The swine flu has already succeeded in causing wide-spread panic.

I am working the urgent care tonight, and we were mobbed by patients.

Everyone with the slightest cold came in to get checked out.

This is exactly the way everyone is going to get sick, waiting in a crowded waiting room full of sick people.

I guess I'm lucky I don't consume that much pork. I'm not worried actually. But I got a flu anyway, I guess it's the time of the year.

WHAT!!!......You still here??

Aren't you supposed to be in Mexico now as part of a W.H.O. biohazard containment medical team?

Ha!....just kidding there, satchmo. I am sure the last place you want to be in right know, is in Mexico. Just when you thought their drug cartels bloody turf wars were bad enough, now the Mexicans have to deal with their country being ground cero for the next world pandemic! Oh, on top of all that, I just heard that they got hit with a strong earthquake this morning!

But of course, this swine flu has gone global now, so it's really everybody's problem now. Let's just all hope for the best....
I guess I'm lucky I don't consume that much pork.
What I hear, is that you can not get this flu by eating well cooked pork.

Always amazed me that we put sick people in a room filled with sick people, almost as if one would want to have them dead. Best way to get a cocktail with viruses is sitting in the doc's waiting room.

Last I heard there are three people waiting test results for Swine Flu down here, and hospital staff are obviously expecting chaos, positive results or not. Can't really blame people though, you get cold symptoms and there just happens to be a flu strain on the loose with 150 reported deaths... I'd panic too.

OH SHI- SOME GUYS CAUGHT THE FLU LOL IT'S REALLY NEWSWORTHY.

Sensationalism. There's nothing to be even remotely worried about, and if you're even remotely concerned I really feel pity for you. The only people who should even care are the doctors who have to put up with the thousands of idiots who think they need vaccines.

Let me ask you a little question m0p: Did you even bother watching at least a bit of TV news, or at least read a recent news article on any news related website? I am sorry to say this, but you are WAY off on your assessment on this.

Here's a recent quote posted by a major news site:
Mexico, where the number of deaths believed caused by swine flu rose by 50 percent on Monday to 152, is suspected to be ground zero of the outbreak. But Mexican Health Secretary Jose Angel Cordova late Monday said no one knows where the outbreak began, and implied it may have started in the U.S.
Now, does that sound like "nothing to be even remotely worried about", since especially now this same flu is making it's round around the world?

Here, I will do you a favor and give you a link to a news site that gets updated to the minute on the latest news on this flu outbreak: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,518196,00.html
Hopefully this report will enlighten you more clearly to the real state of things.

@m0p: Well yeah, I'll definitely agree that the media has vastly exaggerated the whole thing. But the fact is it's a new strain of flu no one's been immunized for that's primarily been affecting young, healthy people. Obviously it's not going to be THE END OF THE HUMAN RACE AS WE KNOW IT OMGGGGGGGGGGG but that doesn't mean you should completely dismiss it.

@Tito: I'd actually advise against paying attention to the majority of TV/news outlets concerning things like this. And linking to FOX news doesn't really help your argument much, lawl. The first two paragraphs of that article (which are all I could really stand to read) are so over-dramatized it makes me cringe. The best source for news on this is probably the CDC's page.

I totally agree with m0p. This is just the same shit, like with the bird flu four years ago, and all the similar shit pumped out by the media the years before that.

I remember, they were scaring off everyone, by saying, that if not by the end of 2005, by the beginning of 2006, bird flu is gonna become a worldwide epidemic. And then - you'll be fucked.

Bullshit.

Oh yeah, like Caboose said, I wouldn't pay too much attention to the mainstream media. They just want to stir shit up to have the viewers attention. Also - although I'm not sure, that this is true - some guys at 4chan hacked CNN's server and uploaded fake information about the flu, which they didn't recognize for several hours. That's how much they can be trusted.

The Swine flu apocalypse is total bullshit, so the fuck what if it killed 150 people? On a global scale that is a VERY small number, in fact, it's nothing.

Some people need to know when to turn off the news.
Posted 14 years ago2009-04-28 12:41:43 UTC Post #266094
The difference between swine and bird flu is the latter is transmitted almost entirely from contact between a person and bird, while swine flu's been confirmed to be transmitting purely through human-to-human contact.
Posted 14 years ago2009-04-28 14:00:45 UTC Post #266099
Caboose is correct.

When the new strain of flu virus mutates so it's communicable between people, shit hits the fan.

