Has it been a year already? It has, and you know what that means...

Yes folks, it's time again for all our favourite game companies to gather in a big building and compare the sizes of their...profits.

Of course, the only thing that can come out of E3 is entertainment and excitement (followed by inevitable disappointment) for us consumers. So let's get excited!

Lets hear your predictions for the upcoming events. Remember that the big 3 will have their keynotes, but also EA and Ubisoft have fairly big events, too. Of course, you can also talk about other companies, but let's keep the wild Valve speculation to a minimum, shall we?

Personally I'd like to see more from Nintendo about Golden Sun 3, which was announced last year, but has had ZERO information released since. We'll probably get some information on the new Zelda game, too. Sony and Microsoft will be busy talking about their new motion control stuff, but might find the time to announce some new games, too.

So; Speculate away! Whoever guesses the most correct outrageous claims gets a prize of incalculable value!

Portal 2 is already out there, we know about it, I'm more looking at a new reveal.
If ValvE knows what's good for them, they'll pull out another Orange Box.
Episode 3, Portal 2, Ricochet: Source (lol jk) but something multiplayer and new...

The Microsoft keynote starts in 3 hours. Exciting! Of course, I don't expect much else besides Natal, Natal, and more Natal. Oh, I mean "Kinect".

EDIT: Nobody interested in E3 this year? I'm not surprised, it's been pretty fucking terrible so far.

Microsoft's keynote was officially the worst I've ever seen - full of Natal bullshit. It was even more hilariously terrible than the Wii Music affair Nintendo tried to pull off at a previous keynote.

EA and Ubisoft had similarly mediocre keynotes.

I guess the biggest 'news' so far is the new 360 redesign. Some people like it, some hate it. Personally, I think it's about the same. A hardware redesign might be just what MS needs to stop the RROD's.

Nintendo's keynote starts in two hours - hopefully they're a bit better this year (no way it can be as crap as Microsoft's this year). Probably the one I'm looking forward to the most - I want to see more news on the 3DS.

After Nintendo is Sony. Interesting to see how they go too, although the Move doesn't impress me much (more than Natal, though!).

I hear people say that the surprise has been cancelled (at least for this E3 event).

Also:
Open "source 2007 shared materials"

Then go to:
Materials -> models

There are three new folders named: "boxrocket_Chell_head" "ihvtest" and "ihvtree".

They contain some very weird textures:

They're definitely up to something. I bet they've already completed Portal 2 and they're just doing all this to mess with us.

Nintendo's keynote just ended. Definitely makes up for Microsoft's failure yesterday - tons of new games, more info on Golden Sun, new Zelda announced, 3DS reveal, with an impressive looking Kid Icarus game for it. Even a new Goldeneye game for Wii, which looks pretty cool too. I highly doubt that Sony can beat that.

Anyone going to E3?

I live in Long Beach, so I am only a 30-minute train ride away from E3 (LA Convention Center).

I don't have a pass, so I can't get inside. But I am planning to go on Thursday to scout around outside, when I don't have to work in the morning.

I'll post some pictures if I spot anything interesting.

PS3 will now have game.
Anyway, a lot of that Portal footage looks VERY impressive for Source. Could it be a new engine? Or maybe it's just yet another enhancement of Source for a new game.

It's not a new engine. It's just Valve's movie creation tool. Consider the TF2/L4D videos, it's the same as that.

The video was all mostly realtime. Check my Portal 2 videos thread. it looks like Source uses completely dynamic lighting in Portal 2, or at least dynamic sky light. You can see shadows cast by leaves and such move around in parts of the videos.

and the new paints, that was kick ass for source.

That's all looks like an upgraded version of the projected lighting the flashlight uses in Ep3/L4D/L4D2. It's nothing new for Source, except obviously being optimised enough for widescale use.

The engine is definitely nicer, but the teaser was clearly not realtime. It's rendered through their filmmaker with many effects you probably won't see in-game. Crepuscular rays, for one. They've been doing these since TF2.

Oops. It was. ;(
Crepuscular rays?
'God' rays. This sort of thing. You can see them in use in the L4D intro videos, too, along with a heap of supersampling and depth of field effects.

Point is, that teaser was the same sort of movie magic Valve has used many times before. Portal 2 is looking great, regardless.
Nintendo totally stole the show for me, with their keynote. It was the only conference that was all about the games, and had an impressive line-up to show. They also win points because they didn't have a dorky nerd on-stage dancing to a crappy motion peripheral.

Yeah, but the model is static, and faked through layers. The kind used in their videos is a fully dynamic (deforming/shadowing) effect, definitely not a model.

Far Cry 2 has had complete dynamic lighting for the past few years.

It is nice, I have to admit. And I am glad that it's finally coming to the Source engine (I hope).

Shadow of Chernobyl had fully dynamic lighting back in 2007.
FEAR had it in 2005.
Even Doom 3 had it way back in 2004 :P

Ok, so maybe the rays in the video were a tell-tale sign. The new lighting enhancements threw me off.

I've seen them too, twice in 720p. There are no dynamic rays, no DOF, and you can bet no console is going to be using such a scale of supersampling at a playable rate. This isn't a bad thing as most console games don't have those anyway.

This is just no different than what Valve have done with their other game videos, that's all.

Didn't see that coming. Especially since last I checked, Gabe saw porting Valve games to PS3 as a waste of time.

Also, I look forward to dynamic lighting in source. I wonder if we'll be able to block texlights with decals and props, or maybe shoot lights out now...
