I didn't say I won't go for the compo. Of course I took in consideration being a respected member or things like that if you get on the first place ... I jsut said my opinion !
But Luke pushes this too far. I know you don't agree with me, but explain it in a civilised way ! I will understand.
WHat you did is just making me argument more ....
ANd do you think I'm expecting big prises from a mapping competition ? WHat do you think I'm out of my mind ? NO. IT was a fucking opinion guys !

SOrry for the offtopic, don't respond me.

I can't add vents?... I made that top area huge and gameplay isn't going to be very flowable. Ill just make the vents but block them for the competition and than upload the map with them opened for deathmatch..

I'm making an underground laboratory, that "organic part" is gonna be a gigantic cave.

Now I just need to manually vertex-edit a few hundred triangles... I'll be back in a jiffy!
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-10 10:27:15 UTC Post #268166
I think ill go for a medieval castle like thing...and those white boxes in the top middle area are going to be little village huts of something...going to be sweet!!!
Describing things that need to be pointed at is hard eh?
Very...lol

Mine is a Hybrid map. Combines a lot of different themes.
I have all but 2 areas sketched out on paper, and i have the areas i sketched out Dev-textured.
I'm making another SP map so i'm going fo functionality first, then looks later.

Plus it'll be my first ever source SP map. so it'll be an intersting learning experience.

Provided you can't walk in those grey areas, I think the judges will agree that's fine.

Its fine I think. I turned that part into a cliff-like part too.
The extra organic part on the left should be fine too. Hell the whole map could be rocky organic type and it wouldn't matter as long as the accessible area was in the shape of the layout.

Although I did take the layout in literal sense, as in the negative space is mostly wall and such.

Nice work, Strider - and here I was, wondering how I was going to get the organic "coastline" shape into Hammer so I could follow it; I guess you've answered my question for me! :)

I think I shall give this a shot, if I find the time. Goldsource as usual for me, although I might try the new compile tools and see if they free me up a little... I've already got the basic floor plan blocked out (to scale, of course...) Hope I get to go further with it...
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-11 11:23:10 UTC Post #268196
Yeah how leinent are you with the 'organic' outline in that top part. It doesnt have to fit exact does it?
My guess says no but you guys did say you were going to be more strict this time around.

None of the layout needs to fit exact, you can change the outlines as much as you want.

We all Will. But i hope this is the first compo that i can just spend the last week optimizing instead of actually making it.
It always comes down to the last minute whether you start early or not.
Unless you have no life, or your name is doodle.
(I think last compo, doodle's map was in first WAY before everyone elses- if not, disregard that last part)

I'm probably entering

you're all screwed.
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-15 20:01:24 UTC Post #268285
Well, where exactly are the requirements?

Edit: never mind. Hadn't checked the front page.

Edit2:
You may blow proportions out of scale compared to the picture if you want, but the general floor plan has to be there.
Does this mean that I'm allowed to, say, make the curved hallway wider or narrower if I want to?

I agree with the awards idea who here has a paypal account, I think all members should donate like $3 and the winner in 1st place gets the money.

We can send our money to one of the judges.. if the person in first place does not have an (paypal) account, then tuff luck, the money will be used forthe next comp.

That would be a problem for any mappers not having their debit cards/cash in their paypal.
However, it would probably be quite interesting.

Do any admins have an account, I could donate some money..

I have an account, and I know Strider does, too.

No guarantees that any money received would go to compo winners though...

Honestly I think it's not going to work, considering the user base of the site and how much they may (or may not) have.

No account and no money. I could use the extra penny if I won, but I think it would throw out the spirit of the competition and make it just another "play for money" thing. I believe it's fine as it is now.
Posted 14 years ago2009-06-16 12:00:17 UTC Post #268305
True. When it comes to deciding who takes the pot, there would be a greater pressure on the judges as well.

Ok How about the winner gets a prize from me!
I swear it wont be a cheezy prize either.
Maybe a TWHL T-shirt or something.
Whoever wins, just send me the address and i'll mail it out.
Unless i win, then i'll buy myself a cake.

A TWHL T-shirt sounds pretty nice. I might actually try this competion just because of that. :P

I was thinking of entering anyway, I'm having visions of a map based off of the peragus mining facility in Star wars: KOTOR 2.

That organic looking part of the layout would make a nice mining tunnel.

I have a debit card, but have no paypal. Though probably I would proudly wear the TWHL T-Shirt every sunny day :D :P.

Whats your policy on dynamic changes in the layout ingame? The main two types I want to incorporate, are various types of rubble falling from the ceiling, if the player can still maneuver over this rubble, but perhaps more slowly, but still preserving the original layout, is that fine?

Second change, is I want to make it so that when, and explosive reaction is triggered in this one area, I want to make certain ares on fire, or superheated. I wont make them completely Impassable, just discouraging players from going there. (like those two block things in the organic area, I want those to be mining tunnels, but later in the game they could wind up getting superheated, thereby discouraging players from going in that dead-end area.