That's what's going on now.

Of course, a pandemic might not materialize despite this new strain, but it has the potential of doing so.

The last flu pandemic occurred in 1918, and 40 million people died from that.

Things are not bad now, but I could get a lot worse.

I pray for all of us that the pandemic can be avoided.

It almost seems like people want to find an excuse just to panic over it. SARS, bird flu, swine flu, global warming cough and so on. You're far more likely to die on the drive to work, and you don't see people panicking over that.

Here's the latest from the Associated Press wire:
At least seven people were in U.S. hospitals with swine flu Tuesday as the number of cases nationwide rose to 64 and a federal health official warned that deaths were likely.

Most of the nation's confirmed cases were in New York, where the city health commissioner said "many hundreds" of schoolchildren were ill at a school where several students had confirmed cases of swine flu.

Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that although ordinary human flu accounts for 36,000 deaths every year, he was concerned by this strain.

"I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," Besser said at an Atlanta news conference.
Not looking good, is it?

The traffic through the hospital and clinics has tripled this week due to the mass panic generated by the swine flu. Even though there has not been a single case reported where I work, parents are still scared shitless.

Well, there's the first confirmed swine flu death outside of Mexico. It's in the United States, state of Texas, which of course borders Mexico, so it's not surprising. According to news reports, it was a toddler who died in Texas.

EDIT: The World Health Organization said the outbreak is moving closer to becoming a full-scale pandemic. Dr. Keiji Fukuda, the organization's top flu expert, told reporters in Geneva that the latest developments are moving the agency closer to raising its pandemic alert to phase 5, indicating widespread human-to-human transmission. That's just one step below level 6, a full-fledged pandemic.

Hmm... There were a few confirmed cases in my neighboring towns.
I'm not worried. I just got myself a small bottle of hand sanitizer, and just started washing my hands a lot.
I'm not worried. We have good medicine.
AFAIK there have been no confirmed deaths in USA due to our medicines. So i really don't need to worry.
But i can still be cautious.

Satch, are there any symptoms, other than having a cold, that are related to the swine flu?

Shit, then I'm considering myself a scared rat.
I live in Romania, that's far away from there, but I'm still worried. Worried because of the chicken flu that was present in the past years. And the first case in Germania of swine flu was reported yesterday, I guess.

And maybe until autumn there will be no kind of vaccine for this type of flu.

I already told my mom to stop buying pork meat, anyway the summer is almost here, so we switched to a more healthy diet ( salads, fish and things like these).

It's interesting though that this family escaped the swine flu : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT2HWdPFqMg

OKAY!! Im going to say this once and not come back to this thread because the topic is beginning to annoy me. Swine flu is basically a new strain of Influenza A. Yes it came from swine but it had to come from bloody somewhere!! Many people in Mexico would die from such a flu because they often DONT have access to good health care everywhere and because of this they do not have the immune systems we do because we live in grotty modern livings. So far, all the people OUTSIDE mexico who have died are either the very young or those suffering health problems. Yes, this may become a pandemic but its a flu. We get them often and healthy eating with some good old codral and youll be fine.

Holy shit! 1.86 cm.

My little pinkie finger is taller than you.

I tell patients to look for three things--high fever (higher than 39 C or 102 F), severe cough or difficulty breathing, and extreme lethargy.

If you have those symptoms and have had direct contact with another person who has been confirmed by a certified laboratory to have the swine flu, you should get tested yourself.

But otherwise, you shouldn't worry.

The swine flu isn't just a new strain of the flu. Since no living person has any immunity against this strain, it is a lot more deadly for otherwise healthy young people.

The typical new strain of the flu that comes around every winter usually doesn't pose a threat to healthy people, but only to really old folks and babies.

That's the main distinction.

This isn't the same strain of flu that killed 40 million people. The death count thus far isn't exactly high considering the number of suspected infections. I doubt the cause for the deaths so far (which are relatively low for a disease that the the uneducated masses are billing as "dangerous") is cytokine storms, which is what most people generally regard as being responsible for most Spanish flu deaths. Not to mention that back then healthcare wasn't nearly as good and treatments weren't as effective or as widely availible in those days.

Also notice how there has been a single death outside Mexico so far (that we know of), perhaps their healthcare just plain sucks or there's some other factor that nobody has considered? Really there's nothing to be worried about at all, in my opinion. The panic is far more harmful than the disease.
