Hey guys, just need a quick diagnosis and recommendation.

So I have a feeling my graphics card is going to die very very soon. Loads of artifacts in games, literally rendering them unplayable, and constantly freezes, and now it's starting to happen in my web browser too. I have had an artifact issue with the card for about a year now, it displays green dots pixels that should be dark, and they ghost without removal, unless the window is minimized, but today it has taken it huge leap.

I'm not very good with computers despite how much I use them. So please excuse my ignorance.

Can I confirm this is my GPU?

What's a good cheap card? I'd like it to be better than this one (8800GTS 640mb)I know I have no other option really than to buy a new card.

Tell me if you need any more technical information, but this should(oh god I thought it was gonna crash just then)help.

Actually, I don't care how expensive it is, I just need to be compatible with my current rig, and be just as good or better than my last card.

The system I'm using at the moment often has graphics card-related crashes, but after testing the card in another system, and another card in this one I discovered that the mobo's graphics card slot was damaged, not the card itself.
I recommend you perform these tests before replacing the card.

That said, it is almost certainly your GPU.

Have you cleaned the card from dust and updated the drivers lately? It might help. I mean, if it functions normal for most of the time then it realy isn't broken, YET, and you might be able to prevent it

I'll try right now, I've tried before, and it never fixed the green dots though.

I took it out, blew the dust out thoroughly, now it BSOD's everytime before the windows initial loading screen finishes.

I probably spat into it.

Huntey, I doubt it could be the slot, you should have seen some of the artifacts I was getting, as far as the uniform ones go some buttons in games had perfectly sized star over them, loading bars were replaced with smiley faces taken from the games GUI, pictures where stretched and tiled all over the screen plus a host of your regular triangles, black shit, fuzzies and crap.

I have a GeForse 9600GT but the driver says it's a 9400GT (?!?!) I now how bad the dust rely be so I clean it some times. The las time I did that it broke so I had to swich to the one in the mother board and that demoved my 3GB ram to 2.75GB ram...Got new drivers, a DVI cable and that's it!

u have 2 cores and there would not be a difference beetwen 512 and 1024 GPU u should get at least 3x cores also remember that the power supply is important

Pro Tip, krakz: blowing on computer parts is not how you clean them.

Use a vacuum to remove dust and then use a can of compressed air to get to the more hard to reach places.

I had issues like that when one of my RAM sticks was corrupt. I also thought it was my graphics card. Say, you're not also having HDD issues? Like files corrupting randomly every once in a while?

Is your browser perhaps a Firefox 4 beta version, Safari 5, Chrome 7 or Internet Explorer 9? They use hardware acceleration for 2D rendering. Try turning it off and see if your browser behaves any better.

Not sure how you could easily test either without replacing either, though.

Some GPUs have a plastic casing around the cooler(or whatever the word is for it in english), and the fan blows into the cooler. If this is the case, vacuuming the fan will not do. You will have to either dismount the plastic casing and clean the inside, or do what I do, if you've got access to an aircompressor, blow carefully with not too much pressure into the cooler, it'll nlow out all of the dust, saving a lot of energy wasted on dismounting and reassembling.
