I am trying to decide whether I should get a GTX 460 or GTX 470 for my next rig.

GTX 470 is clearly faster. It costs US$50 more than the 460, and it's also hotter and possibly noisier than the 460. In addition, it is the "first generation" of the DirectX 11 cards from Nvidia.

GTX 460, on the other hand, is newer and arguably has a better design. It is more power efficient, and requires less cooling (therefore quieter).

What do you think?

I wonder if since the 240s are so cheap now that it would worth it to get two of those suckers.

Just wondering because I'm going to be building a rig soon too, and haven't been keeping up with gfx cards lately.

I still don't believe two 240's in SLI is going to outperform a GTX 460.

Besides, it doesn't matter how many 200 cards you have, they still can't run DirectX 11 games.

Get GTX460. It isn't a lot slower than 470, but it's cooler and more power efficient(hey, everyone wants green parts these days right?).
It actually runs modern games very well(ex: Metro2033 runs on very high details at fullHD res pretty smooth).

I had metro2033 on xbox, I really liked it and it has astonishing graphics even for the xbox, but I feel kinda upset that I didn't get the whole experience since the xbox graphic settings for it are limited to like low - medium, I'd like to play it again on PC when I get my proper new awesome rig :).

The 470 is about 25% better than the 460. Just do the math - if the 460 costs more than $200, paying $50 on top of that price for a 470 will gain you a 25% performance increase for less than 25% of the cost.

Well, percentage increase in performance doesn't always translate into dollars.

Some hardcore gamers would pay three times the price for a cutting edge hardware that has 10% performance increase.

I am not saying that I would do that, but bragging right is irrational.

I think if I had your kind of income I wouldn't have to worry about such trivial matters, that's what I think.

well, the main focus is around Directx11 supported cards, if he wanted a more expensive, faster card, I'm sure that option is available, but most cards can't work with directx11 but the fermi 100 series cards like the 460,70,and 80.

I recall him mentioning something about "cooling" and "noise" but that's probably just my imagination.

That does seem like something you'd make up. I'm fine sticking with this explanation.

I'd go with the 470. Substantially higher frame rate for only $50 extra. Screw the noise crap.
