07 02:46:50 UTC Post #265159
im not saying there is a big conspiracy at all...

im just saying older members should cut the new ones some slack.

However.

Strider has a made a fair enough point though, so im finished with this discussion

btw, ranks wouldnt never ever work, 1 because they are already defined here and 2 there should only be the admin(s) and the members. i strongly think TWHL should be a communist website.

Thats a good point though there satch. I mean look at a few of our new users. fold, discostu and that other one tech-somethin, sorry, i struggle with new names, They all came here with very polite and appreciative attitudes and while their hello threads turned into weird spam discussions they were happy ones and no-body got insulted. Even better, the new user actually got into the discussion and melded with our discussions like they have been users for long time...
