Map a theme park.
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-02 17:56:56 UTC Post #286016
theme park's been done too (Redemption)

There's always a good idea, but it's very likely been done before
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-02 17:59:04 UTC Post #286017
I played it. But seeing the skills of some, it can be done a million times better.

Also, map a functional factory. Why not? :P

Some really good ideas going down there. I haven't entered a competition yet, I considered the dream one but it would have taken time out of other projects and I don't think I would have been very good at it, though I did have a good idea towards the end.

Map from a base, map a theme park, map a working factory all sounds great to me :D

Nobody has suggested this (that I'm aware of) how about map a rat-map of your immediate surroundings - your computer room, your bedroom or wherever you map. 1mm = 1 hammer unit so you would be running inbetween 10ft cups of tea and climbing giant [everyday object]s. Ladders and low gravity help you get around. On such a large scale you can fit in so much detail that when you stand back things look real. It's a real mapping challenge for VM'ing solids and getting the most detail that YOU can, not so much about what hammer can do.

I'm really liking the idea of this now, shame it's probably not going to get picked!

how about map a rat-map of your immediate surroundings
This has been done to death I'm afraid. Not to mention the scale is hard to work with. Though good effort
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-03 05:27:26 UTC Post #286039
Map a rats map is a great idea. Not of your immediate surroundings and not to a certain scale. You guys are being too specific. And i've already done a rats of my room so such specifications wouldn't allow me to enter. Post nuclear map is pretty cool but probably more ideal for source. I agree that broad ideas are great for more creativity but I think we need an idea that is neither too broad nore too specific. Last competition idea was a little too broad though a great idea it just required lots of mapping. Thats the only reason a little more specific idea would be ok for this competition. Lets come up with "new" fresh ideas though guys.

Heres a few new ideas from me along with my favortite.

-Map triangular architecture, arch. with triangles as its main influence/component.

-Map your house. Change it up if you'd like. Include pictures.

-Map a huge deathmatch map where its size is a big aspect. Think of carbaseus as an example.

-Make a deathmatch map that takes place in the sky. Think floating islands, canons, etc.

-Make a deathmatch map/sp map that takes place under the ocean. Could be enclosed in glass architecture just as long as it is under the sea.

-Map a grave yard.

-Mars. Your take on what habitation/architecture/living spaces, society on mars might look like.

-Music. Make a map where each seperate area is influenced by different music or an entire map inspired by one song. The music could or could not be played in the map but probably should. Think of maps like huhhh and whaaa for counterstrike.

-Remake black mesa research facility. Intro/train ride could also be done. Intro lab would be done.

How about mapping a space themed-map? No starwars inspiration on this one.
For example, map a space station(or possibly a human settlement) on Gliese 581g trying to recreate the conditions present there?

I even wrote an article about it on my blog :).

If it's Mars, I'm SO going to use those DOOM textures I converted. :P

Do you have the doom skybox too?
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-04 10:47:40 UTC Post #286093
so are u going to convert textures from another game to HL1?
then i will copy the whole brushwork from Red Faction. Just kidding =D

lets bring some rules: i think it would be a little unfair to compare half life map with valve's (crappy) textures to a map with sexy and nifty Unreal Tournament textures yea ofcourse u can "borrow" a little thing from another game (sprite, button voice) but not the whole texture package

and my vote goes to "map that takes place under the ocean"
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-04 13:26:02 UTC Post #286097
Thats stupid to use hl1's textures. There crappy and out dated as you just admitted. Anyone can get textures from another game, just put in the extra effort. Im soooo sick of seeing the original textures in new maps.
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-04 14:04:45 UTC Post #286098
There are wayyyy to many "under the sea" mods, challenger deep, subhumanity, unknown menace and already that's alot

how about a "most creative map in existence"? Anybody remember alternative origin? if not, search it on twhl

At first I pictured a dozen glass dome-and-tube maps but I like the idea more now too.

Well yeah most would probably take that approach.

Myself included :P

Ditto on that. How about map a period of time?
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-04 19:35:00 UTC Post #286121
How exactly? Time is an abstract concept.

Not yet, but I plan on doing it. :crowbar:

I mean it as relatively as possible, ie: map a historical point for example, you map some ancient civilization or for a challenge try to capture the feel of a particular century. We have no photographs of these things so there's TONS of room for play and imagination.

Idk it was just an idea.
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-04 21:51:29 UTC Post #286128
So what you're saying is that any of these would make it:
  • Map 237 B.C Greece
  • Map 476 A.D France
  • Map Renaissance Venice
  • Map Victorian-era London
  • Map 1937 New York
I kinda imagined that differently.
Posted 14 years ago2010-10-05 03:59:44 UTC Post #286148
^ All of those sound good. Bring on the historical.

1937 NY would be interesting.

mafia hgrunts, suited scientists, drunk scientists. Possibilities are endless. :crowbar:
