Here's a juicy rumor: could Microsoft be working on a portable gadget that combines the Xbox 360 with the Zune? Maybe....
User posted image
The project, codenamed "xYz," is said to feature a WVGA touch screen and a way to play music and movies on both the device as well as the Xbox 360. Basically, it's going to be a connected handheld gaming system with rich multimedia features. Supposedly it will be powered by a special version of NVIDIA's Tegra "computer-on-a-chip".

This mobile platform is the first one to offer HD-video output via a HDMI connector and the visual power of a GeForce GPU in the palm of your hand. The following video will show you how much power we?re talking here:

Will the xYz system actually come to exist? Time will tell. There is a whole lot more to this new Microsoft handheld that you have not heard yet, so for the full report and another video, go here:

Wow, I didn't realize anybody cared about the Zune anymore. What a lame product that was.

I'm not sure Microsoft could compete this way. If Sony can't even barely hold it together with the PSP, I don't expect Microsoft could do much better by combining a failed iPod competitor with some fancy graphics.

Oh lord. Microsoft should just drop every project they have and focus on two things:

1) A decent Windows (though I hear good things about 7).

2) Rid us of RROD's. Can't believe they're still around.

If this ever came around you just know it'd be a multimedia DRM nightmare.

Xbox button in the middle of the D-pad... I see myself hitting that accidentally every 3 minutes.

I don't think that's a button, but it doesn't matter because it's just some basement dweller's idea of what it could look like.

Insert joke about portable RROD here

Let me guess. All that and 2 hrs of battery life.

The Zune had a rough start, but with the newer and improved models coming out, it is still hanging in there. The Zune might never match the iPod's success in our life times, but at least it is selling better than Sony's best MP4 players. But personally, I still prefer the iPod.

Now, can anybody here really say truthfully that they would not be enticed on a new handheld with the power of a high end gaming laptop, and according to the teamxbox site, sell for only $200? Remember that the PSP sold for $299 when it first came out.

And another thing, since this xYz handheld is a Microsoft product, it will most likely run on some version of Windows, and with it being powered by a NVIDIA GeForce graphics chip, well....the possibilities of it being also able to play a regular PC game, are at least in theory, plausible.
Let me guess. All that and 2 hrs of battery life.
Most of the battery juice will be sucked by the GPU. And according to the GPU maker NVIDIA, "over 100 hours audio and 10 hours HD video playback".

That is indeed 2 hours. Battery makers cannot believed for there numbers. They even have admitted themselves that these battery's only could possibly with the tinys chance have that kind of performance under the best of the best conditions. As a RC modelbuilder i know you always need to take the given batterylife with a dozen grains of salt.

Nintendo rule the handheld console market. The sooner other companies realise that the sooner we can get all this extra bullshit off the shelves.

I actually got far better-than-advertised performance out of my rechargeable AA camera batteries. Strange that.

Yeah, you're right. And I guess since Microsoft currently dominates the operating system market everyone else should just give up trying to create a better OS, right? As much as I love my DS, competition is always a good thing.

I dont have time for portable gaming anymore. The only times i used to play was on the bus or in a study hall. since i drive and go to college, my DS has been collecting dust. Plus i got my computer, wii and a crap-ton of roms i can just mess with whenever i want.

But i guess playing gears of war wherever the hell i want would be pretty sick

And i liked the zune.

It's debatable, but some say the DS and Wii aren't even in the same market segment as the rest of the consoles. Nintendo's playing a totally different game with their products, and they don't really have much competition for what they're offering. Really, when was the last time you considered Nintendo's current lineup a contender for the "serious gaming" crowd?

If the DS was the only handheld left on the market, quality wouldn't decrease for anything. Nintendo would still be building a great product and developers would simply be competing on a single platform instead of having a hodge-podge of choices. Nobody complained back when the Game Boy was a loner.

Yeah, with all that power that requires a lot of electric energy, Microsoft would have to build an integrated mini-v6 gasoline engine. Feel the power !
