What's the biggest game ever? According to Guinness World Records, it's upcoming racing game Fuel, which boasts a record-breaking 5,500 square miles of accessible, in-game terrain.
User posted image
That's larger than many perfectly good countries, including Jamaica, The Gambia, and Lebanon. It'll take you three hours to drive from one side to the other, and on your way you'll pass through 19 different environmental regions offering terrain types as diverse as deserts, rivers, forests and mountains. The record was officially confirmed at the London offices of Guinness earlier this week.

It's also larger than enormous games like Fallout 3 (which replicates much of Washington, D.C. and its surrounding area), fantasy worlds like those of World of Warcraft and Oblivion, and the vast metropolises of the Grand Theft Auto series.

"We knew FUEL was going to be big," said the game's producer Phil Wright, of Codemasters, "but to have this confirmed officially by Guinness World Records justifies our faith in this ground-breaking title. No other game comes close to offering the variety of environments, the range of vehicles or the sheer size of FUEL. It?s one of the most innovative racers ever, and we?re thrilled it?s been recognized as the biggest console game of all time."

Also, you suck for copying your entire post off a news site. Not a single personal opinion in there.

What about The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall?
Daggerfall is the largest Elder Scrolls game to date, featuring a game world estimated as being 161,600 square kilometres (62,394 square miles or 40,400,000 acres) with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons for the player's character to explore

Point taken. I do admit after seeing this now, I could have presented this topic in a better way, as in just providing the source link to the story like I usually do anyway, instead of repeating it as I did with this one, sorry.

"Fuck you guys"?...That kind of broad bitterness to all is not good. As far as I know, I only did this once without posting a link back to the story's source by accident. Now, could some of my other threads should have been posted instead on the journal section? Perhaps, but then again, I think most of my threads so far are kind of in the "gray area", meaning they could go either way. Now, to be on the safe side from now on, I will refrain from doing any more of my unconventional threads on the forum, and if I do one, it will go on my journal.
Jesus. That's incredible...

What, don't you like racing games? Come on, there's got to be at least one you like!

I don't hate racing games, but the only thing you can do in them is drive around. It's disappointing if you have all that space and the only thing you can do with it is drive a car through it.

I agree with Rim, X3 go's above and beyond those games. And flightsimulator? A whole planet to explorer?
Posted 14 years ago2009-05-28 13:57:27 UTC Post #267586
well if we're talking mapped out satellite photos, than yeah I guess it's different than space-game stuff, cuz space is easy to make, but ground on earth is hard because it needs to be defined.

Ok... I crunched some numbers and this is what I got.

To rival it in source it would require 14,138.9 maps
To rival it in goldsource it would require 61,111.1 maps

LETS BEAT THE RECORD! :walter:

Even if ever map in the vault was a source map, we've only covered about 2056.25 miles of that!

Sure He,He,...Will Hammer be able to handle a map like that without crashing? Anyway, I think this is where cloud computing comes in, unless of course somebody here happens to have one of those IBM mainframe super computers.
but the only thing you can do in them is drive around.
Not all racing games are like that. Example: In the Need For Speed series, there's the cop chase mode, where you need to evade capture by the cops before you finish the race. My favorite are the earlier Rush games, where you have the option to take short cuts that lead to insane high jumps. On Rush 2049, there's a stunt mode set in a special stunt arena, and a deathmatch mode similar to the Twisted Metal games. Man I love this game, I have the Dreamcast version for it. One racing game I wish they brought back to the next gen systems, is Road Rash. I was really addicted to that game.

I suppose you never heard of Grand Turismo or Project Gotham Racing, two racing games that got multiple awards for level design and awesome graphics. The genre of the game has nothing to do with it's quality. It's who makes the games, and how good the creators are, period. Anyway, I suspect that since a video game has landed in the book of Guinness World Records for being the largest, the current "graphics competition" among developers will take a back seat to a new "map size competition". The Guinness book has the reputation of bringing out all the crazies out in the open every once in a while.

When you've got so much map to cover, of course the details are going to be lacking. It'd take a good chunk of dedication to make a detailed world that big.

Yea, I could be wrong. Or maybe nobody has got around on doing a good soccer game yet. Not one good soccer game? Are you sure about that?

On a related note: If anybody really want to see some truly massive 3D scenes, just check out some of the user made city models at: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/search?q=city&btnG=Search&styp=m

Of course, you will need Google Sketchup or some Collada file viewer installed on your PC to view the models.

All driving. When I said "all you can do is drive around", I mean you can't jump, climb, interact, or do anything else that would allow you to explore the finer intricacies of this massive world they give you. At least, not with the lack of control that comes with a vehicle.

Heh World Crafter has a point. I'll say two words and a number:

Far Cry 2. God, that was an awful game.

Posted 14 years ago2009-05-28 21:01:14 UTC Post #267603
Far Cry 2 is basically FPS GTA: Africa, and while even though I'm bored with that style of gameplay in general, to me it ranks much higher than Fallout 3's boring, glitch-ridden excuse for gameplay.

Otherwise I completely agree with WorldCrafter. Racing games are dull and uninventive. My brother had like 6 NFS games and a few other racers on his 360 (it bricked, he traded his games in), I couldn't understand why as they all played the same.

OK let invent a good racing game.

Each team has a bus full of hooligans and the point is to jump from bus to bus and fight/sabotage each other. First to the goal wins.

I saw one of those at a friend's once, can't remember which one. I've always wondered whether you would be able to go back to where you have been already, or just keep walking and wait for that place to reappear in the random generation sequence (that might take a while).
It'd take a good chunk of dedication to make a detailed world that big.
Yeah I can already picture it in the graphics detail of Castle Master!

Rimrook, I like your idea. Where do I sign up?

Right. But that's not the case with this Fuel racing game. The key here is, quote: "accessible, in-game terrain". What this means is, every square inch of the 5,500 square miles is actually explore able, no random generation of any kind.
Each team has a bus full of hooligans and the point is to jump from bus to bus and fight/sabotage each other. First to the goal wins.
That's sort of like Road Rash, but instead of using motorcycles, buses are used! Radical....

RoadBlasters and Spy Hunter were pwn racing games because you could shoot other cars.. Do they make any modern racing games where you get machine guns and powerups like those?

I remember having a lot of fun with RC Pro Am on the old 8-bit NES too, which is probably the last racing game i ever played...

Racing games just got old eventually, failing to bring anything new but better graphics.

As for Fuel, it looks fairly impressive graphically in the newer videos, however the earlier media showed otherwise. Can't say I'm too disappointed with it being a driving game - the large areas, etc. should make way for some interesting races.

I'm guessing it should take one hell of a computer to render areas that vast in realtime, so I'm guessing the requirements won't be too pleasing.

So yeah, I'll probably give this a try provided my PC can run it.
