Well, apparently it seems Google is planning to heat up the war against Microsoft by introducing a competing operating system. Just like their web browser they launch about nine months ago called Chrome, which by the way already has over 30 million users, the mighty Google is setting the stage to enter the operating system race with their own version called the "Chrome Operating System".

What are you running? Standard 32bit systems run 4GB just fine, I am right now...
64bit is for when you want 8GB, although I guess the Alienware "ALX X58" can run up to 24GB so... but it is an Alienware.

It's based on the Linux kernel, meaning that it will NOT run Windows applications, any better than Linux currently does.

Jumping the gun a little? It's basically another distro of Linux, much like Ubuntu. Nothing to see here.

32-bit XP supports maximum 4GB memory including video memory and any additional memory floating around, like integrated video cards, for example. Most installs of XP max out at around 3.5GB. 64-bit supports much more than 4GB, but Windows puts a limit on to make the user upgrade to a more expensive version to use more RAM. The hardware doesn't change anything, so the fact that a computer setup runs 24GB of RAM ultimately doesn't mean anything.

I think Google is the polar opposite of Microsoft. While MS wants to keep everything on the desktop, Google wants everything in the browser.

I think you say this because we're talking about google, but you wouldn't say that if some anonymous guys will release sometime in the future a "realistic option", you would say "not another operating system !".

Well...I can't be stuffed formatting my hard-drive and replacing any OS...so i'm happy with Vista Ultimate...Google will not win this one...no offence but Google had a hand in the internet way back and it got a good hand before Microsoft did. Microsoft basically own the entire OS market...the other OS survive simply because they are more useful for some aspects like business and such...Microsoft will trash google (no offence)

@ Penguin - Yeah i read it wrong. Any software developed for the Google OS will work on anything else. Not necessarily the other way around.

They're talking about web applications, which any OS can already run in the first place. I don't know how extreme it will be, but it seems as if Google is trying to remove desktop applications entirely. Which, of course, is problematic, especially since they're targeting netbooks, which might not always have an internet connection.

Google Video has to be the most useless service Google has ever conceived. At first I thought it was supposed to be another video sharing community like Youtube, but then Google attained Youtube and appear to have left Google Video to rot. Now it leaves me wondering why they don't just combine its content with Youtube somehow and discontinue it.

I am aware that I am just a Google fanboy, but I think I like Google for a reason (or many reasons).

Having a large market share currently really has no meaning. Just look at Wordperfect and Netscape. They used to dominate the word processing arena and the browser, respectively.

Where are they now?

Netscape got raped by IE because IE was packaged with windows. Then all the better 3rd party browers came out and are doing the same thing to IE. which is good because i can't stand IE.

As for wordperfect, i never heard of em.

Google Video has to be the most useless service Google has ever conceived.

Google Video is just one of many failures, most of them died at the experimental stage, or beta. One of the more visible failures they had some time ago, was their attempt at a 3D chat platform called "Lively", which you can read more about this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Lively

Another possible failure: Some industry experts are saying that Google's Android cell phone operating system can yet still fail as a viable alternative to Apple's iPhone, Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Blackberry, if it does not gain enough market share by the time 2010 rolls in, but that's something yet to be seen.
