Okay, I want to get compo 29 rolled out sooner rather than later. Bring your compo ideas into this thread, and we'll get some voting going.

Some things about this compo:
  • Goldsource and Source
  • Engines will be judged separately
  • Allocated time will be fairly short (2-4 weeks)
For this compo, I would like to see a focus on architecture, lighting and ambience, rather than gameplay, plot or size of entries. But this is just my opinion, so feel free to vote for other ideas.

If you want, you may take ideas from the previous ideas thread.

Once there's a top 5 or 6 ideas, I will put them up in a poll to decide the final compo theme.

Perhaps we should do something from a base? Like take a bland hallway and detail it, light it, add ambiance, retexture it, etc. We haven't done that since well before I joined. Or maybe map an evil lair?

Even I haven't had a chance to do a "From Base" competition! We've only had one in our history.

I nominate map from a base.

And don't have me make the base so I get disqualified by default >;U

What do I mean? We're given the top of the map and the base of the map. We're completing the Z axis :).

If you like map from base, what kind of base would you want? A full circular deathmatch layout, a linear singleplayer layout, or something small that is neither here nor there, like the one in the 'Destructification!' competition?

What? Why the hell would you nominate another map from layout comp? Have you not had enough of those already or are you just completely out of proper ideas?

I'm going to nominate my own one:

Map a scene from a movie / game, the one that represents this scene the most and does the best ambient, brush and entity work wins! Thats what Penguin wanted right?

Or how about I throw in another batch of ideas:

1. Map any location around the world. (rated on resemblance to the place and the difficulty of creating it)
2. Invent your own vehicle and build it in hammer. (this could be anything ranging from a car to a helicopter to a ship or even a space ship, most creative idea wins).
3. A scripted sequence / sentence contest. I believe one of these already happened before, but it would be better than another map from layout compo.

I'd totally be down for an encore of the original "Texture it, Light it, Play it" competition with the limit of only using vanilla resources.

As long as it's not another map a dream, then I don't care. I didn't like the idea of that competition, and even more so when I actually came up with a good idea for it when there was about 3 days left :|

Also, map from a base with custom content pweeze? There's enough resources for people to use on the net where it wouldn't be a problem. Making your own content takes time anyway.

I'm still waiting for a competition that syncs at least a bit with my free time. Mine starts in mid November :P

I like map from a base. Alternatively, I also like Skals's suggestion, although it has obvious limitations in terms of judging:

I even know what I'd map, but how would the judges know it's accurate?

Ok, that's assuming they're not rich nor have plenty of time to travel around the world.

Wow I like the way you guys keep the ball rolling here. Though a few weeks isn't enough time to get an entry out of me. I have full time college for architecture and I work 25 hours a week on top of that. But I would love a month or longer competition again. I have a really great idea that has been done by some but i've been wanting to have a take on it and it would be great competition.

Remake black mesa research facility. This means the entrance/ base area after the intro train ride. The train ride could also be remade if so desired.

If we were to do another map from base I think a deathmatch style theme is the best because its good opportunity to get some more good deathmatch maps out there, and they can always be converted to single player maps as tetsuo did with competition 27.

I think there's too many good ideas out there to redo an idea though especially twice though map from base is very broad in many senses.

I'll post other ideas as they come.

I like the idea of "focusing on architecture". I would do so much more we just need a great theme. "map a dream" was so entirely broad that I had to do so many maps to get my ideas across. Map something like a temple or other type of architecture is more ideal. How about we have an "architecture" competition. Design a piece of architecture with certain aspects/ limitations like for example; use hexagons as your main component as was done by Kasperg in hexagerate.

Instead we should do triangles!!!

I remember that map...wasn't I doing something with it a while ago? I forget.

Anyway, I'd love to do a Map from Layout or a Map from Base competition. I know I wanted the Map a Dream but my idea kinda didn't work out and I couldn't get any of the custom content I needed.

Briefing: The following map is one of the oldest and most well known maps in Half Life mapping history. However, it suffers from serious beginner mapping problems (ex. LEAK LEAK LEAK). In addition, there is a serious oversight in gameplay design (all the weapons/items in one room, all the enemies in the other room). ON TOP OF THAT the architecture is in serious need of a renovation. Your job is to re-map and improve this map so that it doesn't go down in HL history as an all-time tragedy:
Every single level author has started off with a piece of crap like WTACTTO; the difference is that they haven't decided to thrust it upon the rest of the world. Here's a hint for future mappers: try to get your little creation looking and playing better than the goddamn Worldcraft tutorial map before you embarass yourself with its release.

There is NO forum dedicated to mapping, there is a maps and MODS forum however, but that nulls your point.

And the goldsource and source engine discussions are for coding, mapping, mod creation, and everything in between.
