Most of you here won't remember this, but back in the olden days there was once a version of Windows called 3.1. It was unstable, plain-looking, clunky, virtually feature free, and we liked it. Want to know what it was like without actually loading it up on a real PC? Just go to this website, and there it is in all (well, some of) its glory:

It's a clever creation by a programer called Michael Vincent, using JavaScript to let you operate a replica of Windows 3.1 that feels remarkably like the real thing. You can even fire up MS DOS and type in a few choice commands that actually work. Heck, it's even slow like computers were back then.

Back then, it didn't even run on Windows. Windows was a DOS app.

Not only that, Windows 3.1 came in the back then awesome and spacious 1.44MB 3.5" floppy disks. Man, those were the days!

I used 5 1/4" disks. And those were really "floppy" disks.

The 3.5" diskettes were actually rigid.

I used Windows 2.0 before upgrading to Windows 3.0

The oldest Windows I saw was Windows 95, and the first time I saw it was I think in 97' when I was 4. The last time I think I saw it was in 2002 at a friend who still had a 486 with 512 HDD.
I used Windows 98 from 99 to 2006.

Oh damn, that's right.....I forgot all about the 5 1/4" disks! If I remember correctly, they were around before the 3.5" diskettes were. And yes, you are right satchmo, the 5 1/4" disks were more flimsier than the 3.5" ones, I remember now. I also remember seeing some PC's equipped with both the 5 1/4" and 3.5" drives.

I used to play that too! Gorillas kicks butt!

Also, a sequel was made to this game, "Gorilla 2: The Return". This one is not a flash game, it is a stand alone .exe, and freeware to. Here's a quote from the download site:

I myself already downloaded and installed Gorilla 2 on my PC, and I can say that it is a very good blast from the past, real old school fun! It's a decent improvement from the original. Oh yea, it installs and runs on Vista without no problems, though I do not know how it does with Windows 7.

I remember computers that only had the color green on the monitor.

How about orange? I had a friend with one of those monitors. It was supercool because it was a colour different than green!

Hahaha, I remember good old Windows 3.1.

My sister had a computer at one time that had 3.1 and had the small floppy disk slot and the original big floppy disk spot. Used to play old floppy disk games. Ah, those were the days.
