Probably been brought up before, but still:

When you are making a reply and select some text and press one of the BBCode-buttons it replaces your text with a start-tag, instead it should place appropriate start- and end-tags around the selected text.

I've already made a version of the bbcode editor that fixes this, but it probably wont get added until the new version of TWHL.

Can't you just integrate PHPBB3 ?

Well that's a pretty stupid suggesting, considering we already have a working, custom-coded forum solution. phpBB is crap, anyway. Produces horrible, messy code that's a lot larger than it needs to be.

Where does it produce code?

Hmm... I think you're right. It's the most unpopular platform anyway...

On the internet.

The custom-coded solution allows the forums to be fully integrated easily with the rest of the site and database. PHPBB brings a lot of baggage with it, meaning that it's very difficult to integrate into an existing database, and back to the rest of the site. It's possible, but it's a lot of effort. PHPBB is very big and bloated, and it's unnecessary for a site such as TWHL, anyway.

I agree with your point. But that still doesn't mean that all features from PHPBB are bad ideas.

I never said that. It's just a huge system that is difficult to deal with.

And there is not really any point in creating a website that uses two different types of code. You're only making things complicated for yourself.

Isn't PHP more suited for things like video sites or sites where the content changes like daily? I used to have a little video site and it was a pain updating thumbnails everyday manually. I am not much for code so yes, it was all in standard html. PHP would have helped me dramatically there.

Two different types of code? We're only talking PHP here!

and kdunivan, PHP is for any kind of sites that need server-side processing of any kind. User authentication, database interaction, dynamically generated content, and all that kind of stuff.

Let's not forget that not Penguinboy makes the community, he helps it to exist.
What I was trying to say though, is not really integrate PHPBB3( ok I said that in the most direct mode possibly, but it was just a "stupid suggestion"), but have some features borrowed from it. Example, to be able to post videos. Yes, it's a basic feature that every forum has nowadays.

Either it happens, either the site will be shut down by when it should happen :P. But if you're talking about just a couple of years, yeh, it's not gonna happen :D

The members of the site have enough trouble dealing with the youtube crap that is spammed already, there's no way I'm going to allow people to embed that rubbish in the site.

embed that rubbish
True. Although you can always put a time limit on it like the 24 hour journal cool down, if you want to be that strict about it. But its best not to go with it and I agree with you.

Not like these forums are even that busy anymore. Surely there can't be that many people that spam YT and if they do just warn them and ban if they do it again. Big whoop.

I agree with PB/Rim, we're better off without it. The forums would be filled with videos. I do however want an [audio] tag. All modern browsers (Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari and the next version of IE) support HTML5's audio tag and can play Microsoft Wave or Vorbis files (the HTML5 spec state that they have to be able to play Microsoft Wave files). It would be really simple for you to program.

Although audio and video embedding are indeed cool and nifty features, I question their relevance to the site itself. TWHL is about mapping -- audio and video embedding would be incredibly peripheral and pretty much only used in the general disc. section.

That said, I'm not strongly opposed to the ideas -- I like gadgets. But I wouldn't call it necessary. I mean, linking to an Mp3 file or a youtube video is almost as good as embedding it directly.

Can i stick my two cents in?

As a new member, these forums really catch on to me and are attractive because of the lack of features that can be spammed. I came from another modding site where there were a billion and a half things you could do outside of simple BBCode, and sure enough about 75% of the posts were completely filled with color, useless images and .mp3 embeds. Making it very hard to actually talk about why you were there in the first place.

Keep it simple.
Posted 14 years ago2010-04-23 15:58:07 UTC Post #280730
I agree with both posts above mine.

If I ever had a forum of my own, the very first day I'd disable embedding of external flash files (i.e YT videos) or audio, or <blink> tags, or whatever kind of shit can be used to spam or harm anyone's eyesight. However, there are some basic features that actually help with the use of the forum, like that in the original post here, which you should consider including in a future version.
Posted 14 years ago2010-04-23 17:12:38 UTC Post #280735
... and as Penguinboy has assured, the feature has already been implemented in TWHL4. If anything, criticise his tendency to not implement features in TWHL3 :)
Posted 14 years ago2010-05-14 17:15:58 UTC Post #280743
Correction: In this version too if it's simple enough :P

Feature requests:
  • Make [ pre ] tags render text properly and recognise tabs.
  • Have BBcode uniformly recognised across the site - i.e what works in a forum post isn't valid in the map vault, etc.
Or else.

Make [ pre ] tags render text properly and recognise tabs.
That should be easy. All he has to do is use CSS's white-space. Like this:
<code style="white-space: pre;">Code with tabs, spaces, newline characters etc.</code>

I agree with Nightlinks.
The reason I enjoy the TWHL forums is not only because of the members who post there, but because of the simplicity of the forum.
Why waste time on integrating useless crap when you can use that time to fix/add more relevant things.

I trust that Penguinboy is actively working around the clock to fix these issues at once, and finally include the long wanted Blink and Marquee tags.
